Romney picks up 2 delegates in South Carolina (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Mitt Romney has picked up a consolation prize from the South Carolina Republican presidential primary: two delegates.

Newt Gingrich handily won the Jan. 21 primary and got 23 of the state's 25 delegates. South Carolina Republicans awarded 11 delegates to the statewide winner and two delegates for winning each of the state's seven congressional districts.

Gingrich won six congressional districts, but the vote in one district was too close to call on election night. State party political director Alex Stroman said Monday the party had determined Romney won the district by about 1,400 votes.

Romney now has 35 delegates, including endorsements from Republican National Committee members who will automatically attend the convention. Gingrich has 25 and Rick Santorum has 14. It takes 1,144 delegates to win the nomination.

Rogers LTE coverage expands around Montreal

Rogers LTE coverage in Montreal

Rogers announced today that their LTE network currently sitting in the core of Montreal has now expanded to the outskirts, including areas like Laval, Terrebonne, Brossard, Longueuil, and Vaudreuil. One of the devices that will be sporting the high-speed data standard is the recently-announced Samsung Galaxy Note, but Rogers also has the LTE Galaxy S II, HTC Raider, and HTC Jetstream

LTE coverage in Canada is still relatively new, having only launched in Montreal at the end of September. Providing solid service to major centres in Quebec is particularly important because the nimble competition, Wind Mobile and Mobilicity, have yet to set up shop in la belle province. There's still Public Mobile, a discount brand which just recently made the leap from feature phones to smartphones, and the extremely well-established Videotron in Quebec.

Rogers aims to give half the Canadian population access to LTE by the end of the year by expanding to another 25 cities. While a noble goal, the real problem with building out wireless networks in Canada is geographic coverage. If you haven't noticed, there's a lot of land up here, and since most Canadians are huddled together in relatively tiny, concentrated pockets, those in more remote areas tend to be left in the cold when it comes to upgrades such as LTE. Rogers won't completely ignore HSPA+ expansion into those fringes, but I do worry it'll slow down with LTE demanding their attention.

To keep up to date on the progress of Rogers LTE, keep an eye on their minisite.

SAG Awards 2012: John Cryer Talks Ashton Kutcher Vs. Charlie Sheen On 'Two And A Half Men' (VIDEO)

"Two And A Half Men" star John Cryer definitely feels a difference on set since Ashton Kutcher replaced the hit sitcom's former star Charlie Sheen.

On the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, he told E! that Kutcher is "great. He's a clown. He is up for anything, willing to do anything... a great, great spirit."

When E! host Giulianna Rancic asked if things felt differently on set in this post-Sheen era, Cryer -- who was nominated for his first SAG award -- took a bit of a jab at his former co-star. "It's a little less suspenseful being on the set nowadays," he said with a laugh. "When you come into work, you're pretty sure [Kutcher's] going to be there. And nobody's pushed his car off a cliff or anything like that"

As for Sheen, who is currently working on his FX series "Anger Management," Cryer said, "I haven't spoken with him though. I wish him well. He's got a good team around him and I can't imagine he's not going to put out a good show."

What we worry about when we worry about Greek debt (AP)

NEW YORK ? Remember Greece?

It's been two years since a financial crisis erupted in the birthplace of drama, and the final act is still unfinished. A second week of talks in Athens ended Friday with no deal between the country, the European Union and private holders of Greek bonds.

Remarkably, even after the crisis became such an international worry last year that the leaders of France and Germany were actually referred to as "Merkozy," the European debt bomb could still explode, with Greece as the fuse.

Economists and investors see a Greek default as the biggest test of the world financial system since the crisis that followed the collapse of Lehman Brothers investment house in 2008.

It is also the biggest threat to what has been a successful start to the year in the U.S. stock market. The Standard & Poor's 500 index has gained 4.7 percent, roughly half its average for a full year, in just four weeks.

"If talks break down next week and it looks like they can't reach a deal, it raises all sorts of risks," says Jeffrey Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial. "The stock market could probably lose half its gains for the year."

On paper, it's hard to see how Greece could take down financial markets in the U.S., the world's biggest economy, with $15.2 trillion in goods and services churned out every year.

Consider:

? Greece's economy weighs in at euro220 billion, according to the International Monetary Fund's estimates. That translates to $285 billion, which puts Greece's economy on par with Maryland's. The U.S. sells about $1.6 billion in weapons, medicine and other products to Greece each year, a minuscule 0.07 percent of exports.

? U.S. banks say Greece on its own poses no danger to them. Unlike European banks, they're not major lenders to Greek businesses and aren't saddled with Greek government debt. In its most recent report, JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the U.S., said it had just $4.5 billion at risk in Greece, Ireland and Portugal combined. That's about what the bank makes in revenue in two and a half weeks.

? Many worry that U.S. banks would struggle to cover the insurance contracts they sold on Greece's euro350 billion, or about $460 billion, in government debt. But the amount of insurance taken out on that debt totals $68 billion, according to the clearinghouse for the contracts. That's hardly enough to pull down the banking system. And the banks have offset all but $3.2 billion of those contracts with other contracts. In other words, pocket change.

"The direct impact of a Greek default is almost zero," Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, told CNBC on Thursday.

So what's everybody ? well, everybody but Jamie Dimon ? worried about?

A breakdown in talks could trigger steep losses in stock markets in Europe and the U.S. Just as in 2008, banks could stop lending to each other, and the credit freeze could cause a market panic.

More importantly overseas, it could cause borrowing rates for Portugal and Italy to jump, pushing those much larger countries closer to defaults of their own.

That's only the beginning. A Greek default could unleash a host of larger problems. Some are already anticipated while others are likely to blindside even the closest observers, says Nick Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group. "In any complex system, you're going to have unintended consequences," he says.

He compares it to the collapse of Lehman Brothers: Analysts saw it coming, but the fallout in still caught them by surprise. A money market mutual fund found that it couldn't redeem its customers' money. Money market funds, which many considered as safe as savings accounts, suddenly looked suspect until the Federal Reserve backed them up.

At a conference on sovereign debt this week in New York, Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University, predicted that even commodity prices would plunge in response to a messy Greek default.

If Greece goes under, traders seeking safety would immediately sell euros and buy dollars, Hanke said. The dollar would soar and prices for commodities like oil and wheat, which are bought and sold in dollars around the world, would collapse. A single dollar would buy much more oil or wheat.

"If the bomb is set off by Greece, commodity prices will collapse," Hanke said.

Hanke, who has advised governments around the world on managing their currencies, argued that Greece appears bound to collapse under its debts as its economy shrinks. "Greece is doomed," he said.

So investors will be watching what happens this week in Athens. At the sovereign debt conference, Hans Humes, president of Greylock Capital Management, said this week could bring "the precedent-setting moment." He warned that if the banks and investment funds that hold Greek bonds take steep losses, then Portugal, Italy and other countries shouldering heavy debt burdens can be expected to follow Greece's lead.

It's comparable to a messy default. Traders will respond by immediately selling government bonds from those countries, Humes said. Borrowing costs will rise, and Europe's debt crisis will turn much worse.

Humes has been involved in the negotiations on the side of creditors holding Greek bonds so he has a stake in the game. But it's a scenario other money managers often cite.

"There's a fear that other countries won't negotiate at all. They'll just say, `We'll pay you back at 50 percent or maybe less," Kleintop says.

To Colas, the deepest concern isn't how the S&P 500 reacts or whether the dollar rises if Greece drops the European currency. It's the possibility for panic, especially a run on European banks.

What if people across France and Germany crowd into banks to pull their deposits? Banks, after all, are some of the largest buyers of government debt.

"Human emotions can drive things off the rails," Colas says.

Greg Kelly Accuser Alleges: I Aborted Anchor's Baby

A new twist has emerged in the accusation of rape against Good Day New York anchor Greg Kelly:

According to The New York Post, the woman who went to the police on Tuesday and reported an October incident where Kelly sexually assaulted her also told the cops that the alleged rape resulted in a pregnancy. She said she later aborted the fetus.

Greg Kelly on Fox

Due to the internal conflict within the NYPD - Kelly is the son of Commissioner Raymond Kelly - the Manhattan District Attorney has been placed in charge of this investigation, with Kelly's lawyer expressing confidence that office will "prove Mr. Kelly’s innocence.”

The accuser is reported to be in her late 20s or early 30s and claims Kelly and her went back to the law office in which she works (though not as an attorney) on October 8, following drinks at South Street Seaport. That is where the alleged assault took place.

Sources say the two communicated after the incident took place, with some speculating it was due to the pregnancy.

A friend of the woman tells ABC News that the alleged victim has been “an emotional cripple” since the night in question.

Marshall football: Curry prepares for bowl, future in NFL

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Vinny Curry lugged his Marshall helmet and green pants to Mobile, Ala., where he has competed this week under the intense scrutiny of football talent evaluators in advance of Saturday's Senior Bowl.

Curry, who measured at 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds, has been judged on everything from his burst to his leverage by National Football League scouts.

The media has opined on his draft potential, but the former Herd pass rusher hasn't had the time to peruse the Internet and skim the write-ups and reports.

He isn't oblivious, though.

"All I know is what people send me on Twitter or text message me," Curry said in a phone interview from his hotel room Wednesday night. "When I hear good things, it's like a breath of fresh air. I'm just relieved."

Curry is wearing that familiar No. 99 while playing defensive end for the North team. He is being used on all special teams, too.

The North versus South contest will be played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium and will be televised live on the NFL Network at 4 p.m. Saturday.

"Every play, every down is a job interview," Curry said. "Everybody we go against is good. It's the best all of the time. This is basically like the Pro Bowl for college players."

NFL scouts flock to practices to scribble notes about the prospects that are on display.

Curry met with general managers, coaches and scouts after practices, and media reports became more glowing as the week progressed. ?

Here is what some observers are saying about the former Marshall star: ?

  • Vic Ketchman, packers.com editor - "A day after leaping to prominence by darting into the backfield and forcing a fumble, the undersized pass rusher was the star of the day in the North squad's practice for Saturday's Senior Bowl game. Following the morning session, Curry was surrounded by scouts seeking personal information.
  • "He was quick, elusive, forceful and disruptive. He looked every part of a playmaker. Curry was the best of the tweeners in a Senior Bowl that is loaded with tweeners on both teams' rosters."

  • New York Times NFL Blog - "Curry showed his quick burst off the edge and ability to penetrate against the run against top competition. There are still blemishes in his game, but he'll have many teams taking a second look at his tape."
  • Mike Mayock, NFL Network - "I like Vinny Curry. He plays with a great motor, great leverage. He gets up the field. He's quick. I think he's probably a second-round pick."
  • A Mock Draft by The Sporting News had Curry selected by the New England Patriots with the final pick of the first round.

"I don't have a preference," the Neptune, N.J. native said.

Curry finished with 77 tackles (22 for a loss), 11 sacks and seven forced fumbles as a senior. His 49 career tackles for a loss is the seventh-most in Marshall history and his 26.5 sacks are fourth best all-time at MU.

Curry signed with Kevin Conner, who is CEO and President of University Sports Entertainment and Management. The agency is located in Atlanta, where Curry worked out prior to arriving at the Senior Bowl.

His daily All-Star game activities include a morning meeting, 9:30 a.m. practice, an afternoon meeting and then a series of conversations with representatives from NFL teams.

Curry is one of 14 players on the North roster (and 24 in the game) from non-BCS leagues.

He is the fifth Marshall player to participate in the Senior Bowl, joining John Wade, Chad Pennington, Steve Sciullo and Lee Smith.

Curry noticed three Marshall fans during Wednesday's workouts, which he appreciated.

"I'm just trying to be the same guy I was at Marshall," Curry said. "The same Vinny with a smile on his face. Trying to make plays and make people proud."

Kids' health predicts parents' future heart disease (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Parents of children suffering from high cholesterol or blood pressure have been found to have a higher incidence of heart disease and diabetes later on, a U.S. study said,

Screening children is important, not only for themselves, but for the clues it may yield to the health of parents who may not always go for check-ups themselves, said the researchers, whose study was published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

Researchers found that a 12-year-old's weight, cholesterol and blood pressure helped predict the odds of a parent developing heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes over the next three decades.

"Pediatric risk factors -- cholesterol, triglycerides, high blood pressure -- identified families where parents were at increased risk," said Charles Glueck of Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati, one of the researchers.

It's estimated that about 15 to 20 out of every 300 U.S. children may have high cholesterol that's related to diet and lifestyle.

The study included 852 school students who, at an average age of 12, had their cholesterol, blood pressure, triglycerides and weight measured. They were re-assessed 26 years later, as were their parents, who were then 66 years old, on average.

In nearly half the families, or 47 percent, a parent had suffered a heart attack, stroke or needed a procedure to clear blocked heart arteries by the end of the study. In 37 percent, a parent had developed diabetes.

Overall, Glueck's team found, parents were about twice as likely to suffer early heart disease or stroke, at age 60 or younger, when their child had had high blood pressure at age 12.

Parents' odds of cardiovascular problems at any age were also higher when their child had had high levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol, or triglycerides.

When children were overweight, their parents' odds of developing diabetes or high blood pressure doubled.

In an earlier study, Glueck's team found that childhood test results also predicted the children's own risks of developing heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure by their late 30s.

Last November, the U.S. National Institutes of Health issued new guidelines saying children should have their cholesterol measured between the ages of 9 and 11, and again between the ages of 17 and 21. The American Academy of Pediatrics also endorsed the recommendation.

But the effectiveness of these recommendations remains under debate, with some experts saying that there's no hard evidence that the screenings help children's heart health in the long run. Such mass screenings would also be expensive.

Glueck acknowledged the debate but said he felt the current study, plus another recent analysis of the same group of people, provided some needed information.

"If you know children's risk factors, what does that tell you? It tells you a lot," he added. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/xAS18e

New York police officer pleads guilty in civil rights case (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A New York City police officer pleaded guilty on Tuesday to federal charges that he violated an African-American man's civil rights by arresting him on false charges.

Michael Daragjati, an eight-year veteran of the New York Police Department, was later heard using a racial slur to brag about the arrest by investigators who were recording him.

In entering a guilty plea to the civil rights violation, Daragjati, who had been suspended without pay, was fired from the force, authorities said.

As part of his plea deal, he agreed not to oppose his termination and agreed never to seek work in law enforcement again. He faces a potential sentence of a year in jail and a $100,000 fine; a sentencing hearing has not been set.

Daragjati stopped and frisked the man in New York City's Staten Island borough in April, and the man complained about his treatment after he was found not to be carrying any weapons or contraband, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Brooklyn.

Daragjati responded by arresting him and filing a report falsely claiming the man resisted arrest by flailing his arms and kicking, the complaint said.

Investigators from the FBI and the police department's internal affairs bureau intercepted telephone calls in which they said Daragjati boasted about the arrest and made repeated derogatory references to African-Americans.

Don Fischetti, one of Daragjati's attorneys, said after Tuesday's hearing that one particular racial slur was "a vile statement that he regrets."

"The reason why he pleaded guilty today is he because he wants to put this matter behind him," Fischetti said, adding that Daragjati, 32, has a wife and three children.

Loretta Lynch, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement that Daragjati "criminally abused the immense authority and public trust conferred on him by his status as a police officer."

"Hiding behind his badge, he subjected his victims to false arrest, imprisonment and threats of violence," she said.

Daragjati also pleaded guilty to unrelated charges that he attempted to violently extort snowplow equipment from a man he believed had stolen from him. He faces a potential sentence of 20 years for the extortion charges.

New Zealand whale stranding kills 36, threatens 40 (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? A mass-stranding of whales on a New Zealand beach has left 36 of the creatures dead and threatens 40 more.

Department of Conservation area manager John Mason said 99 pilot whales stranded themselves Monday on Farewell Spit on the South Island. By Tuesday, 36 whales had died and another 40 remained stranded and were still in danger.

Mason said conservation staff and volunteers had successfully refloated 17 whales, which had swum out to deeper water. Another six whales remained unaccounted for.

The 40 beached whales were briefly swimming in shallow water early Tuesday afternoon but became stranded again by the evening as the tide went out. Mason said volunteers would try to keep the whales cool and wet until dark. He said after that, all they could hope for was that the whales would swim away on the next high tide during the night.

Pilot whales grow to about 20 feet (6 meters) and regularly strand themselves in large numbers during the New Zealand summer months.

Experts describe Farewell Spit as a whale trap due to the way its shallow waters seem to confuse whales and diminish their ability to navigate.

Patterns of chromosome abnormality: The key to cancer?

    Monday, January 23, 2012

A healthy genome is characterized by 23 pairs of chromosomes, and even a small change in this structure ? such as an extra copy of a single chromosome ? can lead to severe physical impairment. So it's no surprise that when it comes to cancer, chromosomal structure is frequently a contributing factor, says Prof. Ron Shamir of the Blavatnik School of Computer Science at Tel Aviv University.

Now Prof. Shamir and his former doctoral students Michal Ozery-Flato and Chaim Linhart, along with fellow researchers Prof. Shai Izraeli and Dr. Luba Trakhtenbrot from the Sheba Medical Center, have combined techniques from computer science and statistics to discover that many chromosomal pairs are lost or gained together across various cancer types. Moreover, the researchers discovered a new commonality of chromosomal aberrations among embryonic cancer types, such as kidney, skeleton, and liver cancers.

These findings, recently published in Genome Biology, could reveal more about the nature of cancer. As cancer develops, the genome becomes increasingly mutated ? and identifying the pattern of mutation can help us to understand the nature and the progression of many different kinds of cancer, says Prof. Shamir.

    Looking at the big picture

As cancer progresses, the structure of chromosomes is rearranged, individual chromosomes are duplicated or lost, and the genome becomes abnormal. Some forms of cancer can even be diagnosed by identifying individual chromosomal aberrations, notes Prof. Shamir, pointing to the example of a specific type of leukemia that is caused by small piece of chromosome 9 being moved to chromosome 22.

When analyzing many different kinds of cancer, however, the researchers discovered that chromosomal aberrations among different cancers happen together in a noticeable and significant way. The researchers studied a collection of more than fifty thousand cancer karyotypes ? representations of chromosomal layouts in a single cell ? and charted them according to commonalities. The researchers were not only able to confirm different chromosomal aberrations that appeared in specific cancer types, but also for the first time identified a broader effect of pairs of chromosomes being lost or gained together across different cancer types.

It was also the first time that researchers saw a connection among solid kidney, skeleton, and liver cancers. While it was known that these cancers all develop in the embryo, they were previously analyzed independently. The TAU researchers have now confirmed that they share chromosomal characteristics and aberrations, much like various forms of leukemia or lymphomas.

Aberrations a driving force for cancer

Under normal circumstances, even a small change to a person's chromosomal structure can be devastating. For example, Down's syndrome is caused by a single extra copy of Chromosome 21. "But in cancer, there are many cases of extra or missing chromosomes. Yet cancer cells thrive more effectively than other cells," Prof. Shamir says.

Prof. Shamir hopes that future investigation into these chromosomal aberrations will give researchers more clues into why something that is so detrimental to our healthy development is so beneficial to this disease. Cancer is the result of sequences of events, he says, each causing the genome to become more mutated, mixed, and duplicated. Tracking these changes could aid our understanding of the driving forces of cancer's progress.

WWE responds to Conn. Senate candidate's criticism (AP)

STAMFORD, Conn. ? WWE professional wrestling is accusing Connecticut Senate candidate Chris Shays of making untrue accusations about the company once run by Linda McMahon, a fellow Republican vying for the party's nomination.

Shays told The Associated Press recently that McMahon was "basically in the soft-core porn business."

WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman released a letter to Shays on Monday, saying the former congressman visited the company's headquarters and supported its SmackDown Your Vote campaign, which encouraged young people to register.

Zimmerman also cited WWE's efforts to combat bullying, contrary to Shays' claims WWE promotes bullying.

Shays spokeswoman Amanda Bergen says books and articles have been written about WWE and "the facts are the facts." Bergen says McMahon can't talk about her business experience without talking about her business.

(AP) ? Yemen's president left his battered nation on Sunday, his spokesman said, after delivering a farewell speech in which he asked for forgiveness and said it was time to hand over power.

But in a sign that Ali Abdullah Saleh's role as a power broker in Yemeni affairs may be far from over, he said he would seek medical care in the United States, then return to Yemen before presidential elections next month to head his ruling party.

A senior Obama administration official says Yemen's outgoing leader has been cleared to come to the U.S. for a limited time for medical treatment. The official, was not authorized to discuss details and spoke on condition of anonymity, did not say when Saleh would arrive. Saleh requested a visa so he could travel to the U.S. last month.

Despite singing a deal last year to pass powers to his vice president, Saleh has continued to exercise authority behind the scenes, sparking accusations he sought to cling to power. Meanwhile, al-Qaida has taken advantage Yemen's political instability to enlarge its foothold in the Arab world's poorest nation.

Presidential spokesman Ahmed al-Soufi told The Associated Press that Saleh left Yemen's capital Sanaa late Sunday on a jet headed for the Persian Gulf sultanate of Oman. He did not say how long Saleh intended to remain in Oman, but added that he would make "another stop before heading to the United States of America."

Saleh's departure could help push forward a U.S.-backed deal brokered by Yemen's powerful Persian Gulf neighbors that seeks to end the country's political crisis, which began nearly a year ago with mass protests inspired by uprisings elsewhere in the Arab world.

In the deal, Saleh agreed to pass power to his deputy in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi is to be rubber-stamped as the country's new leader in presidential elections on Feb. 21 in which he is expected to be the only candidate.

Saleh said in a farewell speech before his departure Sunday that he planned to travel to the United States for treatment for wounds sustained during a bomb blast in his palace mosque earlier this year, according to the official Yemeni news agency. He also was quoted as saying he intended to return to Yemen before presidential elections on Feb. 21 to head his ruling party.

The Obama administration has long seen getting Saleh out of Yemen as an important step toward ensuring that elections take place in February.

Some in the administration have raised concerns that allowing Saleh into the U.S. would spark criticisms in the Arab world that the U.S. is harboring an autocrat responsible for deadly crackdowns on protesters. To protect against this, the administration has sought assurances from Saleh that he would not seek to remain in the U.S.

The president, who has ruled for more than 33 years, left the country earlier in the uprising for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment after the mosque attack. He made a surprise return to Yemen a few months later.

For nearly a year, Yemenis have been taking to the streets in great numbers to call for the end of Saleh's rule, often facing deadly crackdowns from Saleh's security forces.

Protesters and human rights groups reject the deal and criticize the immunity clause, saying Saleh should stand trial for his alleged role in protester deaths.

Jets owner backs Sanchez, doesn't rule out Manning (AP)

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? Mark Sanchez is still the New York Jets' quarterback of the future.

    Well, at least for now.

Owner Woody Johnson supported his embattled quarterback while meeting with writers who regularly cover the team Thursday for the first time since the Jets finished 8-8 and failed to make the playoffs.

But, he also wouldn't rule out the possibility of pursuing a veteran such as Peyton Manning if the Indianapolis Colts star became available.

"I'm not going to ever tell you guys what we may or may not do," Johnson said in a 30-minute far-ranging interview.

"Our job, and my job for the fans, is to take this team to the very top level, and I've said that from the beginning. And I have a lot of confidence that we can do it. So, we're going to look at everything. We're going to look at every possibility, and that's what you'd want us to do."

Johnson said "there's no such thing as 100 percent" when asked if Sanchez would definitely be the starter next season.

    "Barring whatever," he said, "yes."

That "whatever" could be the status of Manning, who missed the season after a few operations on his neck.

He's still a highly unlikely possibility for Rex Ryan's Jets since he's still under contract to the Colts, is 10 years older than the 25-year-old Sanchez and would be a tough fit financially for New York.

But the fact Johnson didn't completely slam the door on the idea of Manning joining his brother Eli as quarterbacks in New York could keep the rumor mill spinning in the offseason. Johnson did sound later as though the franchise is thinking about Sanchez for the long term.

"With Mark, you have a 25-year-old quarterback that you can develop," he said. "You can have a quarterback for 10 years with a guy like this. These guys are not available everyday.

"We have a lot of confidence in Mark. We think he's our guy. We're blessed that we have a guy that we feel can climb the ladder and he can do everything. He's got the work ethic and has all the ingredients in place to be a great quarterback."

Johnson indicated that new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano taking the reins from the departed Brian Schottenheimer could help Sanchez. Sparano, hired last week, said he wanted the offense to be "explosive," but also wanted a focus on running the ball ? as the Jets did in Sanchez's first two seasons.

"My feeling is that Mark is the kind of guy that will learn from this and get better," Johnson said. "We are going to try to make the offense maybe a little bit more suitable to what Mark's development is."

He added that the blame shouldn't be placed all on Sanchez, despite his lousy finish, but agreed that he might need a backup who could help challenge him.

"He's got to have somebody breathing on his back, yeah, I think you could argue that," Johnson said.

Johnson also is "concerned but I'm confident" that the fractured relationship between Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes can be mended.

Holmes was highly critical of the offensive line during the season and clearly had some tension with his quarterback.

It all came to a head in the season finale at Miami when Holmes was benched late in the game after arguing with teammates in the huddle.

"They've won a lot of games together and one is good for the other," Johnson said. "Santonio makes the quarterback a lot better and vice versa. So they have a good reason to iron this thing out and I think they can do it."

Johnson acknowledged that he might sit down with the two, either individually or together, at some point. While he added that Holmes will definitely be back, the Jets are tied to Holmes financially after they gave him a five-year, $45 million deal last offseason ? something the owner doesn't regret.

"He may be one of the best players we've ever had here," said Johnson said, who added that he was troubled by the perception that Holmes quit on the team as the season ended.

"I have a good relationship with Santonio," Johnson said. "He's going to have a fresh start this year and I think he'll take advantage of it. He knows it's important to him, it's important to us."

Johnson also disputed LaDainian Tomlinson's claim on Showtime's "Inside The NFL" that the Jets had the worst locker room tension he has ever seen, saying the running back might have overstated things.

"I didn't feel a toxicity in the locker room," Johnson said, adding that he'll talk to Tomlinson to clarify his statements.

"I hear what LaDainian (is saying). I respect LaDainian at the highest level, but I don't think the whole locker room was toxic. I think there were clearly a few players that had conflicts. ... Would you love to have total harmony? Maybe. But maybe it's good to have a little bit of disharmony also. But they have to care about each other."

Ryan has said that he felt he never really had the pulse of the locker room, and many ? including Tomlinson ? think the coach's brash approach, along with general manager Mike Tannenbaum, set the tone for what took place. Johnson supported the aggressive style, saying it is more of a positive when building a team.

"The great thing about Rex as opposed to people not like Rex, is that he has a very healthy ego," Johnson added. "It's very healthy. He realizes that being a great coach requires admitting mistakes perhaps or changing or altering his style or management style or learning that we don't all grow up being great managers at age 40 whatever he is. Sometimes, it takes you a little longer and in most cases it does to be a good manager."

Johnson has spoken to Ryan about how the season unfolded, and believes the coach will keep improving.

"I think he realizes that he is the head coach," Johnson said. "He's a savant defensive guy, but he is a head coach. He has responsibility for the whole room and I think he will be a lot more involved and take a bit of a different management approach to that, I would suspect. Not because I told him to, but because I think he has figured this out."

Oil price drifts lower, stays above $100 a barrel

The price of benchmark U.S. oil ended a little lower on Thursday following a series of economic reports that pointed to an improving U.S. economy.

Jobless claims fell, consumer prices were steady and the dismal home construction market showed more signs of life at the end of 2011.

A stronger economy means demand for energy products should improve. However analysts say oil prices will continue to swing between gains and losses until there is more certainty about the direction of the global economy.

Benchmark oil fell 20 cents to finish at $100.39 per barrel in New York on Thursday. It was as high as $102.06 earlier in the day. Brent crude, which is used to price many varieties of foreign crude sent to U.S. refineries, rose 89 cents to end at $111.55 per barrel in London.

The Labor Department said the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level since April 2008. The drop is more evidence of a strengthening job market. A department spokesman said that the number can be volatile this time of year because it reflects temporary hires in the holiday season.

The government also reported that consumer prices were unchanged last month, as the inflation rate remains at a low.

Builders began construction on nearly 607,000 homes last year. That is about half of what economists say is needed for a healthy market. The numbers rose over the course of 2011, raising expectations that the collapse of the housing industry has at last hit bottom.

The Energy Department said Thursday that the nation's crude oil supplies declined about 1 percent last week. Gasoline supplies rose 1.7 percent and demand over the past four weeks is down 6.1 percent from a year ago.

Worries about Europe's debt crisis and future energy demand receded as France and Spain staged successful bond auctions, indicating that investors have not been scared off by S&P's recent downgrades of eurozone countries.

Gas pump prices in the U.S. are at the highest level they've ever been for this time of year. The national average remained at $3.38 a gallon on Thursday, according to AAA, Wright Express and OPIS. That's about 17 cents more than a month ago and 27 cents more than a year ago.

Fred Rozell, retail pricing director at Oil Price Information Service, expects gasoline prices to be around $4 a gallon by spring.

Natural gas prices dropped again on Thursday, after the Energy Department said the nation's supplies fell last week but remained nearly 21 percent above the five-year average. Consumers, utilities and businesses are using less natural gas this winter because of persistent above-average temperatures across much of the nation. Natural gas futures fell 15 cents, or 6.1 percent, to finish at $2.32 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Heating oil rose 2 cents to end at $3.04 per gallon and gasoline futures fell 1 cent to end at $2.82 per gallon.

Turkey: Tens of thousands mark journalist's death (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Tens of thousands of protesters marked the fifth anniversary of a Turkish-Armenian journalist's murder on Thursday as outrage continues to grow over a trial that failed to shed light on alleged official negligence or even collusion.

Human rights activists placed red carnations on the spot in Istanbul where Hrant Dink was gunned down in broad daylight outside of his minority Agos newspaper office by a nationalist teenage gunman.

The case highlights Turkey's uneasy relationship with its ethnic and religious minorities, including at least 60,000 Armenian Christians. Many people carried black banners that read: "We are all Hrant, we are all Armenian," and some chanted "Turkey will be a grave for fascism."

Tens of thousands marched for justice, a call shared by Turkish leaders and leading businessmen who expressed unease over this week's sentencing of one man, Yasin Hayal, to life in prison for masterminding the killing, while another 17 were acquitted of charges of acting under a terrorist organization's orders. The court neglected to issue a verdict about a 19th suspect.

"The verdict is tragic and is weighing heavily on the conscience of everyone in Turkey," Rober Koptas, Dink's son-in-law and editor-in-chief of Agos, told AP television in an interview.

The gunman, Ogun Samast, was sentenced to nearly 23 years in prison in July by a separate juvenile court.

Umit Boyner, the head of Turkey's influential industrialists' association TUSIAD, said the court's decision had "shocked" the public.

"What we solidly see in this trial process is that the belief in justice has been shaken and weaknesses in our justice system have been revealed," he said.

Turkey's leaders have vowed a thorough investigation into Dink's killing ? signaling dissatisfaction with Tuesday's court ruling by a panel of judges.

Dink's lawyers have said they will appeal the verdict, saying the investigation was flawed because the judiciary had not followed up on evidence alleging officials may have been aware of the plot.

Protesters marching past the site of the Jan. 19, 2007 killing carried banners that read: "This case cannot finish like this." A black marble plaque marking the spot bore the solemn words in Turkish and Armenian: "Hrant Dink was killed here."

President Abdullah Gul said the case amounted to a tough test for Turkey, a democracy with a mostly Muslim population that seeks membership in the European Union.

"The conclusion of this case in a transparent and just manner in line with our laws is an important test for us," Gul said on Thursday.

Koptas responded that politicians were feeling guilty because they had done nothing in five years to ensure justice.

"If Hrant Dink was a test, Turkey failed, the ruling party failed," he said."If candid steps are taken in the future (to rectify the verdict), Turkey's image can be repaired but I'm not very hopeful."

Rustem Eryilmaz ? who led the panel of judges ? sparked even more fury when he told the daily Vatan in an interview published Thursday that he was not satisfied with the decision, acknowledging that the court had failed to reveal allegations of negligence or collusion between the state and the suspects.

"We could not shed light on what was going on behind the scenes, which is what everyone is curious about," Eryilmaz said. "There must be instigators ... but there is a need for evidence to accept the existence of such from a legal perspective."

Eryilmaz said the judges felt pressure to issue a verdict after the 4-1/2 year trial, and did not have time to examine thousands of telephone conversations at the scene on the day of the assassination.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said Eryilmaz's remarks were unacceptable and questioned why and how the court had neglected to issue its verdict on the 19th suspect.

"The assumption that only one person was responsible for this incident has damaged the public conscience," Arinc said Thursday.

Dink had sought to encourage reconciliation between Turkey and Armenia, but several years before his death he was prosecuted under Turkish law for describing the early 20th-century mass killings of Armenians as genocide.

Historians estimate up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I, an event widely viewed by genocide scholars as the first genocide of the 20th century.

Turkey, however, denies the deaths constituted genocide, saying that the toll has been inflated and that those killed were victims of civil war and unrest.

Iran to hold new naval exercises (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's Revolutionary Guards will hold new naval exercises in the strategic Strait of Hormuz in February, the semiofficial Fars news agency reported.

The late Thursday announcement came only two days after Iran's navy wrapped up another set of war games near the strait, the passageway for about a third of the world's oil tanker traffic.

Tehran's periodic naval maneuvers fall under close international scrutiny, as some Iranian officials have threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz should the West strike the country's nuclear facilities or embargo oil exports.

The report quoted the Guard's naval commander Adm. Ali Fadavi as saying that the latest exercise would be the seventh staging of an annual drill dubbed "The Great Prophet."

However, Fadavi said that this year's war games would be "different" from their predecessors. He did not elaborate.

The admiral said the drill would be held in the Iranian month of Bahman, which roughly corresponds to February.

The Guards, Iran's most powerful military unit, have the same air, naval and ground branches as the regular armed forces. They are also in charge of Iran's missile program.

Iran's regular navy on Tuesday ended a 10-day drill in the waters off the Strait, dubbed "Velayat 90."

Military officers said that Iran held the maneuvers to show off its prowess and defense capabilities. The country regularly holds war games and has also been active in fighting piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

The drill however was also the latest in a series of Iranian shows of strength as international criticism mounts over Tehran's controversial nuclear program. The West fears the program is aimed at developing atomic weapons, while Iran denies those charges, insisting that it is for peaceful purposes only.

The U.S. has recently tightened sanctions on Iran, and has not ruled out a military strike against nuclear facilities.
