(AP) ? NFL referees are ready to go unnoticed again, just as they prefer.

The refs approved a new eight-year contract with the league by a 112-5 vote Saturday, officially ending a lockout that led to three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew the attention of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.

After a few hours of final preparations with league officials, the next stop for the referees will be the airport. Most will be heading straight to their Sunday game sites.

"It was pretty much 'Come on in and vote,'" said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. "We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games."

They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place. Before long, they expect to go back to being mostly anonymous and sometimes hated. They're OK with both.

"The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,'" Green said. "That's how we like to work."

The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.

"We are obviously pleased to hear it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.

The deal came quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night. Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.

The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

"I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned," Green said. "If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well."

Seoul food bleg

I am from Busan. I think the very traditional style of dining may be a bit hard for you since it requires sitting on floor rather than on chair. If I were taking American friends out, I would bring them to restaurants in a mall. I recommend this place in Busan (http://english.shinsegae.com/english/dept/dept_store.asp?STORE_CD=16). There are restaurants on the 9th floor, on the 4th floor, and in the basement (prices increase with altitude). It is very easy to get there using public transportation.

If you want exotic experience, I recommend that you visit markets. Two interesting markets are (http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_1_1_1.jsp?cid=264168) and (http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SH/whereToShop/whereToShop.jsp?action=about&cid=997641). These are accessible by public transportation as well.

Unlike Seoul, Busan has a simple subway network so I do not expect you to encounter difficulties with it. Buses are a different story (some bus drivers will give you a roller coaster ride). People may get intimidated if you ask them questions in English (not all of them speak well enough to give directions etc), but they will generally try their best to assist you (expect lots of body movements).

Mayor proposes renaming Fremont street for J.P. Patches

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn has proposed legislation that would rename a Fremont street in honor of J.P. Patches.

Chris Wedes, aka JP Patches, passed away in July after a long illness.

The legislation would rename North 34th St. between Fremont Ave. N. and Troll Ave. N. as "J.P. Patches Place."

In announcing the proposed street change, McGinn called J.P.? Patches "one of our most treasured and enduring icons."

The J.P. Patches show ran from 1958 to 1981 - the longest running local children's show in the country. When the show ended in 1981, Wedes continued on with the J.P. character, appearing at fairs, festivals and private parties.

Said McGinn, "J.P. Patches made such an impact on our community that when he passed away earlier this year, many Seattleites felt that they had lost a member of the family."

The street that would be renamed is where the J.P. Patches and Gertrude statue is located.

"Thanks for all the joy, friendship, and laughs you?ve given us, JP.? We will never forget you," said McGinn.

Moving Right Along in Apologia Biology - Spell Out Loud

Over the years I have felt most comfortable teaching younger kiddos. Most of my co-op classes have been geared toward toddlers and preschoolers. This year I get to mix it up a bit and teach my oldest daughter and her friend high school biology. I was nervous at first, but I am enjoying it! I feel so smart reading words like ?prokaryotes? and ?eukaryotes?. ;)

We are using Apologia Biology for high school science this year. I read the chapters just like my students. Some things come back to me once I?ve read them, but other terms/concepts have been new. It?s been wonderful challenging myself and learning at the same time. Honestly, I don?t feel like I?m really teaching but rather facilitating. The girls were familiar with the format after taking General Science, so they know to read, answer the On Your Own, and do the study guide. I handle reviewing materials and making sure they understand what was read that week.

The three of us are enjoying our lab time. A friend let us borrow a microscope and the past couple of weeks we have been observing various micro-organisms in pond water (you would not believe how bad the water smells!?lol!)

The girls have learned the parts of a microscope and how to prepare their own slides. Using the microscope has been fascinating! I have found the labs using the microscope a valuable learning experience. The girls were excited to go beyond just the assignment and look for other things to observe under the microscope. So now I have added obtaining a high-quality microscope onto my must-haves for science wish-list! I do have 6 other kids who will use it too ;)

Reading the product descriptions of microscopes can seem like Greek. Marci from The Homeschool Scientist gives a great over-view on what to look for when choosing a microscope. ?I have a high-quality LED microscope on my wish-list (cough, cough: this one or this one would do ;) )

Anyway, I just want to encourage you that it is possible to teach your high-schooler biology! :) I made a list of some of my go-to sites that have figured it all out for me. I check there each week before teaching. :) ? Apologia Biology Resources

In addition, Connie from The Daisyhead is blogging about her biology co-op experience this year. Be sure to follow along and link up to her weekly High School link-up.

Technology designed for use by astronauts works to save trapped miners

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? A technology designed for use by astronauts in the hazardous environment of space has found a lifesaving use in another dangerous occupation, but this time on Earth, or rather under it: coal mining.

Paragon Space Development Corp. of Tucson, Ariz., is providing the air revitalization system it matured under a NASA Space Act Agreement to Mine Shield LLC of Lancaster, Ky., for use in its underground miner refuge chambers. These air-tight metal chambers are used by miners as lifesaving havens when trapped underground, providing air, water and food until rescued.

"This is a great example of NASA investment fostering entrepreneurial activity in other markets," said Phil McAlister, director of NASA's Commercial Spaceflight Development in Washington, D.C. "The technology was developed as part of an effort to stimulate the private sector to develop commercial space transportation concepts and enable capabilities for future commercial support of human spaceflight with U.S. taxpayer dollars and Paragon's private investment. The company then found another market for it, leading to the development of a new commercial product and service, which will help save the lives of American miners."

In 2010, NASA began to invest in the commercial sector's capability to support transport of crew to and from low Earth orbit. During this initiative through a Space Act Agreement, NASA invested approximately $1.5 million of American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 economic stimulus funds in Paragon to mature its air purifying system.

Astronaut survival in space depends on a continuous source of breathable air. Paragon improved its design, manufactured and tested an engineering development unit that controls carbon dioxide, humidity, trace contaminants, airborne particulates, air circulation and cooling. Key elements of this technology could play an important role in the life support systems for future deep space exploration missions.

"Our air revitalization system recycles the air by using a series of scrubbers, filters and catalysts that purify the air over and over again," said Taber MacCallum, chief executive officer of Paragon. "The fact that this system, which was developed for human space exploration, has other important applications here on Earth shows how NASA and space exploration energizes American innovation."

Paragon was approached by the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration to see if the NASA-developed technology could be used to improve the safety and effectiveness of mine refuge chambers.

US extreme skier Plake among avalanche survivors

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? Renowned American extreme skier Glen Plake, one of the survivors of the weekend Himalayan avalanche that killed at least eight people, said Wednesday he feels lucky to be alive but heartbroken that he could not save two friends who remain missing.

Plake is a champion hot-dog skier who has appeared in many extreme-skiing documentaries, including 1988's "The Blizzard of AAHHH's," and also is well known for the tall mohawk he wears on the slopes. He had planned to ski down Mount Manalsu, the world's eighth-highest mountain, after reaching the summit.

"I was awake in my tent reading my Bible. ... The tent began to shake. We thought it was the wind but in fact it was an avalanche," Plake told reporters at the Katmandu airport after returning from the mountain in a helicopter. "It was like an earthquake; it was like a tsunami."

Though he said he is "probably the luckiest person in the world," he was unable to find his friends and climbing companions, Remy George Lecluse and Gregory Ugo Costa, both of France.

"You are doing everything you can do because your friends' lives depend on your next action," he said. "Unfortunately everything I did proved to produce nothing. At that point, I had to think about my own life and start preparing."

Lecluse and Costa are among three people still missing from the avalanche, which swept the tents at camp 2 at an elevation of 7,000 meters (22,960 feet) before dawn Sunday.

Nepalese mountaineering officials say eight bodies have been recovered: Fabrice Priez, Philippe Lucien Bos, Catherine Marie Andree Richard and Ludovic Paul Nicolas Challeat of France; German Christian Mittermeyer; Italian Alberto Magliano; Spaniard Marti Roirg Gasull; and Nepali Dawa Dorji.

Many of the survivors have returned to Katmandu, the Nepalese capital, and have abandoned their plans to climb the mountain this season.

Sunday's avalanche came at the start of Nepal's autumn climbing season, when the end of the monsoon rains makes weather in the high Himalayas unpredictable. Spring is a more popular mountaineering season, when hundreds of climbers crowd the peaks.

Mount Manaslu, which is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high, has attracted more climbers recently because it is considered one of the easier peaks to climb among the world's tallest mountains. Avalanches are not very frequent there, but in 1972 one struck a team of climbers and killed six Koreans and 10 Nepali guides.

Mugabe says Gaddafi's death as tragic as U.S. envoy's

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said on Wednesday the death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was as tragic as that of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, as he delivered a scathing critique of U.S., U.N. and NATO actions.

Speaking firmly, if occasionally stumbling over words, the 88-year-old president accused the United States of "rushing to suck oil from Iraq" when it invaded the country in 2003 on the erroneous grounds that it possessed weapons of mass destruction.

He said the U.N. Security Council had allowed itself to be "abused" last year by authorizing "all necessary measures" - diplomatic code for military intervention - to protect civilians in Libya in a NATO operation that eventually toppled Gaddafi's government and led to his death at the hands of rebels.

Speaking with deliberate irony, Mugabe opened an address to the U.N. General Assembly by praising as "most glowing and most moving" a speech by U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday in which he rued Stevens' death.

Stevens and three other Americans were killed during what Washington has called a "terrorist" attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi on September 11. The assault forced the evacuation of U.S. personnel from the eastern city that was the hub for the Libyan rebel movement.

"I am sure we were all moved, we all agree, that it was a tragic death indeed and we condemn it," said Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980 and is among Africa's longest-serving leaders.

"As we in spirit join the United States in condemning that death, shall the United States also join us in condemning that barbaric death of the head of state of Libya - Gaddafi? It was a loss, a great loss, to Africa, a tragic loss to Africa."

'A HUNT, A BRUTAL HUNT'

The Zimbabwean accused the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the 28-member Western security alliance whose air strikes helped Libyan rebels defeat Gaddafi's forces, of acting under false pretenses.

"The mission was strictly to protect civilians, but it turned out that there was a hunt, a brutal hunt, of Gaddafi and his family," Mugabe said. "In a very dishonest manner we saw ... Chapter 7 being used now as a weapon to rout a whole family."

Chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter allows the U.N. Security Council to authorize actions ranging from diplomatic and economic sanctions to military intervention.

"Bombs were ... thrown about in a callous manner and quite a good many civilians died. Was that the protection that they had sought under Chapter 7 of the Charter?

"So the death of Gaddafi must be seen in the same tragic manner as the death of Chris Stevens. We condemn both of them."

Mugabe, a long-standing critic of the West, is himself widely criticized for turning what was once one of Africa's strongest economies into a basket case and has been accused of hanging on to power through vote-rigging.

Other speakers at the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday - notably Bolivia's leftist president, Evo Morales, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - also criticized the United States for what they see as economic and political bullying.

A U.S. official had no immediate comment on Mugabe's remarks.

The Zimbabwean leader appeared to be in reasonable health despite questions about his wellbeing sparked by Zimbabwean media reports that he has traveled to Singapore eight times in the past year to seek medical attention.

He walked in an almost jaunty manner to and from the lectern in the General Assembly hall, where he read his speech from a written text.

(AP) ? The federal probation violation investigation targeting the man behind the anti-Muslim video inflaming the Middle East is proceeding slowly and privately, reflecting the explosiveness of the case.

Federal officials have said nothing publicly about the case, and neither has Nakoula Basseley Nakoula's attorney. Nakoula has put his home up for sale and gone into hiding since violence erupted over the 14-minute YouTube trailer for "Innocence of Muslims," a crudely made film that portrays the Muhammad as a religious fraud, womanizer and pedophile.

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and dozens have died in violent protests linked to the movie. A Pakistani cabinet minister on Monday offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills Nakoula.

Meantime, First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film even while condemning its content. President Barack Obama echoed those sentiments Tuesday in a speech at the United Nations.

"We understand why people take offense to this video because millions of our citizens are among them. I know there are some who ask, 'Why don't we just ban such a video?'" he said. "The answer is enshrined in our laws. Our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech."

Against that backdrop, federal officials are looking into whether Nakoula, 55, violated probation for a 2010 check fraud conviction by uploading the trailer to YouTube. Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

If he's found in violation, he could be returned to prison. If not, he'll remain free. Either way, federal officials will face criticism, either from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled or from those who believe he should have been punished for inciting violence with the video.

"This case breaks the mold," said Mark Werksman, a defense attorney in Los Angeles and a former federal prosecutor. "If the video hadn't gone viral, and caused the Arabic world to blow up, who would care if this guy is using YouTube? It's all about politics with this guy."

Because of the international complexity, probation officials handling the case are taking plenty of time to make a decision and likely are getting input from throughout the federal government, said Lawrence Rosenthal, a professor at Chapman University's School of Law in Orange.

"My best guess is decisions about this case are going to be made at very high levels," Rosenthal said, surmising federal prosecutors, Justice Department headquarters and even the State Department may be weighing in.

Steven Seiden, a defense attorney representing Nakoula in the probation matter, did not reply to questions by email Tuesday and has not replied to several written requests for an interview with him or his client. The U.S. attorney's office declined to comment.

In most federal cases, a probation officer who decides someone has committed a serious violation submits a confidential report to the sentencing judge, who then can pursue a probation revocation hearing ? a mini-trial of sorts ? where probation officials must prove the violation.

If the judge finds the individual in violation, the court can return the defendant to probation, send him to prison or impose additional terms of probation without prison time.

Normal cases can move very quickly ? sometimes taking days ? once a probation officer has prepared a report, Werksman said. In this instance, however, the political and diplomatic ramifications likely have officials scrutinizing every step.

Probation officials first must be able to prove there was a violation, and that could mean a lengthy investigation into whether Nakoula or someone else posted the video on YouTube, said Heidi Rummel, a former federal prosecutor and criminal law professor at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law.

In addition, the terms of Nakoula's supervised release indicate he was allowed to use computers with prior approval from his probation officer. It's possible he received approval to post the trailer for "Innocence of Muslims."

"Usually the probation officer will be most interested in preventing him from engaging in any kind of activity related to the original crime, so another factor would be what kind of permission did the probation officer give him?" she said. "Why would (the film) be of concern in a bank fraud case? That's a whole nother wrinkle."

If federal probation officials ? or those above them ? decide not to proceed against Nakoula, the public likely will never know what went into the decision or who was involved without a court proceeding, Rosenthal said.

If the case does go before a judge, Nakoula could argue he was singled out on a probation technicality for exercising his right to free speech, Rosenthal said.

Either way, the outcome to the investigation could take a long time and isn't as straightforward as it may seem, said Rummel, the former prosecutor.

The issues are unusual for the probation revocation context and the allegations may be difficult to prove," she said.

"It's not like they have a couple dirty drug tests and two weeks later they're in court."

Royal Collection buys Warhol portraits of queen

(AP) ? Britain's Royal Collection Trust is going Pop Art with the purchase of four famous Andy Warhol portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.

The colorful screenprints are based on a formal photograph of the queen wearing a tiara and necklace that was used during her Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977.

They will form part of the Portraits of a Monarch exhibit starting in November at Windsor Castle.

The purchase brings Warhol's distinctive style to a collection of portraits of British rulers that dates back to the 15th Century.

Officials declined Monday to specify how much was paid for the portraits.

The exhibit will be open to people who visit Windsor Castle, which is roughly 20 miles west of London. It will run until June 2013.

Beer flows as Germany kicks off Oktoberfest

BERLIN (AP) ? The mayor of Munich has tapped the first keg of beer to kick off the 179th traditional German folk festival Oktoberfest.

With only two blows of his hammer and a cry of "O'zapft is" ? "It's Tapped" ? Mayor Christian Ude inserted the first tap into the first keg as the festival opened Saturday.

More than six million guests from around the world are expected to descend on the beer tents of Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest through October 7.

Last year's visitors consumed almost 8 million 2-pint (1-liter) mugs of beer. This year a mug, called "Mass" in German, sells at up to ?9.50 ($12.30).

German authorities keep security tight around the fairgrounds which accommodate hundreds of thousands of people at a time, although, they say, no concrete threat exists.

In Japan, anti-China protest over islands row

TOKYO ?

Hundreds of Japanese have marched through downtown Tokyo in a loud but tightly controlled protest against China's claim to disputed islands in the East China Sea.

The protest Saturday, organized by the nationalist group "Ganbare Nippon," or "Go for It, Japan," followed scores of sometimes violent anti-Japanese demonstrations in China in recent weeks.

Though hundreds of Japanese protesters gathered in a downtown park and then marched through the glitzy Roppongi district, authorities only allowed small groups of five people each to visit the sidewalk opposite the Chinese Embassy.

"Come on out of there!" some of the protesters screamed at the well-guarded embassy building, which was closed. Dozens of police kept order, moving the groups away from the embassy after only a few minutes.

Puyallup Fair changing name to become Washington State Fair in 2013

The Puyallup Fair has announced that it is in the process of changing its name to officially be called the Washington State Fair, effective when the trademark paperwork is completed in 2013. The fair, which first started in 1900, is the largest in the state, and has been a September tradition for several generations.

Many people already consider the Puyallup Fair to be the unofficial state fair in Washington. It has been the largest fair in the state for over half a century, officials said. The 4-H State Fair and the Washington State FFA Exhibition house their annual state competition at the Puyallup Fair, a hallmark of most state fairs in the nation. In the case of 4-H, students compete at the county fair level, with winners moving on to the state finals in Puyallup.

"The board of directors did their due diligence before moving forward," said Kent Hojem, CEO. "They weighed the pros and cons, and conducted market research to see what both locals and newcomers to the state felt about the name options. Overwhelmingly, their positive support of the name change impacted our decision to take the next steps in a name change."

While the name may change, the Washington State Fair will continue to offer the traditional favorites that have made it a family favorite since 1900. The foundation of the fair when it first started focused on animals, agriculture and education, and those elements remain strong features in the current fair.

The name change also streamlines the process of acquiring grandstand entertainment and national sponsors, fair officials said. Until now, it was necessary to explain the magnitude of size and attendance, explaining that Washington does not have a state fair. Now the focus can be placed on the benefits of the Washington State Fair, they said.

Sex.com says 'pins' banned from Pinterest

1 hr.

If you visit Sex.com, and we're not recommending you do, you'll notice the site looks like a Pinterest for porn. That seems to be its aim since the porn site?relaunched last spring. Users can "add any picture or video from the Web" to their personal, virtual pinboard. Now the site says its pins have been banned from being shared?on Pinterest, one of the fastest growing social networks around.

It's not that Pinterest doesn't have artsy, sensual photos on the site. It does. But type in the word "sex" in Pinterest's search box, and you get this response:?

Pinterest does not allow nudity. Pinning or repinning photographs displaying breasts, buttocks or genitalia may result in the termination of your Pinterest account.

Furthermore, the site says on one of its Help pages:

Our no-nudity policy applies to photographic images. It does not apply to illustrations, paintings, sculptures, etc. We do not allow nude photographic?images that contain exposed nipples, genitalia, and/or fully exposed buttocks.

But Sex.com is yowling over what it says is a ban from Pinterest that just happened "a few days ago."

On its blog, Sex.com says that over the summer, its Web team noticed Sex.com users were pinning "adult content" on Pinterest, and was "excited to see some users crossover," between the two sites, but that a "few days ago our crossover was shudown by Pinterest. They have banned Sex.com, declaring our site to be spam."

Sex.com says it wants answers and can't get them from Pinterest.?

Pinterest spokesman Barry Schnitt told NBC News Thursday in an email that Pinterest "doesn't?allow nudity or pornography. Never has. In fact, I don't know any social site that does. I'm not sure what the confusion is about here,?but we're proud of our position on the issue and of our efforts to keep the site clean. Seems most of the commenters here agree."

NHL cancels September slate of preseason games

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL canceled its entire September preseason game schedule on Wednesday, the first on-ice casualty of the four-day lockout.

The league is wiping out all games through Sept. 30, a move it deems "necessary because of the absence of a collective bargaining agreement" with the players' association.

The NHL also said the 2012 Kraft Hockeyville preseason game, scheduled for Oct. 3 in Belleville, Ontario, has been postponed until 2013, bringing the total to 60 games called off on Wednesday.

The regular season is scheduled to begin on Oct. 11.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the league has "no set policy on cancellations" of other games.

Also Wednesday, a person familiar with the plan says NHL employees at the league offices will switch to a four-day work week Oct. 1 because of the lockout.

The move will effectively cut salaries by 20 percent. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the NHL hadn't made the plan public.

The news was first reported by The Canadian Press.

The Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators have let staff go because of the lockout, while several other teams have said they don't have any plans to do so as of now.

The league locked out its players at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, its fourth shutdown since 1992.

The preseason cancellations included a Washington Capitals game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 26 in Baltimore.

Last year, in the inaugural Baltimore Hockey Classic, the Capitals hosted the Nashville Predators and drew a sold-out crowd.

Health News - The Ultimate Rx Guide for High Blood Pressure

New Book Offers News You Can Use on Managing Hypertension

NEW YORK? ? Blood pressure medications are currently failing millions of Americans, who continue to battle hypertension and remain at increased risk for heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Samuel J. Mann, a nationally-known hypertension specialist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, is the author of a new book "Hypertension and You: Old Drugs, New Drugs and the Right Drugs for Your High Blood Pressure."

This is one of the first books for the lay public that empowers readers to question their health care providers about their drug regimens, and seeks to help millions of Americans who are taking blood pressure medication to control their blood pressure and avoid side effects.

"Despite their best intentions many physicians continue to place their hypertensive patients on blood pressure medications, drug combinations or doses that may not be the best treatment available to them, says Dr. Mann. "I believe that with the medications we have, we can do much better than we are doing. My goal in writing this book is to explain the shortcomings of current treatment approaches, and present new and better approaches that can help to improve blood pressure control, reduce side effects of medications and lower health care costs."

Key points in the book include:

  • Measuring your blood pressure. The incorrect measurement of blood pressure at the doctor's office and at home is responsible for millions of people being on more medication than they need.
  • Diuretics. These medications are effective and inexpensive but are widely underused and underdosed, resulting in inadequate blood pressure control, unneeded multi-drug regimens and avoidable costs.
  • Dangers of beta-blockers. These drugs are responsible for an epidemic of fatigue and, in some cases, can also cause cognitive impairment. Ironically, in many cases, the patient does not even need to be on a beta-blocker!
  • Psychological factors. Hypertension linked to psychological factors responds to a different set of blood pressure drugs than other cases of hypertension.
  • Old drugs vs. new drugs. Some widely selling new drugs are not very good. Some fabulous old drugs are nearly forgotten and remain underused.

Samuel J. Mann, M.D., is a hypertension specialist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He has written more than 50 scientific articles and book chapters about hypertension. He has commented on medical news related to hypertension on major network television stations. His work has been featured in many newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, Newsday, Glamour, Longevity, and Bottom Line Health.

(AP) ? China said Wednesday it was investigating an incident where about 50 protesters surrounded the car of the U.S. ambassador, tried to block him from entering the embassy compound and ripped the car's flag.

Chinese police cleared roadblocks and some Japanese businesses reopened after days of large, sometimes violent protests in many cities over Japan's recent purchase of islands also claimed by Beijing.

In Beijing, the bitterness spilled over from the Japanese Embassy to the nearby U.S. Embassy. Video posted on YouTube showed a small number of protesters throwing small objects at U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke's car on Tuesday before Chinese security forces moved in to break up the crowd.

Locke told reporters Wednesday that Chinese authorities were "very quick" to move the demonstrators away. "It was all over in a matter of minutes, and I never felt in any danger," he said.

The U.S., a close ally of Japan, has said it is staying out of the dispute over the islands.

The incident came amid heightened vigilance for American diplomats following violent attacks on U.S. embassies in Libya, Yemen and Egypt. The embassy in Beijing said it has asked China's government to do everything possible to protect American facilities and personnel.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. has registered its concern with China both in Washington and Beijing, and Chinese authorities have expressed regret over the incident.

Nuland said the preliminary U.S. assessment was that the car was "a target of opportunity" for protesters who had gathered outside the nearby Japanese Embassy.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular news briefing Wednesday that the incident was "an individual case," but that China was investigating it.

The protests over the weekend were triggered by the Japanese government's decision last week to purchase some disputed East China Sea islands from their private Japanese owners. More demonstrations followed Tuesday, the 81st anniversary of Japan's invasion of China, an emotional remembrance that stoked the outrage.

Though the anti-Japan demonstrations have wound down, at least temporarily, there has been no progress in resolving the territorial dispute bedeviling relations between the two Asian economic powerhouses.

The rhetoric on both sides has remained uncompromising.

China's future leader, Xi Jinping, told visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Wednesday that Japan's purchase of the islands was a farce, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

"Japan should rein in its behavior and stop any words and acts that undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Xinhua quoted Xi as saying.

In Tokyo, former Japanese Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba said losing a piece of Japan would mean "losing the whole country."

The islands ? called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China ? are tiny rock outcroppings that have been a sore point between China and Japan for decades. Japan has claimed the islands since 1895. The U.S. took jurisdiction after World War II and turned them over to Japan in 1972.

Japan's government sees its purchase of some of the islands as a way to thwart a potentially more inflammatory move by the governor of Tokyo, who had wanted not only to buy the islands but also develop them. But Beijing sees Japan's purchase as an affront to its claims and its past calls for negotiations.

Beijing has sent patrol ships inside Japanese-claimed waters around the islands, and some state media have urged Chinese to show their patriotism by boycotting Japanese goods and canceling travel to Japan.

The islands are important mainly because of their location near key sea lanes in the East China Sea. They are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and as-yet untapped underwater natural resources.

Chinese state media have also reported that boats were headed to the waters around the disputed islands for seasonal fishing.

Hong, the foreign ministry spokesman, said such activities were within China's rights.

"The Diaoyu Islands have belonged to China since ancient times," he said. "It is totally legitimate and reasonable for Chinese fishing vessels to fish in relevant waters."

Watch the full secretly taped Romney fundraising video

The liberal Mother Jones magazine has published the full 50-minute video, above, of?Gov. Mitt Romney addressing a group of donors in Boca Raton, Fla., in May. In it, Romney takes questions from some of the donors and occasionally urges them to eat more, before ending his talk about 15 minutes before the tape ends.

Romney has already publicly commented on a clip from the surreptitiously recorded tape, parts of which were released Monday, in which he says that half the country supports President Barack Obama because they pay no income taxes, are dependent on the government and feel that they are victims. Romney said Monday that his statements were inelegantly worded but that he stands by their general meaning. He called for the full tape to be released, so that people can hear his comments in context.

The full video shows he was answering a question from a donor when Romney used the "47 percent" line. The donor had said he thinks Obama's administration has encouraged government dependency. "For the past three years, everybody's been told ... 'Don't worry, we'll take care of you,'" the donor says. "It's two months before the election, how do you convince everybody you've got to take care of yourselves?" Romney responds that he thinks 47 percent of the country is already hooked on government and will back Obama no matter what.

Earlier in his remarks, Romney said he is most disappointed in Obama for advancing "his attack on one America against the other America," a reference to the president's push to raise taxes on households making more than $250,000 a year.

Romney ?is also seen in the video occasionally dodging awkward encounters with the donors. At one point, the governor is making the case that he's still introducing himself to voters. "I'm not terribly well known," he says. A female donor then interrupts: "You're known as a rich boy! A rich boy!" Romney continues with his point, saying that "given those negative things" or the perceptions that he's battling, it's a good sign that he's so close to Obama in the polls.

The same donor tells Romney bluntly that she battles "misperceptions" about him that are alienating voters. "Women do not want to vote for you. Hispanics, a majority of them don't want to vote for you. College students don't," she says. The donor asks how they can help Romney win over these groups. He says the best thing they can do is "raise millions of dollars" to compete with the president's war chest.

Partial clips from the event have been online for months, but escaped widespread notice. An anonymous leaker began promoting audio-only clips from the fundraiser in May in comments on the Huffington Post's website, which caught the attention of Democratic researcher James Carter, former President Jimmy Carter's grandson. Carter alerted Mother Jones' David Corn, who competed with the Huffington Post to persuade the anonymous leaker to give him the full video, according to BuzzFeed. Finally, the leaker decided to give the clips to Corn, who published them Monday.
