Leaked BlackBerry Roadmap - Business Insider

Timothy A. Clary/AFP

Research in Motion CEO Thorsten Heins

A leaked BlackBerry roadmap, first uncovered by TechnoBuffalo, suggests the Canadian company is gearing up to launch a new tablet, and two "phablet" devices within the next year.?

According to the roadmap, BlackBerry will release a tablet, dubbed the B10, around Q3 of this year. Before Q1 2014, it looks like BlackBerry will introduce a phablet device. And by Q2 2014, we may see a new tablet-like device with a QWERTY keyboard.

The roadmap also depicts the already-released BlackBerry Z10, and the forthcoming Q10 with a QWERTY keyboard ? both devices sport the new BlackBerry 10 operating system.?

BlackBerry made its first attempt at a tablet device with the launch of the 7-inch PlayBook tablet in 2011. Despite it being one of the most-hyped consumer gadgets at the time, it ended up not doing well, as it lacked a lot of basic functions like email and calendar when it first shipped. BlackBerry eventually added that functionality, but by then, it was too late.?

Head on over to TechnoBuffalo to take a look at the leaked roadmap.

Marital conflict causes stress in children, may affect cognitive development

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Marital conflict is a significant source of environmental stress for children, and witnessing such conflict may harm children's stress response systems which, in turn, may affect their mental and intellectual development.

These conclusions come from a new study by researchers at Auburn University and the Catholic University of America. The study appears in the journal Child Development.

Researchers looked at 251 children from a variety of backgrounds who lived in two-parent homes. The children reported on their exposure to marital conflict when they were 8, providing information on the frequency, intensity, and lack of resolution of conflicts between their parents. The study gauged how children's stress response system functioned by measuring respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), an index of activity in the parasympathetic branch of the body's stress response system. RSA has been linked to the ability to regulate attention and emotion. Children's ability to rapidly solve problems and quickly see patterns in new information also was measured at ages 8, 9, and 10.

Children who witnessed more marital conflict at age 8 showed less adaptive RSA reactivity at 9, but this was true only for children who had lower resting RSA. In addition, children with lower baseline RSA whose stress response systems were also less adaptive developed mental and intellectual ability more slowly.

"The findings provide further evidence that stress affects the development of the body's stress response systems that help regulate attention, and that how these systems work is tied to the development of cognitive ability," explains J. Benjamin Hinnant, assistant professor of psychology at the Catholic University of America and one of the researchers.

T-Mobile acknowledges layoffs at Bellevue headquarters

TMobile acknowledges layoffs at Bellevue headquarters

It's never easy to share news of job losses, but that's the state of things at T-Mobile's US headquarters in Bellevue, Wash. Today, the carrier confirmed to us that layoffs are currently underway, which comes in advance of the UnCarrier's merger with MetroPCS. While T-Mobile representatives withheld specifics, The Seattle Times reports that somewhere between 200 and 300 employees have been laid off, whose jobs range from administrative assistants to senior vice presidents. This news follows reports of job cuts earlier this month, which are said to have affected more than 100 people in the marketing department and other divisions. For its part, T-Mobile suggests the decision was made in order to better focus its resources, which seems plausible, given its scrappy new approach in the mobile industry. It's certainly a bitter pill to swallow, but you'll find the carrier's statement after the break.

Proximity to coal-tar-sealed pavement raises risk of cancer, study finds

Mar. 28, 2013 ? People living near asphalt pavement sealed with coal tar have an elevated risk of cancer, according to a study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology. Much of this calculated excess risk results from exposures in children, age six or younger, to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the sealant.

"The increased cancer risk associated with coal-tar-sealed asphalt (CSA) likely affects a large number of people in the U.S. Our results indicate that the presence of coal-tar-based pavement sealants is associated with significant increases in estimated excess lifetime cancer risk for nearby residents," said E. Spencer Williams, Ph.D., principal author of the study and Baylor University assistant research scientist at the Center for Reservoir and Aquatic Systems Research in Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences.

Researchers from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and the in Austin, Texas, are the first to report on the potential human health effects of PAHs in settled house dust and soil in living spaces and soil adjacent to parking lots sealed with coal-tar-based products.

"Exposure to these compounds in settled house dust is a particularly important source of risk for children younger than six years of age, as they are expected to ingest this material at higher rates," Williams said. "This indicates that the use of coal-tar-based pavement sealants magnifies aggregate exposures to PAHs in children and adults in residences adjacent to where these products are used and is associated with human health risks in excess of widely accepted standards."

Data on PAHs in settled house dust used for this analysis were published previously by the same authors. In that study, settled house dust and parking lot dust were sampled for 23 ground-floor apartments in Austin, Texas. The parking lot surfaces adjacent to the apartments were coal-tar-sealed asphalt, asphalt-based sealant over asphalt pavement, or unsealed concrete. Concentrations of PAHs were 25 times higher in house dust in residences adjacent to coal-tar-sealed pavement compared to those with other pavement types. "This study was the first to find a strong association between a product or a behavior and PAHs in house dust," said Barbara Mahler, the USGS research hydrologist who oversaw the study.

For this study, doses and risk associated with residences adjacent to unsealed asphalt lots were considered relative to those adjacent to (CSA) parking lots. Benzo(a)pyrene concentrations in CSA-affected settled house dust were high relative to those reported in most parts of the U.S. where coal-tar-based sealcoat is not used (California and Arizona). Data for PAHs in coal-tar-sealed asphalt-affected soils and unsealed asphalt-affected soils are available from samples from New Hampshire and suburban Chicago.

The analysis did not consider exposure to the dust on the pavement itself, which has PAH concentrations 10s to 100s of times higher than those in house dust or soil, or inhalation of air over sealed pavement. "Over time, about half of the PAHs in the sealcoat are released into the air, and concentrations in air are extremely high, particularly in the hours to days after application," said Peter Van Metre, USGS research hydrologist and author of two papers on volatilization of PAHs from sealcoat.

Sealcoat is a black, shiny substance sprayed or painted on the asphalt pavement of parking lots, driveways, and playgrounds to improve appearance and protect the underlying asphalt. An estimated 85 million gallons of coal-tar-based sealant are applied to pavement each year, primarily east of the Continental Divide in the U.S. and parts of Canada. Coal-tar-based pavement sealants are 15 to 35 percent coal-tar pitch, which has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Over time, the dried sealant is worn away from pavement surfaces, and the resulting mobile dust particles can be transported into nearby homes.

"Although the analysis presented here is based on a limited dataset, the results indicate that biomonitoring might be warranted to characterize the exposure of children and adults to PAHs associated with coal-tar-based pavement sealant," Williams said. "Further investigation is also needed into the impacts of coal-tar-based pavement sealants on PAH concentrations in indoor and outdoor environments."

Motorola support page indicates Droid Bionic to receive Jelly Bean in Q2 2013

Motorola Droid Bionic

While we wouldn't have blamed you for thinking ICS was the end of the road for the Droid Bionic, a Motorola Support page now indicates that a Jelly Bean update is on its way in Q2 2013. The handy little tool that Motorola introduced last year to help people find out about upcoming updates on their device reveals the information when selecting the Bionic from a list of support devices. As pointed out by Droid-Life, prominently at the bottom of the page it lists "Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) upgrade rollout expected to begin Q2 2013."

Now that's a pretty darn vague window, if true, to have the update "start" somewhere in the next three months, but we're not going to look this gift horse in the mouth. If it does come true, there are going to be some seriously happy Bionic owners out there.

Marriage health check recommended for older couples - Marilyn ...

Older couples should reassess their relationship as they approach retirement, Relate has claimed.

In a new survey of over 50s, conducted by for the relationships advisors by Ipsos MORI, a happy relationship came second only to good health in a list of the most important factors in a relationship. In addition, 91 per cent of the respondents described a happy relationship as ?very important? in retirement.

Meanwhile, three quarters of the over 50s said they would ?turn to their partner in times of need?.

Ruth Sutherland, Chief Executive of Relate, said older couples should use the approach of retirement to take a fresh look at their marriage.

?This survey tells us that strong and healthy relationships are a key ingredient for a good old age?. Retiring is a good time to think about your relationship ? is it ready for the changes that later life can bring? We know at Relate that people often don?t seek help until things are going badly wrong in their relationship and we?re encouraging people to invest early to get the most out of their old age.?

The advisory service has launched a new website focused on relationships in later life. It has also partnered with grandparents website Gransnet to offer an online ?relationship checker?. This asks users to consider whether their relationship is ?drifting in the doldrums of midlife or sailing off into the sunset.?

It notes:

?Midlife can be wearing on romance ? but relationships can also stay fit.?

Gransnet editor Geraldine Bedell ?said: ?We?re delighted to partner with Relate on this important campaign?.All sorts of things can knock relationships off course, but with a little TLC, relationships can also spiral upwards again surprisingly quickly.?

(AP) ? Bobby Brown has surrendered to authorities and will begin a 55-day jail sentence for a driving under the influence conviction.

Brown's attorney and a spokesman for the city attorney's office say the R&B singer turned himself in at a Los Angeles courthouse Wednesday.

Brown pleaded no contest to DUI and driving on a suspended license in February. He will also be required to serve four years on informal probation and complete an 18-month alcohol treatment program after he is released.

The conviction is Brown's second for DUI in less than a year. He avoided jail after pleading no contest to a March 2012 drunk driving case.

The 44-year-old New Edition singer is the ex-husband of deceased singer Whitney Houston.

Investing in Equestrian Property: Don't Horse ... - RealEstate.com

Investing in equestrian property is the ideal solution for horse owners who don?t want to rent a livery stable. If you are planning to own your property for a long time, the extra expense involved in purchasing a property with land suitable for horses could turn out to be a good investment over the years.

Competition for equestrian property can be intense, so it?s worth knowing exactly what to look for in order to act quickly when a suitable property comes on the market. Here is an essential guide to the most important things to consider when choosing your equestrian property.

Stables

Equestrian property is difficult to buy; this guide will help you through this difficult processIt?s all well and good buying a property with a large patch of land for your horses, but you will also have to keep them in suitable stables. A property complete with stables will probably have a higher asking price, but it could save you a lot of money and hassle in the long term. Even small stables can cost thousands of dollars to construct, and larger stables can cost tens of thousands.

If there are no stables, you may have to get planning permission to erect them yourself, so always find out whether this is going to pose any difficulties before you invest in a property.

Land Requirements

You are going to need a lot of land to look after a horse properly. How much exactly? The answer depends on whether the pasture is of a high quality and how many horses you have (as well as how large they are). However, as a general guide, aim for at least 1 acre of land per small horse, but preferably more.

Also, make sure that you plan ahead. You may want to keep more horses on your land in the future, and you will need to think about this in advance to avoid having to sell up again a few years down the line.

Location

You should also pay close attention to the location of the property in relation to nearby bridleways and riding schools. If you plan to take your horses out regularly, then it is a good idea to reduce travel times as much as possible.

Getting In and Out

You are going to need to take your horse out from time to time, so having suitable access to your property is essential. Will you be able to move your horses in and out of the property without any problems? If the driveway is not suitable, then this may require some work, and this can significantly add to your overall costs.

Fencing

Horse fencing for equestrian real estateSuitable fencing is essential, and this means fencing that is strong enough and high enough to keep your horses safely inside the area. Hedges are not the best idea because they take a long time to grow and are not as reliable. Wooden fences are a better option. Fencing the entire enclosure will be quite expensive, so make sure that you are prepared for the costs involved. If you have a few acres of land, the cost can quickly rise to thousands of dollars.

Potential Dangers

Looking after a horse comes with many challenges, but one thing that you will have to think about is the hidden danger posed by weeds. Ragwort is dangerous for horses and can even kill them. Even worse, it?s hard to get rid of and spreads incredibly easily, so check the land carefully before you make any decisions on buying a property. Even better, check the surrounding fields as well because ragwort can spread to your field from a neighboring one, and you will have all sorts of problems trying to get rid of it.

Choose Your Equestrian Property With Care

Choosing an equestrian property is a decision that you should make very carefully. There is so much more involved in purchasing this type of property than a standard property, and there are many important factors to consider. Get you decision wrong, and you could find yourself spending a lot of money trying to rectify problems that you should have spotted in the first place. If you have any doubts, it is best to work alongside an agent who has experience in the local area and in equestrian properties to ensure that the purchase goes as smoothly as possible.

Somatic symptom disorder: New disorder could classify millions of people as mentally ill

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Millions of people could be mislabeled as mentally ill when psychiatry's bible of diagnoses is updated in May, warns a senior doctor.

The next edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) -- used around the world to classify mental disorders -- will include a new category of somatic symptom disorder.

But Allen Frances, Chair of the current (DSM-IV) task force warns that the DSM-5 definition of somatic symptom disorder "may result in inappropriate diagnoses of mental disorder and inappropriate medical decision making."

The new category will extend the scope of mental disorder classification by eliminating the requirement that somatic symptoms must be "medically unexplained" he explains. In DSM-5, the focus shifts to "excessive" responses to distressing, chronic, somatic symptoms with associated "dysfunctional thoughts, feelings, or behaviours."

His concern is supported by the results of the DSM-5 field trial study. Somatic symptom disorder captured 15% of patients with cancer or heart disease and 26% with irritable bowel syndrome or fibromyalgia, and had a very high false-positive rate of 7% among health people in the general population.

He points out that, previous DSM criteria "have always included reminders to clinicians to rule out other explanations before concluding that any mental disorder is present. But his suggestions to the DSM-5 work group that similar reminders should be included this time were rejected.

Every diagnostic decision is a delicate balancing act between definitions that will result in too much versus too little diagnosis -- the DSM-5 work group "chose a remarkably sensitive definition that is also remarkably non-specific," warns Frances.

This, he argues "reflected a consistent bias throughout DSM-5 to expand the boundaries of psychiatric diagnosis with what I believe was insufficient attention to the risks of the ensuing false positive mislabeling."

"The DSM-5 diagnosis of somatic symptom disorder is based on subjective and difficult to measure cognitions that will enable a "bolt-on" diagnosis of mental disorder to be applied to all medical conditions, irrespective of cause," he adds.

"Clinicians are best advised to ignore this new category. When a psychiatric diagnosis is needed for someone who is overly worried about medical problems the more benign and accurate diagnosis is adjustment disorder."

Argentina blends devotion and marketing with pope

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- From slum chapels to Buenos Aires' imposing cathedral, Argentines celebrated their pope in Sunday Masses.

While the faithful prayed, vendors sold papal memorabilia and workers installed huge screens in the capital's central Plaza de Mayo in preparation for an all-night vigil ahead of Francis' formal installation ceremony, which will begin before dawn Tuesday Argentina time.

Mass in the slums began earlier and seemed more intimate. At the Villa 21-24, one of the capital city's most dangerous slums, many recalled how as an archbishop, Jorge Mario Bergoglio blessed their tiny Caacupe Virgin of the Miracles chapel.

Not everyone could fit inside its yellow walls with painted saints and many stood outside. Blanca Franco, a 58-year-old housewife, listened and shed some tears.

"I have feelings in my heart that only God knows," Franco said. "I'm happy about the appointment of our archbishop."

Nearby, Marcos Manuel Solar, a 28-year-old former drug addict, smiled widely as he told passers-by that he had received the rite of confirmation from the pope himself. Solar, who works at a soup kitchen, said he kicked the habit through a rehab program funded by the church.

In the heart of Buenos Aires, the mood was festive.

Vendors outside the Cathedral sold pins, calendars and posters with the image of Francis. The flag of the Vatican City seemed to be the most popular sales item.

Uma Eiras, a 10-year-old student, waved a tiny one with its two white-and-gold vertical bands and said she would hang it in her room.

There seemed not to be a single pew empty inside the giant national Cathedral and many followed the Mass on large screens across the street.

Sabina Podrez, a 39-year-old scrivener, said she attended the Mass out of hope that Argentina and the world will change under a new pope.

"We were going to work disheartened, with insecurity," Podrez said. "This is a breath of fresh air."

Assault weapons ban won't be in Dems' gun bill

(AP) ? The sponsor of a proposed assault weapons ban says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has told her that the ban will not be part of the initial gun control measure the Senate will debate next month.

California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein says that instead of being included in the measure, the ban will be offered as an amendment.

The decision, which was expected, means that the ban seems to stand little chance of surviving because of expected solid opposition from Republicans and likely defections from some moderate Democrats.

The ban was one of four gun control measures approved this month by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The others would expand required federal background checks for firearms buyers, increase federal penalties for illegal gun trafficking and boost school safety money.

(AP) ? Jim Larranaga was in the Miami locker room before a game during this regular season, talking about the importance of defense, when he decided words were not going to be enough to illustrate his point.

So the 63-year-old, two-time-hip-replacement-patient, white-haired, suit-wearing man fell backward like he was taking a charge, then started shouting.

"When you see that," said senior guard Durand Scott, "you want to run through a wall for this guy."

The wall had no chance. Larranaga's team went out, fully energized, and beat North Carolina by 26.

Larranaga has taken charge of what not long ago looked like a wayward Hurricane program ? leading Miami to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, a 27-6 record, a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament and quite possibly putting a school that hadn't been to the men's version of the Big Dance since 2008 in position to win a national title.

Miami plays Pacific (22-12) in Austin, Texas on Friday. So on Monday, other than consenting to about a dozen media interviews, Larranaga tried to rest.

"We've got to turn the page," Larranaga said Monday. "When non-conference season was over, we turned the page. Regular season over, turn the page. ACC tournament is over, turn the page. One does not have anything to do with the next. They're all separate events and we need our guys to get some rest, because it was a long, grueling tournament."

Larranaga and the Hurricanes made getting out of that ACC tournament look easy.

Not bad for a guy who, when he decided to pursue the Miami job two years ago, was absolutely convinced he had zero chance of being hired.

"He's a great teacher," Miami President Donna Shalala told The Associated Press. "When you get right down to it, in higher education, there are a handful of really great teachers. Sometimes they're in chemistry, sometimes they're in English, and sometimes they're the basketball coach.

"When we heard he wanted the job, I thought this was an opportunity of a lifetime for the University of Miami."

She might have been right.

At a time when the athletic department has been rocked by a scandal involving a former booster who prompted a long and still-unresolved NCAA investigation ? over things that occurred long before Larranaga arrived ? this men's basketball season has clearly been a ray of light in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes' arena was sold out for many games, bringing Shalala to tears at least once. A pair of ACC titles will be commemorated by banners. The team seems to be an in-vogue pick to win it all.

And whether he wants it or not, Larranaga ? a likely national coach of the year candidate ? is getting much of the credit.

That's why, when the bus carrying the ACC champions arrived back on campus Sunday night, outside the on-campus arena and practice facility that Miami built a few years apart, Larranaga was the first to exit and start giving hundreds of high-fives to delirious, screaming fans. Players waited about a minute before joining the celebration.

"That was his moment," said senior forward-center Kenny Kadji, who carried the trophy off the bus. "That was for him."

Best known for leading George Mason to the Final Four in 2006, Larranaga was a hire at Miami that raised some eyebrows after Frank Haith left for Missouri in 2011.

He arrived with the school very much in a transitional phase, with a change imminent in the athletic director's office, the news of the NCAA scandal about to hit and only a few months after Al Golden was hired to lead the football program. By the time Larranaga even registered a blip on Miami's potential-hire list, the Hurricanes had interviewed five other people and the consensus pick was that Frank Martin ? a Miami native ? would get the job.

Then Larranaga got a phone call, telling him that Martin would not be Miami's guy and urging him to fly to Boston and meet with Miami's hiring committee. Larranaga took the trip, believing Tommy Amaker would be the eventual Hurricanes coach. His interview lasted only an hour, cut short by the news that Miami had hired Shawn Eichorst as athletic director and that he would take over the lead role on the basketball search.

"I told my wife, I got a token interview," Larranaga said.

Eichorst and Larranaga eventually spoke briefly. Eight days passed before they spoke again ? when Eichorst offered the job.

"We're not perfect, but he brings the best out of everybody," Scott said. "He's the one that did it. He came here and told everybody their role, everybody plays their role and everybody's fine with it. When you're winning, everybody's happy."

With all his success, Larranaga has never lost sight of who he is and where he's from.

As a kid who spent 50 cents a day on the 10 Reese's peanut butter cups that served as his lunch, Larranaga played for the legendary Jack Curran at Archbishop Malloy High in New York. Curran died last week, just days before Miami began play in the ACC tournament. Even with a trip to the NCAAs looming ? accompanied by endless hours of preparation for an opponent he and his staff knew little about when the pairings were revealed ? Larranaga will fly to New York on Tuesday for the services for his mentor, then quickly return home without even interrupting the Hurricanes' practice schedule.

"He was like my best friend throughout my life," Larranaga said. "Losing him on Wednesday was very sad for me. But I said to him, 'I'm going to do everything I can to help my team win this ACC tournament in your honor.' And he helped me stay calm throughout the weekend."

It wasn't just that weekend. Players have noticed it all year.

"It was very important and it trickles throughout the team," senior Julian Gamble said. "He's our leader. Throughout the chaos, he stayed even-keeled and told us to keep having fun. You have to control the things you can control, and truth is, there are very few of them."

Some symmetry might be at play for Miami in this tournament. George Mason earned its Final Four ticket by winning two games at the Verizon Center in Washington. If the Hurricanes win two games in Austin, they'll be heading to that very same arena, with a chance to get Larranaga ? who still has plenty of friends and fans in that area ? back to the national semifinals.

Players speak about it openly: Naturally, they want the title, but when pressed to identify a top reason why they want to win, they say for Larranaga.

"Magical seasons don't happen very often," Shalala said. "The great thing about sports is you get the unexpected. You don't get that in many other professions because you sort of build up to it and see it coming. But in sports, on any given day, in any given year, something extraordinary can happen. And that's what happened at the University of Miami."

Boston University Upends Ohio State

BOSTON ? Senior Danielle Etrasco scored eight goals and added four assists and classmate Kristen Mogavero added six goals, as the Boston University women?s lacrosse team posted a 16-11 victory over No. 15 Ohio State, Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

BU improves to 2-3 on the year with its second victory over a ranked opponent this season. The Terriers also defeated then-No. 14/12 Massachusetts, 9-8, in overtime on Feb. 27.

Etrasco?s 12 points is a single-game school record, besting the previous record of nine, which was reached nine times in school history, and most recently by Etrasco against Binghamton last season.

Fellow senior Kristen Mogavero scored a career-high six goals while junior goalkeeper Christina Sheridan made a career-best 17 saves to lead the Terriers to victory.

BU also received goals from sophomore Lindsay Weiner and freshman Louisa Del Rio. Sophomore Jenna Boarman and junior Becca Church set career-highs with three assists apiece while junior Elizabeth Morse and Weiner also dished out helpers.

?

?

The Terriers held a 17-12 advantage in draw controls and a slim 17-16 edge in ground balls against the Buckeyes.
Mogavero gave BU an early 1-0 lead on the Terriers? first possession of the game but the Buckeyes knotted the game at 1-1 a few minutes later. Etrasco?s first tally of the day less than 30 seconds later put BU ahead, 2-1, with 24:45 to go in the first.

Ohio State evened the game at 2-2, but Etrasco won the ensuing draw control and fed Del Rio for the freshman?s first goal as a Terrier to give BU a lead. The Buckeyes knotted the score again before Etrasco?s second strike of the day gave the Terriers a 4-3 advantage.

The Buckeyes tied the game then took a 5-4 lead but Boarman fed Etrasco for her third straight goal to make it 5-5. Etrasco won the following draw control and found the back of the net unassisted and

Mogavero followed with her second tally of the game, with an assist from Etrasco, to put the Terriers up 7-5, with 13:56 remaining in the first.

Mogavero and Weiner scored the only other goals of the first period for the Terriers, as BU took a 9-5 lead into the break,

Ohio State opened the scoring in the second half with Mary Kate Facchina making it a 9-6 game but Etrasco and Mogavero followed with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to extend BU?s lead to 11-6 with 20:32 remaining on the clock.

The Buckeyes responded with two unanswered goals to cut the Terriers? lead to 11-8, but Etrasco again stepped up for BU by winning the draw control and taking the ball down the field herself to make it 13-8 in favor of the Terriers.

Etrasco wasn?t finished, as she found the back of the net again with an assist from Church to put BU ahead, 13-8, and force Ohio State to call a timeout with 12:04 to play. The stoppage did little to halt the Terriers, as Mogavero and Etrasco combined for the next three goals to stretch the Terriers? lead to 16-8 with 5:30 to go.

Ohio State ended the game with three unanswered goals but could not overcome its deficit, as BU went on to win, 16-11.

DNA study clarifies how polar bears and brown bears are related

Mar. 14, 2013 ? At the end of the last ice age, a population of polar bears was stranded by the receding ice on a few islands in southeastern Alaska. Male brown bears swam across to the islands from the Alaskan mainland and mated with female polar bears, eventually transforming the polar bear population into brown bears.

Evidence for this surprising scenario emerged from a new genetic study of polar bears and brown bears led by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The findings, published March 14 in PLOS Genetics, upend prevailing ideas about the evolutionary history of the two species, which are closely related and known to produce fertile hybrids.

Previous studies suggested that past hybridization had resulted in all polar bears having genes that came from brown bears. But the new study indicates that episodes of gene flow between the two species occurred only in isolated populations and did not affect the larger polar bear population, which remains free of brown bear genes.

At the center of the confusion is a population of brown bears that live on Alaska's Admiralty, Baranof, and Chicagof Islands, known as the ABC Islands. These bears--clearly brown bears in appearance and behavior--have striking genetic similarities to polar bears.

"This population of brown bears stood out as being really weird genetically, and there's been a long controversy about their relationship to polar bears. We can now explain it, and instead of the convoluted history some have proposed, it's a very simple story," said coauthor Beth Shapiro, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz.

Shapiro and her colleagues analyzed genome-wide DNA sequence data from seven polar bears, an ABC Islands brown bear, a mainland Alaskan brown bear, and a black bear. The study also included genetic data from other bears that was recently published by other researchers. Shapiro's team found that polar bears are a remarkably homogeneous species with no evidence of brown bear ancestry, whereas the ABC Islands brown bears show clear evidence of polar bear ancestry.

A key finding is that the polar bear ancestry of ABC Islands brown bears is conspicuously enriched in the maternally inherited X chromosome. About 6.5 percent of the X chromosomes of the ABC Islands bears came recently from polar bears, compared to about 1 percent of the rest of their genome. This means that the ABC Islands brown bears share more DNA with polar bear females than they do with polar bear males, Shapiro said.

To understand how hybridization could lead to this unexpected result, the team ran simulations of various demographic scenarios. "Of all the models we tested, the best supported was the scenario in which male brown bears wandered onto the islands and gradually transformed the population from polar bears into brown bears," said first author James Cahill, a graduate student in ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz.

This scenario is consistent with the known behavior of brown bears and polar bears, according to coauthor Ian Stirling, a biologist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Mixing of polar bears and brown bears is seen today in the Canadian Beaufort Sea, where adult male brown bears wander onto the remaining sea ice in late spring and sometimes mate with female polar bears, he said. In areas such as western Hudson Bay and the Russian coast, polar bears are spending more time on land in response to climate warming and loss of sea ice, a behavior that could have left polar bears stranded on the ABC Islands at the end of the last ice age.

Young male brown bears tend to leave the area where they were born in search of new territory. They may well have dispersed across the water from the Alaskan mainland to the ABC Islands and hybridized with polar bears stranded there when the sea ice disappeared.

"The combination of genetics and the known behavior of brown and polar bears hybridizing in the wild today tells us how the ABC Islands bears came to be: they are the descendants of many male brown bear immigrants and some female polar bears from long ago," Stirling said.

The findings suggest that continued climate warming and loss of arctic sea ice may lead to the same thing happening more broadly, said coauthor Richard E. (Ed) Green, an assistant professor of biomolecular engineering in UCSC's Baskin School of Engineering. "As the ice melts in the Arctic, what is going to happen to the polar bears? In the ABC Islands, the polar bears are gone. They're brown bears now, but with polar bear genes still present in their genomes," he said.

The first genetic studies of ABC Islands brown bears looked at their mitochondrial DNA, which is separate from the chromosomes and is inherited only through the female lineage. The mitochondrial DNA of ABC Islands brown bears matches that of polar bears more closely than that of other brown bears, which led some scientists to think that the ABC Islands brown bears gave rise to modern polar bears.

The new study looks at the "nuclear DNA" carried on the chromosomes in the cell nucleus. It is the latest in a series of genetic studies of polar bears published in recent years, each of which has prompted new ideas about the relationship between polar bears and brown bears. A 2010 study of fossils and mitochondrial DNA supported the idea that polar bears evolved from the ABC Islands brown bears. But a 2011 study of mitochondrial DNA from extinct Irish brown bears showed an even closer match to polar bears and suggested that polar bears got their mitochondrial DNA from hybridization with Irish bears. Shapiro, a coauthor of that study, said she now thinks the Irish brown bears may be another example of what happened in the ABC Islands, but she can't say for sure until she studies their nuclear DNA.

"In retrospect, I think we were wrong about the directionality of the gene flow between polar bears and Irish brown bears," she said.

Two studies published in 2012 sought to determine when the polar bear lineage diverged from the brown bear lineage using nuclear DNA data. The first, published in April in Science, put the split at 600,000 years ago and concluded that polar bears carry brown bear mitochondrial DNA due to past hybridizations. The second, published in July in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggested that brown bears, black bears, and polar bears diverged around 4 to 5 million years ago, followed by repeated episodes of hybridization between polar bears and brown bears.

The new study does not address the question of how long ago polar bears diverged from brown bears, but it may help sort out the conflicting results of recent studies. "It's a good step in the right direction of understanding what really happened," Shapiro said.

The study does indicate that the divergence of polar bears from brown bears was only half as long ago as the split between the brown bear and black bear lineages, said Cahill. "We can tell how long brown bears and polar bears have been separate species as a proportion of how long ago they separated from more distantly related species, but putting a year on it is very difficult," he said.

Green noted that efforts to understand the relationship between polar bears and brown bears has been complicated by the unusual case of the ABC Islands brown bears. "It's as if you were studying the relationship between humans and chimpanzees and your analysis included DNA from some weird population of humans that had hybridized with chimps. You would get very strange results until you figured that out," he said.

In addition to Cahill, Green, Shapiro, and Stirling, the coauthors of the new paper include postdoctoral researchers Tara Fulton and Mathias Stiller, undergraduate Rauf Salamzade, and graduate student John St. John at UC Santa Cruz; Flora Jay and Montgomery Slatkin at UC Berkeley; and Nikita Ovsyanikov at the Wrangel Island State Nature Reserve in Russia. Green and Shapiro direct the UCSC Paleogenomics Lab. This research was funded by the Searle Scholars Program.
