Gaze-tracking illusion lets you draw with your eyes

IMAGINE drawing or writing on a screen with just your eyes. That's what a novel gaze-tracking software promises to do for people with locked-in syndrome.

Existing eye-writing systems involve focusing on a letter then blinking to select it. Moving your eyes smoothly enough to trace out words is hard because your eyes constantly make jerky motions known as saccades, unless you are tracking a moving object.

Jean Lorenceau at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, France, has found a way to fool your eyes into making smooth movements by using an optical illusion called "reverse phi motion".

Phi motion is the effect that turns a series of still photos into a movie, but reverse phi motion is weirder. Take a film of a moving white dot then turn the dot in every other frame black. The film will appear to run backwards. Lorenceau's system manipulates the illusion to trick you into thinking you are moving a dot around the screen with your eyes, so the motion is smooth. A gaze-tracking camera follows the right eye's movements to control a cursor on the screen. This lets you trace out numbers, letters or drawings. "It's like surfing, you move your eyes to get on the wave and once you're on you just slide with it," Lorenceau says.

Dell debuts new 27inch U2713HM monitor, its first AHIPS panel

What's this? Appearing on its Japanese blog, ahead of any English language announcement, Dell's new monitor pairs a backlit LED with a 27-inch AH-IPS display. The U2713HM marks the company's first Advanced High Performance IPS panel, which cranks viewing angles up to 178 degrees and adds Dell's name to a pretty exclusive list of manufacturers. The screen can output up to 2,560 x 1,440 (WQHD) resolution, with Dell promising a 37 percent reduction in energy consumption compared to the preceding U2711. If you've got HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA or DVI-D, you'll likely be well-prepared for the monitor, which also has a four-port USB 3.0 hub embedded. However, that high-quality panel corresponds with a suitably high price tag; on the other side of the Pacific, the U2713HM has been marked up at 50,000 yen ($637) and is available starting today.

Samsung: Galaxy Note 10.1 available globally this month

Note 10.1

The Galaxy Note 10.1 will finally arrive on store shelves internationally this month, Samsung has announced. The stylus-toting tablet has received hardware and software upgrades since we first saw it at Mobile World Congress in February, and now has a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM and a jazzed up version of Samsung's TouchWiz UX. The tablet's chassis itself has also been upgraded since we first saw it in Barcelona, and now features a slot to hold that pressure-sensitive "S Pen."

In today's announcement the manufacturer also highlighted capabilities like the "S Note" note-taking app first seen on the original Galaxy Note, as well as the ability to run multiple apps on a single screen. Samsung seems keen to target the Note 10.1 as a more practical tablet for students and business professionals, on account of the combination of pen input and a larger 10.1-inch screen.

The tablet's certainly had an interesting path to release. As we said, it appeared at MWC earlier this year before being sent back to the drawing board. And in the U.S., the tablet remains unannounced ahead of an event in New York City on Aug. 15. Despite this, one retailer already has stock, and says it's currently shipping out to customers across the country.

No pricing or exact release dates were specified in today's presser -- we'd expect these details to be worked out on a country-by-country basis. However, we do know the Galaxy Note 10.1 will be available at first in Wifi-only and HSPA flavors, with an LTE version due to arrive later in the year.

We've got today's full press release, and a complete spec list for the Note 10.1, after the break.

Gibson Guitar settles probe into illegal wood imports

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - Gibson Guitar Corp, which makes some of the world's most prized guitars, will pay a $300,000 penalty under a criminal enforcement agreement with federal prosecutors, after it admitted to possible illegal purchases of ebony from Madagascar, authorities said on Monday.

The agreement, announced by Justice Department officials in Washington, caps a probe into the Nashville-based guitar maker that began in 2009 when it came under suspicion of importing banned or protected wood from both Madagascar and India.

"As a result of this investigation and criminal enforcement agreement, Gibson has acknowledged that it failed to act on information that the Madagascar ebony it was purchasing may have violated laws intended to limit over-harvesting and conserve valuable wood species from Madagascar, a country which has been severely impacted by deforestation," said U.S. Assistant Attorney General Ignacia Moreno of the Justice Department's Environment and Natural Resources Division.

"Gibson has ceased acquisitions of wood species from Madagascar and recognizes its duty under the U.S. Lacey Act to guard against the acquisition of wood of illegal origin by verifying the circumstances of its harvest and export, which is good for American business and American consumers," Moreno said.

The century-old Lacey Act, originally passed to crack down on a booming trade in bird feathers used to adorn hats, was amended in 2008 to require that U.S. companies make detailed disclosures about wood imports.

Apart from the $300,000 penalty slapped on Gibson as part of the agreement, the legendary guitar maker will forfeit wood valued at $261,844 that was seized in the course of the investigation.

The Justice Department said Gibson would also pay $50,000 to the U.S. National Fish and Wildlife Foundation "to promote the conservation, identification and propagation of protected tree species."

Gibson Chief Executive Officer Henry Juszkiewicz was not immediately available for comment, the company said.

Correct Snoring And Everyone Will Sleep Soundly ? Health Care ...

Snoring is an obnoxious sleep noise, but could also indicate health problems. Snoring can be the result of a wide variety of causes, and the causes can differ based on the individual. Read on to learn the common causes of snoring, as well as your treatment options.

If your partner snores, try sleeping earlier than them to get more sleep before the noises start. If you are someone who is a light sleeper, then this may not work very well, but it?s always worth it to try!

A humidifier can help in your battle against snoring. A humidifier adds a constant supply of warm, moist vapor to the air. When you inhale the vapor, it moisturizes your airways, including the throat and nasal passages. This, in turn, can reduce your snoring.

TIP! Avoid eating food prior to bedtime, to help reduce snoring. Excessive body weight puts pressure on the diaphragm and increases snoring.

Do whatever you have to do to quit smoking. Smoking is something that can lead to snoring because it causes damage to the sensitive airways. Quitting smoking helps the respiratory system heal and slowly minimizes the health risks associated with it. People who suffer from congestion because of allergies or other causes are likely to snore. When congested, your airways and nasal passages become congested, this may result in air being blocked and you end up snoring. One option is to take a decongestant before your bedtime; however, you should only use products that are formulated for nighttime use. Otherwise, it may be difficult to fall asleep.

Essential Oils

TIP! Eat a bigger breakfast and lunch if you have snoring issues. If you have had two hearty meals, you will be able to eat a light dinner.

Essential oils may help cure your snoring problem. Certain essential oils, like eucalyptus and peppermint, are great in clearing congested nasal passages. They allow you to breathe more easily, which helps to alleviate any snoring issues. It is worth trying them out when you are congested. Alcohol and sleeping pills cause your nervous system and throat muscles to relax and make you snore. These can also cause sleep apnea, which can lead to cardiovascular disease. Therefore it is crucial that you avoid these substances. A first step towards the elimination of snoring is getting your allergies under control. Allergies can make nasal passages clogged which produces breathing problems. They will often breathe with their mouths since their nostrils are clogged, which causes snoring. Antihistamines, combined with a humidifier, can help to reduce both your allergies and your snoring.

TIP! If you regularly snore, you might want to carefully consider what you eat immediately before you go to sleep. Alcoholic beverages and muscle relaxers can relax your throat muscles.

If you are snoring, determine if it is caused by any of your medicines. Some prescription medications can dry out your nasal membranes, which can cause them to swell up and restrict airflow. Other medicines, such as sedatives and muscle relaxants, can cause such slackening of the muscles in your throat, that adequate breathing becomes difficult and snoring is more likely.

Nasal Passages

Heat and dry conditions contribute to increased snoring problems. Dry nasal passages may become clogged and make snoring worse. This is why you should let a window remain open, or make use of a humidifier in order to ensure the air stays moist, which causes your nasal passages to be moist as well.

TIP! Replacing your existing pillow with a new, firmer one can help you stop snoring. Using soft pillows allows your throat muscles to relax which in turn causes your airway to become more narrow.

Snoring can relate to what you regularly consume. For example, you should limit your intake of alcohol and sedatives. These types of things cause central nervous system decreases, which causes your body to be overly relaxed, causing your throat muscles and tissues not to be able to function properly. As you now know, snoring is way much more than just an annoying night-time noise, it could be the symptom of a health issue. Since there are many causes and since it depends on the person, what may work for one sufferer, may not work for another. But, the tips in the piece above can help you start addressing the problem.

Mars rover Curiosity nears make-or-break landing attempt

PASADENA, California | Sun Aug 5, 2012 10:16am EDT

PASADENA, California (Reuters) - The Mars rover Curiosity, on a quest for signs the Red Planet once hosted the building blocks of life, streaked into the home stretch of its eight-month voyage on Sunday nearing a make-or-break landing attempt NASA calls its most challenging ever.

Curiosity, the first full-fledged mobile science laboratory ever sent to a distant world, was scheduled to touch down inside a vast, ancient impact crater on Sunday at 10:31 p.m. Pacific time (1:31 a.m. EDT on Monday/0531 GMT on Monday).

Mission control engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Los Angeles acknowledge that delivering the one-ton, six-wheeled, nuclear-powered vehicle in one piece is a highly risky proposition, with zero margin for error.

But on the eve of Curiosity's rendezvous with Mars, JPL's team said the spacecraft and its systems were functioning flawlessly, and forecasts called for favorable Martian weather over the landing zone.

After a journey from Earth of more than 350 million miles (567 million km), engineers said they were hopeful the rover, the size of a small sports car, will land precisely as planned near the foot of a tall mountain rising from the floor of Gale Crater in Mars' southern hemisphere.

Flight controllers anticipate clear and calm conditions for touchdown, slated to occur in the Martian late afternoon. There may be some haze in the planet's pink skies from ice clouds, typical for this time of year, with temperatures at about 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

"We're on target to fly through the eye of the needle," Arthur Amador, the Mars Science Laboratory mission manager, told reporters at a briefing on Saturday, as Curiosity hurtled to within 2.8 million miles (4.5 million km) of its destination.

Facing deep cuts in its science budget and struggling to regain its footing after cancellation of the space shuttle program - NASA's centerpiece for 30 years - the agency has much at stake in the outcome of the $2.5 billion mission.

Mars is the chief component of NASA's long-term deep space exploration plans. Curiosity, the space agency's first astrobiology mission since the 1970s-era Viking probes, is designed primarily to search for evidence that the planet most similar to Earth may have once have harbored ingredients necessary for microbial life to evolve.

PACKED WITH GADGETS

The rover, formally called the Mars Science Lab, is equipped with an array of sophisticated chemistry and geology instruments capable of analyzing samples of soil, rocks and atmosphere on the spot and beaming results back to scientists on Earth.

Nearing the end of its journey encased in a capsule-like shell, Curiosity was essentially flying on automatic pilot, guided by a computer packed with pre-programmed instructions.

Mission control was due to activate the craft's backup computer on Sunday, ensuring that it will assume onboard command of the vessel should the primary computer fail during entry into the Martian atmosphere and its tricky descent to the surface.

Two hours before atmospheric entry, mission control will send its very last transmission to Curiosity, a "parameter update" giving the craft its exact position in space.

After that, controllers will have little to do but anxiously track Curiosity's progress as it flies into Mars' upper atmosphere at 13,000 miles per hour, 17 times the speed of sound, and begins a descent and landing sequence NASA refers to as "the seven minutes of terror."

Curiosity's fate will then hinge on a complex series of maneuvers that include a giant parachute deployment and a never-before-used jet-powered "sky crane" that must descend to the right spot over the planet, lower the rover to the ground on nylon tethers, cut the cords and fly away.

"This is the most challenging landing we've ever attempted," said Doug McCuistion, NASA's Mars Exploration Program director.

If everything works according to plan, controllers at JPL will know within a minute or two that the Curiosity is safely on the ground, alerted by a terse radio transmission relayed to Earth from the Mars orbiter Odyssey flying overhead.

If no landing signal comes, it could take hours or days for scientists to learn if radio communications with the rover were merely disrupted or that it crashed or burned up during descent.

From 154 million miles (248 million kilometers) away, 1,400 scientists, engineers and guests are expected to tensely wait at JPL to learn Curiosity's fate. Another 5,000 people will be watching from the nearby California Institute of Technology, the academic home of JPL.

A NASA Television broadcast from mission control will take over the giant Toshiba screens in Times Square in New York City.

In a good-luck tradition dating back to the 1970s, engineers in the control room at JPL plan to break out cans of roasted peanuts about an hour before landing.

Seven dead in Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting

A worshiper prays outside a Sikh temple after the shooting. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/AP)

At least seven people were killed, including the suspected gunman, in a mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., south of Milwaukee on Sunday.

According to police, 911 dispatchers received multiple calls from the temple at approximately 10:25 a.m. local time. An officer who responded to the scene was treating a victim when he was "ambushed" by the suspected gunman in the parking lot, Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said. The veteran officer was shot multiple times and rushed to Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital where he underwent surgery, Edwards said.

The suspect was shot and killed by a second officer, police said. The gunman was not identified, and no motive was released.

Tactical units conducting a sweep of the 17,000-square-foot temple discovered four bodies inside and three?including the gunman?in the parking lot. Edwards said "weapons" were recovered, but would not elaborate. According to CNN, two semi-automatic handguns were recovered at the scene, and member of the temple described the gunman as tall male with what appeared to be a "9/11 tattoo."

There were initial, unconfirmed reports of multiple shooters and a hostage situation, though police said they believe there was just one gunman.

A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said a total of three victims, including the officer, were admitted?two with gunshot wounds to the face and one with gunshot wounds to the abdomen. All three are in critical condition, the spokesman said. Other area hospitals were initially told to prepare for as many as 20 victims, though it appears that figure was precautionary.

Law enforcement officials are treating the case as an "act of domestic terrorism," police said, and the FBI is leading the investigation. The names of the victims in Sunday's shooting were not released.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Satwant Kaleka, the president of the temple, was one of the victims taken to Froedtert Hospital, according to his nephew, Gurmit Kaleka.

Dozens of worshipers, including women and children, were gathering for a meal before an 11:30 a.m. prayer service at the temple, or gurdwara, when the shooting occurred. There are about 500 members in the congregation, officials said.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as worshipers reportedly hid inside closets within the building after the gunman opened fire inside.

President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting shortly before 1 p.m. (ET) by chief counterterrorism adviser John Brennan, a senior administration official told Yahoo News.

"Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin," Obama said. "At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded. My administration will provide whatever support is necessary to the officials who are responding to this tragic shooting and moving forward with an investigation. As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

Mitt Romney released a statement, too. "This was a senseless act of violence and a tragedy that should never befall any house of worship," Romney said. "Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Oak Creek Sikh community. We join Americans everywhere in mourning those who lost their lives and in prayer for healing in the difficult days ahead."

Wis. Gov. Scott Walker said his office is working with the FBI and local law enforcement in its investigation.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence," Walker said. "At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends."

The Indian Embassy in Washington called it a "tragic incident" and said it has been in touch with the National Security Council and local authorities to monitor the situation.

Sunday's shooting comes less than a month after the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre, when 12 people were killed and 58 wounded during a midnight screening of "Dark Knight Rises."

Sikhism is a 500-year-old monotheist faith with about 27 million followers worldwide, including about 300,000 in the United States.

Since 9/11, Sikh groups in the United States have reported a rise in bias attacks. There have been more than 700 reports of hate-related incidents against Sikhs since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, according to the Associated Press. "Sikhs don't practice the same religion as Muslims," the AP noted, "but their long beards and turbans often cause them to be mistaken for Muslims, advocates say."

In the wake of the shooting in Wisconsin, law enforcement officials in other cities, including New York City, increased patrols near Sikh temples on Sunday. However, there is no known threat against Sikh temples in New York, the NYPD said.

NASA braces for "7 minutes of terror" Mars plunge

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Hurtling ever closer to Mars, NASA's most high-tech interplanetary rover prepared for the riskiest part of its journey: diving through the Martian atmosphere and pulling off a new landing routine.

Nerves will be on overdrive Sunday night as the Curiosity rover attempts a dizzying "seven minutes of terror" routine that ends with it being lowered by cables inside a massive crater if all goes according to script.

Hours before the 10:31 p.m. PDT planned touchdown, Curiosity was in excellent health and speeding toward the top of Mars' thin atmosphere.

"We're having a very clean ride right now. It's a little spooky," said Allen Chen, an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $2.5 billion mission.

Not ones to tempt fate, flight controllers planned to break out the "good luck" peanuts before Curiosity takes the plunge as part of a long-running tradition.

One scientist who can relate to the building anxiety is Cornell University planetary scientist Steve Squyres, who headed NASA's last successful rover mission in 2004.

This time around, Squyres has a supporting role and planned to view the landing with other researchers in the "science bullpen."

"Landing on Mars is always a nerve-racking thing. You're never going to get relaxed about something like landing a spacecraft on Mars," said Squyres.

Sunday's touchdown attempt was especially intense because NASA is testing a brand new landing technique. There's also extra pressure because budget woes have forced NASA to rejigger its Mars exploration roadmap.

"There's nothing in the pipeline" beyond the planned launch of a Mars orbiter in 2013, said former NASA Mars czar Scott Hubbard, who teaches at Stanford University.

Curiosity was launched to study whether the Martian environment ever had conditions suitable for microbial life.

The voyage took over eight months and spanned 352 million miles. The landing will be the trickiest part of the journey. Because Curiosity weighs nearly a ton, engineers drummed up a new and more controlled way to set the rover down.

The last Mars rovers, twins Spirit and Opportunity, were cocooned in air bags and bounced to a stop in 2004.

The plans for Curiosity called for a series of braking tricks, similar to those used by the space shuttle, and a supersonic parachute to slow it down. Next: Ditch the heat shield used for the fiery descent.

And in a new twist, engineers came up with a way to lower the rover by cable from a hovering rocket-powered backpack. At touchdown, the cords cut and the rocket stage crashes a distance away.

The nuclear-powered Curiosity, the size of a small car, is packed with scientific tools, cameras and a weather station. It sports a robotic arm with a power drill, a laser that can zap distant rocks, a chemistry lab to sniff for the chemical building blocks of life and a detector to measure dangerous radiation on the surface.

It also tracked radiation levels during the journey to help NASA better understand the risks astronauts could face on a future manned trip.

After several weeks of health checkups, the six-wheeled rover could take its first short drive and flex its robotic arm.

The landing site near Mars' equator was picked because there are signs of water everywhere, meeting one of the requirements for life as we know it. Inside Gale Crater is a 3-mile-high mountain, and images from space show the base appears rich in minerals that formed in the presence of water.

Previous trips to Mars have uncovered ice near the Martian north pole and evidence that water once flowed when the planet was wetter and toastier unlike today's harsh, frigid desert environment.

Curiosity's goal: To scour for basic ingredients essential for life, including carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur and oxygen. It's not equipped to search for living or fossil microorganisms. To get a definitive answer, a future mission needs to fly Martian rocks and soil back to Earth to be examined by powerful laboratories.

The mission comes as NASA retools its Mars exploration strategy. Faced with tough economic times, the space agency pulled out of partnership with the European Space Agency to land a rock-collecting rover in 2018. The Europeans have since teamed with the Russians as NASA decides on a new roadmap.

Despite Mars' reputation as a spacecraft graveyard, humans continue their love affair with the planet, lobbing spacecraft in search of clues about its early history. Out of more than three dozen attempts ? flybys, orbiters and landings ? by the U.S., Soviet Union, Europe and Japan since the 1960s, more than half have ended disastrously.

One NASA rover that defied expectations is Opportunity, which is still busy wheeling around the rim of a crater in the Martian southern hemisphere eight years later.

Obama turns 51; plays golf, will go to Camp David

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama celebrated his 51st birthday Saturday with a round of golf and plans for a quiet weekend at Camp David, taking a break from campaigning three months before Election Day.

Obama played golf with a group of friends and aides at Andrews Air Force Base before heading to the presidential getaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains.

He returns to campaign mode soon enough, with fundraisers in Connecticut on Monday and campaign rallies in Colorado on Wednesday and Thursday.

Next weekend, Obama will hold several birthday-themed fundraisers in Chicago, including one at his family's South Side home. Obama's campaign used the event to drum up small-dollar donations before the end of the July fundraising deadline, offering two lucky winners the chance to attend the fundraiser at Obama's red brick home.

In an email to supporters, Obama warned that his birthday "could be the last one I celebrate as president of the United States, but that's not up to me ? it's up to you." Obama's team has warned that he could be outspent by Republicans and GOP candidate Mitt Romney.

Obama got some early birthday wishes on Thursday during a rally in Florida, when supporters serenaded him with "Happy Birthday." The president joked that his birthday wishes "probably would have to do with electoral votes. Winning Florida wouldn't be a bad birthday present."

Republicans offered tongue-in-cheek birthday greetings. The Republican National Committee delivered a birthday cake to their counterparts at the Democratic National Committee on Friday featuring a picture of a smiling Obama next to the words, "You didn't bake this."

The inscription was a reference to a line from an Obama speech last month in which he said, "If you've got a business, you didn't build that." Romney has seized upon the line to question Obama's commitment to small business while Obama and Democrats have said the quote was taken out of context.

DNC officials promptly sent the cake back to RNC headquarters, along with a copy of a recent report by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center that found that Romney's tax proposal would give millionaires a broad tax cut at the expense of tax breaks enjoyed by many middle-class families. Romney's team has disputed the study, saying his tax plan would benefit all Americans.

In short, just a typical presidential birthday in an election year.

Japan blanks Egypt, reaches men's Olympic semis

Japan scores one goal early and two late to shut the door on Egypt and advance to the semifinals with a 3-0 victory.

Japan vs Egypt, Men's Quarterfinals

MANCHESTER, England (AP) ? Kensuke Nagai, captain Maya Yoshida and Yuki Otsu all scored against a 10-man Egypt team to put Japan through to the men's Olympic football semifinals Saturday.

Nagai scored in the 14th minute after midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake stripped the ball off a defender near the halfway line, turned and ran down the right before firing in a hard cross just inside the penalty area. Nagai chested the ball down and turned around Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed Elshenawi and defender Saadeldin Saad, who both collided trying to deal with the danger and sprawled to the ground. Nagai slotted the ball into an empty net.

But Nagai picked up a leg injury during the goal and had to be stretchered off. He tried to come back on again, but was substituted in the 20th minute by forward Manabu Saito.

For Japan's second, Yoshida was unmarked and headed home in the 78th minute from a free kick. Japan's third came in the 83rd with another header, this time from Otsu, after a cross.

Egypt's best chance came in the 77th when a dipping shot from midfielder Mohamed El Neny appeared to be going in, but Japan goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda dived down to his right and made the save.

The Baby Pharaohs saw more of the ball after the first goal and started creating problems for the Japanese with better build-up and dangerous balls into the box. Right back Ahmed Fathi sent a low cross in for forward Emad Meteab, but he sent his shot wide from near the six-yard box in the 30th. Fathi sent in a similar cross in the 36th, which Japan defender Hiroki Sakai had to back-kick over his own crossbar.

Egypt was reduced to 10 men in the 41st when Saad was sent off for fouling Saito just before he entered the penalty area as the last man in a goal-scoring opportunity.

Japan started off the match brightly, dribbling past defenders and getting behind the back line with ease. But the Japanese failed to convert the chances until the goal. They continued to press forward in the second half, trying to take advantage of the extra man.

Japan's football team won a bronze in 1968 in Mexico, but failed to take part in another Olympics until the 1996 Atlanta Games. It was a long 28 years. Now, the Japanese are becoming a rising force in world football, drawing on a solid youth program. The national team qualified for the 2010 World Cup and advanced to the first knockout round before being eliminated in a penalty shootout by Paraguay after a 0-0 draw.

The under-23 team took the tournament by surprise to beat Spain in the group stage.

Enjoy Life More By Easing Arthritis Pain ? Searchipnews.com ...

If you suffer from arthritis, do your best to use diet and moderate exercise to lose any unnecessary weight you are carrying. Excess weight puts more stress on bones and joints and causes them to wear out more quickly. Losing weight will not only lessen the stress on your back, hips and knees, but also make it easier to engage in more physical exercise.

If you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, make sure you?re getting enough omega-3 in your diet. If you?re not, consider taking a supplement like fish oil to help get those levels up. Studies have shown that omega-3 has many anti-inflammatory benefits for those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.

Through exercise, you can improve your arthritis symptoms as well as improve your overall health and fitness. Exercise helps keep your joints moving and it strengthens the muscles around your joints. It also promotes the health of your bones and keeps them strong. By participating in daily exercise, you will be able to complete basic daily activities more easily.

Let the sun in. Vitamin D has been shown to help relieve some symptoms of arthritis, and sunshine is well-known for increasing positive thoughts and bettering moods. Opening your blinds for around fifteen minutes every day can be enough to give you some great benefits, while still being in the comfort of your home.

Elevate your legs to relieve foot and knee pain. Most people who suffer from arthritis have it the worst in their knees and ankles. Elevating your legs can help to relieve swelling and inflammation, and quickly bring pain to a standstill. Try laying on a couch, and putting your legs up on the armrest.

If you are uncomfortable using a particular type of medication your doctor recommends, or if you feel that a particular kind of therapy is just not right for you, be sure to speak up and tell your doctor. There are plenty of choices available in arthritis therapy. Your course of treatment should fit you perfectly.

Find a hobby that you can easily perform. Many people who suffer from arthritis spend their days wishing they had something they could actually do, and you can prevent this boredom by searching out your own new hobby. Whether it is painting or dancing, having something to get you moving will keep you healthy.

Turn up the music! Listening to your favorite music can lighten your mood and help you forget your pain for a little while. It has been shown in research that listening to music can ease your arthritis pain. So keep your favorite tunes close to hand and when the pain starts tune it out with the music.

If you are having trouble walking because of arthritis pain in your legs, ankles, and hips, try using a cane. Using a cane will help take almost 20 percent of your body weight off of your lower body joints. Some people will associate a cane with having a disability, but if it will reduce your pain, who cares what anyone else thinks.

Always protect your joints when you are dealing with arthritis. Keep your joints moving throughout the day and avoid holding them in the same position for too long a period of time. Always consider how to best execute a task to minimize stress to your joints.

People with arthritis are dealing with both chronic pain and chronic fatigue. Set priorities for your day and stick to them. There will only be so much you can accomplish on a bad day. Figure out what?s most important and focus on getting that done, instead of trying to fight the pain and fatigue and do everything anyway.

In conclusion, you know not only that there is more than one type of arthritis that can develop, but there are different ways to identify and treat it. Hopefully you will find this information useful and that it will allow you to help yourself or other people that are afflicted with this painful disease.

Stem cell findings point toward new cancer treatments

When cancers are treated, tumors may shrink but then come roaring back. Now studies on three different types of tumors suggest a key reason why: The cancers are fueled by stem cells that chemotherapy drugs don't kill.

The findings ? made by independent research teams that used mice to study tumors of the brain, intestines and skin ? could change the approach to fighting cancers in humans, experts said.

Properties of these so-called cancer stem cells can be investigated so researchers can devise strategies for killing them off, said Luis F. Parada, a molecular geneticist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and senior author of one of the studies published Wednesday.

"Everything has a soft underbelly once you understand it well," Parada said. "With all the modern molecular techniques and modern approaches we have, we should be able to find their soft underbelly."

Cancer researchers have long suspected ? and some pioneering studies have strongly suggested ? that specific cells within tumors are responsible for their continued growth. But the earlier experiments hadn't convinced everyone, and the hypothesis has been controversial.

The three papers published by the journals Nature and Science "really should seal the deal," said cancer biologist Owen Witte, director of the Broad Stem Cell Research Center at UCLA.

"People can stop arguing," he said. "Now they can say, 'OK, the cells are here. We now need to know how to treat them.' "

All three studies used molecular tricks that allowed scientists to mark certain tumor cells with bright colors. When these marked cells divided, all of the daughter cells were similarly colored. This permitted the researchers to see whether any old cell in a tumor can continue to fuel its growth or if only a subset of cells is responsible.

The three groups used different experimental approaches and different kinds of cancer, but all of them found the latter to be true.

Parada's group, whose work was published in Nature, studied an aggressive cancer called glioblastoma that arises when brain cells called glia turn rogue. The scientists started with a hunch ? if a cancer stem cell existed, it would have biological similarities to the stem cells that normally exist in the brain.

To test whether this was true, the team created glioblastoma-prone mice whose brain stem cells glowed green. When those cells divided, their daughter cells contained some of the green dye too. After enough generations, the dye was diluted away.

Sure enough, the mice developed brain tumors. When the researchers examined those tumors, they found a small number of green-glowing cells that weren't actively dividing, unlike the rest of the tumor.

It looked as though the scientists had detected cancer stem cells.

Next, the scientists treated the mice with a chemotherapy drug that kills rapidly dividing tumor cells. When the tumors grew back, as glioblastomas generally do, the scientists used other chemical tricks to see that the new cells were all descendants of the green-glowing cells that weren't killed by the drug.

The next step was to see what would happen if the cancer stem cells were wiped out, a test that was possible because of the way the mice were genetically constructed. Without the stem cells, the tumors never grew as large and the animals lived longer.

The scientists concluded that they had destroyed the wellspring of cells that renew the tumor when other cancer cells within the mass stop dividing.

In the two other papers, cancer cells with stem-cell-like properties were found in mouse intestinal adenomas, which give rise to intestinal cancers, by Dr. Hans Clevers at the Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands; and in squamous cell skin tumors by Dr. Cedric Blanpain at the Free University of Brussels. Those papers were published in Science and Nature, respectively.

There are still many unknowns, said MIT cancer researcher Robert Weinberg, who wasn't involved in the studies. Among them: Do these cells come from a tissue's normal stem cells or somewhere else? What makes them turn rogue? Do most ? or even all ? cancers work this way?

Even so, the implications are obvious, he and others said: Doctors can't just go after the rapidly dividing cells if they want to effectively fight a cancer.

"Unless we treat the cell of origin, we won't cure the patient," said Dr. Jenny Chang, director of the Cancer Center at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Today, cancer medications generally kill only rapidly dividing cells, and scientists don't yet know enough about cancer stem cells to target them. Biotech companies and academics are working on the problem.

Overall, scientists are finding that cancers are grotesque caricatures of normal body tissues, said John E. Dick, senior scientist at Toronto's Princess Margaret Cancer Center, whose work in the 1990s provided early evidence for stem cells in leukemia.

Just as healthy tissues contain a mix of cells ? ones that are dividing, ones that have taken on distinct identities, and stem cells that periodically replenish the tissue ? so, too, do cancers.

And just as normal tissue growth involves a complicated dance of chemical messages among cells, so, too, might the growth of cancers.

That complexity makes the prospect of devising new therapies seem daunting, Dick said. But, he added, it opens up a whole new menu of strategies that scientists can try.
