Milky Way struck 100 million years ago, still rings like a bell

An international team of astronomers have discovered evidence that our Milky Way had an encounter with a small galaxy or massive dark matter structure perhaps as recently as 100 million years ago, and as a result of that encounter it is still ringing like a bell.

The discovery is based on observations of 300,000 nearby Milky Way stars by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Stars in the disk of the Milky Way move up and down at a speed of about 20-30 kilometers per second while orbiting the center of the galaxy at a brisk 220 kilometers per second. The positions and motions of these nearby stars weren't quite as regular as previously thought, according to the study results.

"We clearly observe unexpected differences in the Milky Way's stellar distribution above and below the Galaxy's mid-plane having the appearance of a vertical wave ? something that nobody has seen before," says Queen's University physicist Larry Widrow, lead researcher on the project.

The researchers have not been able to identify the celestial object that passed through the Milky Way. It could have been one of the small satellite galaxies that move around the center of our galaxy, or an invisible structure such as a dark matter halo. It might not have been a single isolated event in the past, and it may even be ongoing.

The researchers discovered a small but statistically significant difference in the distribution of stars north and south of the Milky Way's midplane when analyzing SDSS data. For more than a year, they explored various explanations of this north-south asymmetry but were unable to solve the mystery. So they began exploring whether the data was telling them something about recent events in the Galaxy's history.

Scientists know of more than 20 visible satellite galaxies that circle the center of the Milky Way, with masses ranging from one million to one billion solar masses. There may also be invisible satellites made of dark matter. There is six times as much dark matter in the universe as ordinary, visible matter. Astronomers' computer simulations have found that this invisible matter formed hundreds of massive structures that move around our Milky Way.

These dark matter satellites, because of their abundance, are more likely than the visible satellite galaxies to cut through the Milky Way's mid-plane and cause vertical waves.

Computer simulations indicate that over the next 100 million years or so, our galaxy will "stop ringing". The north-south asymmetry will disappear and the vertical motions of stars in the solar neighborhood will revert back to their equilibrium orbits unless we get hit again.

Collaborators on the project include Brian Yanny and Scott Dodelson (US Department of Energy's Fermilab), Susan Gardner, (University of Kentucky) and Hsin-Yu Chen (University of Chicago).

The results have been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

As a result, the plan endorsed by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and a group of regional powers in Geneva Saturday seemed unlikely to reverse Syria?s slide toward all-out? war ? a slide some leaders and regional experts have warned could degenerate into a dangerous regional conflict.

The watered-down plan, based on a stronger proposal initiated by UN and Arab League Syria envoy Kofi Annan, calls for a transitional government whose participants would be determined by Syrians. The plan also calls on the Syrian government forces and the rebels to recommit themselves to a cease-fire called earlier this year that never took hold.

Mr. Annan said after the meeting that the adopted plan could take a year to implement ? a long stretch of time that seems almost certain to witness more violence, especially since the plan includes no incentives for or constraints on the warring factions.?

Annan?s original plan had implicitly ruled out participation in any political transition by Mr. Assad and his closest lieutenants associated with more than a year of horrendous bloodletting. But Russia stood by its objections to any international action compelling Assad to step down.

The new plan allowed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to insist in remarks after the meeting that Assad is closer than ever to falling from power. Assad ?will still have to go, he will never pass the mutual consent test given the blood on his hands,? Secretary Clinton said.

But she added that it is now up to Russia and China, who have stood in the way of other international initiatives on Syria, to work from the plan they joined in adopting Saturday to ease Assad out of power.

?It is now incumbent on Russia and China to show Assad the writing on the wall,? she said. Clinton had met one-on-one with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Saint Petersburg Friday, but had been unable to win Russia?s acceptance of even an implicit call for Assad to give up power.

The vagueness of the plan adopted Saturday suggested that world powers decided it was better to have a weak outcome than to announce their failure to come together over a crisis that many leaders and regional experts have warned for months could end up sparking a broader conflict.?? ?

Houston honored, Kanye, Jay-Z win top award

Cissy Houston's tribute to her late daughter was the emotional highlight of Sunday's BET Awards, a show that was defined by extended bleeps and the vulgarities that censors failed to catch onstage throughout the night.

Whitney Houston's mother gave a rousing performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" that left the crowd in tears, including Beyonce and Melanie Fiona.

Mariah Carey opened the tribute with memories of her friend. She was followed by a moving number by Monica. Brandy, heavily influenced by Houston, sang two of the late singer's hits. Chaka Khan blazed the stage with "I'm Every Woman," which Houston remade. Gary Houston, Whitney's brother, also performed.

But the nearly four-hour BET Awards was more like the Bleep Awards, as entire segments of performances from Nicki Minaj to Rick Ross were muted out due to foul language.

It started during the opening number by Kanye West's G.O.O.D. music group, which included Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz. There were long moments of censored silence when the rappers performed "Mercy," though not all the offending words were bleeped out. Moments later, Samuel L. Jackson, the show's host, was joined by Spike Lee as they did a comedic version of Jay-Z and West's hit song "... In Paris," to laughs.

"Two distinguished Morehouse men," Lee joked after the performance, referencing the alma mater of the two.

The censor police also worked overtime when Rick Ross performed with his Maybach Music Group and during Minaj's performance and acceptance speech for best female hip-hop artist. Minaj's win was her third consecutive time taking the prize.

"I really, really appreciate BET for keeping this category alive, and I appreciate all the female rappers doing their thing, past, present and future," she said, before uttering an obscenity.

Gospel star Yolanda Adams, who also performed, gently took some of her peers to task as she won best gospel artist, urging them to act mature and use their fame wisely.

"We need all of y'all," she said. "I'm saying the world needs everyone in this room. Please make sure that you use your gift responsibly, 'cause we're watching. Our babies are watching, and they want to be like us."

West and Jay-Z won the ceremony's top prize, earning video of the year for "Otis." They also won best group.

West, who was up for seven awards, was the top nominee. Beyonce was the second most nominated act with six. She won video director of the year (along with Alan Ferguson) and best female R&B artist and thanked the genre and her female influences.

"I fell in love with music by listening to R&B. It's the core of who I am," she said, giving special thanks to Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige and "Whitney Houston, my angel."

When she lost video of the year to Jay-Z and West, she playfully hit her husband and laughed. The joking continued: Moments later, as West was giving his acceptance speech, Jay-Z interrupted him and said: "Excuse me Kanye, I'm gonna let you continue, but ...," and the audience erupted with laughter, recalling West's infamous interruption of Taylor Swift's MTV Video Music Awards speech a few years back.

Chris Brown was also a double winner. Kevin Hart ? who hosted the awards last year ? also won for best actor, Big Sean was named best new artist and Wale and Miguel's smooth hit "Lotus Flower Bomb" won best collaboration.

The tone of night fluctuated frequently, as the show shifted from hotly anticipated performances to solemn moments to irreverence. Usher performed his groove "Climax," and Nicki Minaj sported a blonde wig with pink tips as she performed the songs "Champion" and "Beez In the Trap," which featured 2 Chainz.

The night also featured some tributes to deceased greats: Chante Moore performed a medley of Donna Summer's hits and Valerie Simpson sang a song in honor of her husband and writing partner Nick Ashford. Don Cornelius, Dick Clark and Hal Jackson were remembered. Even West offered tributes: after his performance, he name-dropped Rodney King and Whitney Houston in a verse that got cheers from the crowd, including his girlfriend, Kim Kardashian.

Presenters included Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington and Jamie Foxx, who wore a T-shirt that had a picture of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen killed by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.

Frankie Beverly featuring Maze were honored with the lifetime achievement award, and they were serenaded with performances by Tyrese, Faith Evans and Joe.

D'Angelo also performed, his first televised performance in years as he attempts a comeback.

Brown also performed in his first televised appearance since the New York City nightclub brawl between his entourage and Drake's. Brown, his girlfriend, his bodyguard and NBA star Tony Parker were among those injured in the June 14 encounter, where bottles were thrown.

Drake, however, didn't show, despite being nominated.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ? Mississippi's only abortion clinic was open Monday after a federal judge temporarily blocked a law from being enforced that the clinic says could regulate it out of business.

The owner of Jackson Women's Health Organization said it was "business as usual" and the clinic's two physicians will continue to see patients and do abortions unless a court orders them to stop.

"Mississippi is still part of this country and still does have to abide by the Constitution," Diane Derzis told reporters inside the clinic as several abortion opponents prayed and sang hymns outside.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan issued a temporary restraining order Sunday to stop Mississippi from enforcing a law requiring any physician doing abortions at the clinic to be an OB-GYN with privileges to admit patients to a local hospital. The order came the same day the law was to take effect.

Because of the judge's order, the state Health Department canceled an inspection it originally planned to do Monday to see if the clinic is complying with the new law, a department spokeswoman said.

The two physicians who do abortions at the clinic have applied for hospital privileges but haven't been granted them. Derzis said she doesn't expect them to be given the access, partly because she believes hospitals don't want abortion protesters outside on their sidewalks.

The clinic filed a federal lawsuit June 27, challenging the law's constitutionality under Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that established a nationwide right to abortion. The lawsuit also says the admitting privileges requirement is not medically necessary.

Derzis said that since she took over the clinic in 2010, no patient has been taken from there directly to a hospital. She said a local physician who doesn't do abortions at the clinic has been available to meet patients at a hospital, if necessary.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has said he believes the new law will protect women's health. He has also said he wants Mississippi to be "abortion-free."

Jordan will hear arguments July 11 about issuing an injunction to extend his block of the law.

Derzis said the clinic was busier than usual last week because some patients thought they wouldn't be able to get an abortion in Mississippi if the new law were in effect starting this week. She said the patients were "absolutely aware" of the law.

"They were insistent that they been seen," she said.

Neither of the physicians who do abortions at the clinic was working Monday, but Derzis said that was normal for the first day of the business week. Clinic employees were taking calls from prospective patients.

With temperatures above 90 degrees, some abortion opponents carried large umbrellas for shade as they stood Monday outside the clinic in the Fondren neighborhood. Among them were members of the groups Pro-Life Mississippi and Personhood Mississippi.

Some carried signs with slogans such as "Let us help you love your baby" and "It's easy to be pro 'choice' when you're not the one being killed."

One of the abortion opponents was Melissa Steen, 25, who lives in the Jackson suburb of Pearl.

Steen she had an abortion at the clinic in August 2007, when she was in an abusive relationship. She said her boyfriend threatened to hurt her unless she ended the pregnancy. Now, Steen said, she goes to the clinic often to try to persuade women not to have abortions.

"It's something that I live with, but I regret it," Steen said. "Sometimes at night, I will go outside and sit in my driveway and look at the stars and cry."

The abortion opponents prayed and sang "We Shall Overcome" and hymns such as "Amazing Grace" and "It Is Well With My Soul." They could be seen and heard through the tinted windows as Derzis talked to reporters.

"This is life in America for a woman seeking an abortion now," Derzis said inside the clinic's waiting area. "It's not just Jackson, Miss. These here may be a little crazier than some other places. But this is the reality of a patient having an abortion in this country today, is she is going to most likely cross a picket line. She is going to be screamed at, harassed."

GOP candidates in Oklahoma's 2nd district want to see health care act repealed

The two, who will face off in an Aug. 28 run-off election to determine the GOP candidate for Democrat Dan Boren's seat in Congress, agree on one thing: "Obamacare" must be repealed.

Mullins and Faught were quick to shoot out press releases decrying the U.S. Supreme Court's Thursday decision that the law is constitutional.

Their Democratic counterparts were not so fast with their thoughts.

Neither sent press releases immediately after the ruling.

Campaign workers for Wayne Herriman said repeatedly that he was either on the telephone or in a meeting when contacted about the issue.

Neither Herriman nor his campaign responded to questions on the issue.

In a June 22 Pryor Times story, Herriman said the Affordable Care Act is too expensive in its present form but that it has its merits. Herriman does not want to repeal Obamacare, as he believes it can be made affordable, the paper reported.

Herriman's opponent on the Aug. 28 ballot, Rob Wallace, was willing to talk about the issue in a telephone interview Thursday but clearly didn't want to highlight it. He said the issue rarely comes up when he talks to 2nd District voters.

"Really nobody's talking about it," he said. "Everyone's talking about quality jobs. Everybody's talking about Social Security and Medicare and the preservation of those programs for the seniors. People are talking about water. I'm not getting the health-care question very often out on the campaign trail."

The law has some good features but also needs some changes, Wallace said.

Two of the law's popular changes - requiring insurance companies to let parents keep their children insured to age 26 and preventing insurance companies from refusing insurance because of pre-existing conditions - have been helpful in his own family and for many other Oklahomans, Wallace said.

He also pointed to rules in the law to prevent insurance companies from canceling coverage when clients get sick as the kind of reform that many people appreciate, but he said the job isn't finished.

"We've got reform to do in the system because we've got to do something to make sure that we make health care affordable to everybody," he said.

Inflation of health-care costs needs to be reduced, and the system can't overburden small businesses, he said.

Wallace said that like many people, he was surprised at the high court's decision.

In the 1st District, the two men vying to replace Republican John Sullivan in Congress took different positions on the ruling.

When asked about the Supreme Court's ruling, Republican nominee Jim Brindenstine's response was short and direct: "You can let folks know I'm definitely disappointed. The individual mandate is unconstitutional, and Obamacare needs to be repealed," he said.

John Olson, the Democratic nominee, said many parts of the law are broadly supported by Oklahomans.

"I have said all along that the so-called individual mandate should be called what the Supreme Court has affirmed: a tax on those who choose not to buy insurance. All of us use the health-care system, whether we have insurance or not," Olson said.

"I look forward to working in Congress to address the flaws in the (Affordable Care Act) and continue to improve and expand the right to affordable health care that we all share."

With both the Republican and Democratic candidates determined in Tuesday's primary election, Bridenstine and Olson face off in the Nov. 6 general election.
