Businesses that fail to support team working risk drop in productivity

By On-Rec at 30 January, 2013, 9:46 am

  • 37% of UK workers prefer working on their own to being part of a team
  • 47% say their organisation does not help them develop good team working practices
  • 33% have regularly dreaded coming into work as the result of a bad team environment
    ?

Nearly half (47%) of UK employees feel that their organisation does not help them to develop good team working practices, according to new research released today (30 January 2013) by coaching, leadership and talent development experts, Cedar.?

In addition, more than a third (37%) of UK employees prefer to work on their own, suggesting that many business cultures do not encourage employees to communicate ideas, share responsibility and trust fellow team members.

Despite the importance of employees understanding how their own work contributes to team targets, one in five respondents (22%) said they had never been in a meeting at which team performance was discussed.

Penny de Valk, chief executive of Cedar, said: ?We know that high performing organisations have high performing teams, and so businesses should look at ways of developing better, more productive team working within their organisations. A lack of adequate training and support for effective team working has a potentially damaging knock-on effect on business productivity.?

?We were concerned by research results that suggested UK employees do not feel well supported by team mates, with 54% saying their biggest timewaster was sloppy work that needed re-doing. For teams to work efficiently and happily together, every person must be equipped and motivated to pull their weight.?

The results also suggest that there is room for improvement in the skills of team leaders. 42% of respondents highlighted ?having a team leader who does not assist in resolving conflicts? as having a damaging effect on team performance.?? A further 42% indicated a lack of trust between team members as a key detrimental factor.?

Difficult inter-personal relationships within teams had a marked impact on productivity, with a third (33%) of respondents having regularly dreaded coming into work as the result of a bad team environment, whilst a further 29% said they couldn?t do their job properly.

Penny de Valk continued: ?Team Leaders play a vital role in delivering organisational performance, while their style and effectiveness has an impact on their team?s ability to deliver successfully.? It is a difficult role and people should be supported to develop the right skills and techniques to ensure they are able to get the most out of their teams.

?This requires a savvy, influential leadership style to get all members of the team focussed on team goals, as well as awareness of their position as a role model. Team leaders need to ensure that their staff have a clear understanding of their own responsibilities, and an overview of how these fit into the bigger picture in terms of team goals.? Regular meetings to discuss team performance, alongside opportunities to socialise as a team, create the right atmosphere for team productivity.?

More contenders for the great Super Bowl adfest ? Taco Bell and Hyundai Canada

Bookmark and Share

Here we go: Deutsch LA have been busy bees; producing VW?s Jamaican-themed opus for the Super Bowl on Sunday and also this one for Taco Bell showing a bunch of senior citizens partying at the popular eaterie.

Deutsch recently muscled onto the Taco Bell roster alongside ?lead? agency DraftFCB (both agencies are owned by Interpublic). Poor old DraftFCB, by contrast, has been missing out somewhat this Super Bowl season: Mondelez?s Oreo, where DraftFCB is also supposed to be lead agency, has given its Super Bowl task to non-roster Wieden+Kennedy Portland.

It was directed by Noam Murro for Biscuit Filmworks.

The Super Bowl isn?t just popular in the US of course, 16 million people watch it over the border in Canada too. So, for the second year in a row, Hyundai Canada is entering the fray with this ad Hyundai ?Gaspocalypse? from in-house agency Innocean Worldwide plugging the fuel-efficient Sonata Hybrid.

It was directed by Benjamin Weinstein for Steam Films/Tool of America.

Chastened Congress takes on immigration, seeks Rubio's mojo

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan group of leading senators has reached agreement on the principles for a sweeping overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, including a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.

The deal, to be announced at a news conference Monday, also covers border security, non-citizen or "guest" workers and employer verification of immigration status.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain, the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation's inefficient patchwork of immigration laws.

President Barack Obama also is committed to enacting comprehensive immigration legislation and will travel to Nevada on Tuesday to lay out his vision, which is expected to overlap in important ways with the Senate effort.

Passage of legislation by the full Democratic-controlled Senate is far from assured, but the tallest hurdle could come in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans who've shown little interest in immigration reform.

Still, with some Republicans chastened by the November elections which demonstrated the importance of Latino voters and their increasing commitment to Democrats, some in the GOP say this time will be different.

"What's changed, honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle ? including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle ? that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

"I think the time is right," McCain said.

Besides McCain, the senators expected to endorse the new principles Monday are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

The group claims a notable newcomer in Rubio, a potential 2016 presidential candidate whose conservative bona fides may help smooth the way for support among conservatives wary of anything that smacks of amnesty. In an opinion piece published Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Rubio wrote that the existing system amounts to "de facto amnesty," and he called for "commonsense reform."

According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, the senators will call for accomplishing four goals:

?Creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already here, contingent upon securing the border and better tracking of people here on visas.

?Reforming the legal immigration system, including awarding green cards to immigrants who obtain advanced degrees in science, math, technology or engineering from an American university.

?Creating an effective employment verification system to ensure that employers do not hire illegal immigrants in the future, including requiring prospective workers to verify legal status and identity through a non-forgeable electronic system.

?Allowing more low-skill workers into the country and allowing employers to hire immigrants if they can demonstrate they couldn't recruit a U.S. citizen; and establishing an agricultural worker program.

The principles being released Monday are outlined on just over four pages, leaving plenty of details left to fill in. What the senators do call for is similar to Obama's goals and some past efforts by Democrats and Republicans, since there's wide agreement in identifying problems with the current immigration system. The most difficult disagreement is likely to arise over how to accomplish the path to citizenship.

In order to satisfy the concerns of Rubio and other Republicans, the senators are calling for the completion of steps on border security and oversight of those here on visas before taking major steps forward on the path to citizenship.

Even then, those here illegally would have to pass background checks and pay fines and taxes in order to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency, a critical step toward citizenship. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already in line for a green card within the current immigration system.

That could be a highly cumbersome process, but how to make it more workable is being left to future negotiations. The senators envision a more streamlined process toward citizenship for immigrants brought here as children, and for agricultural workers.

The American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement that the framework agreed on by the senators could provide important protections for illegal immigrants who are exploited by employers and live in "constant fear" over their immigration status.

But the ACLU took issue with the proposal to require employers to use an electronic employment-verification system, calling it "a thinly disguised national ID requirement" that would undermine employees' privacy and lead to discrimination against those "who look or sound 'foreign.'"

The debate will play out at the start of Obama's second term, as he aims to spend the political capital afforded him by his re-election victory on an issue that has eluded past presidents and stymied him during his first term despite his promises to the Latino community to act.

"As the president has made clear for some time, immigration reform is an important priority and he is pleased that progress is being made with bipartisan support," a White House spokesman, Clark Stevens, said in a statement. "At the same time, he will not be satisfied until there is meaningful reform and he will continue to urge Congress to act until that is achieved."

For Republicans, the November elections were a stark schooling on the importance of Latino voters, who voted for Obama over Republican Mitt Romney 71 percent to 27 percent, helping ensure Obama's victory. That led some Republican leaders to conclude that supporting immigration reform with a path to citizenship has become a political imperative.

Yahoo's 4Q report shows more signs of progress

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo showed more signs of progress during the fourth quarter as the Internet company took advantage of higher ad prices and rising earnings from its international investments to deliver numbers that exceeded analyst forecasts.

The results announced Monday covered Yahoo's first full quarter under CEO Marissa Mayer. Yahoo Inc. lured Mayer away from Google Inc. in mid-July in its latest attempt to snap out of a funk that had depressed its revenue and stock price.

The company fared well enough in the final three months of last year to produce its first full-year gain in revenue since 2008.

Yahoo is now being run by its fifth permanent or interim CEO since then. Mayer, 37, has been focusing on improving employee morale and building better mobile and social networking services so Yahoo can make more money from two of technology's hottest trends.

Her efforts so far haven't made a huge difference in Yahoo's ad sales ? the company's main way of making money. For instance, during the final three months of last year, Yahoo's revenue from search and display advertising totaled $1.07 billion, roughly the same as a year earlier.

But Yahoo's average price for display ad on its website rose 7 percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, the average price for Yahoo's search ads increased by 1 percent from the previous year. The upturn indicates advertisers believe Mayer's changes are paying off.

Investors are clearly impressed with what Mayer has been doing. Yahoo's stock gained 92 cents, or 4.5 percent, to $21.23 in extended trading. The shares are now up by 35 percent since Mayer joined the Sunnyvale, Calif., company.

Yahoo has been benefiting from its significant stakes in Yahoo Japan and China's Alibaba Group, two Internet companies that have been thriving. Yahoo's fourth-quarter income from its investments increased 17 percent from the previous year to nearly $149 million.

Overall, Yahoo's fourth-quarter earnings dipped 8 percent from the previous year to $272 million, or 23 cents per share, from $296 million, or 24 cents per share. The earnings would have been higher than the previous year, if not for a charge to close its South Korea operations and other one-time accounting items.

If not for those charges, Yahoo said it would have earned 32 cents per share. On that basis, Yahoo topped the average estimate of 27 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Yahoo's fourth-quarter revenue increased 2 percent from the previous year to $1.35 billion.

After subtracting advertising commissions, Yahoo's fourth-quarter revenue stood at $1.22 billion ? about $10 million above analyst forecasts.

Gutter Talk

There has been quite a bit of talk lately about gutters here on Active Rain. I have even blogged about them as well. The need and the reasoning for having them is unquestionable. We all know that letting water pour off of your roof and splash onto the soil that is the foundation of your home is not a good idea. In this case, the gutters were installed, but they really were totally ineffective, ok I will say it... useless!

If they are not installed and pitched correctly they will not do the job as intended for the homeowner. Here, you can see that they are too low, the flow of water running down the valleys of the clay tiles is still much higher than the upper outside lip of the gutter. So, you know where the water is going, right? Right over the top to the driveway below.

So the poor homeowner built dams at the corners of his garage door jambs to keep the water that was flooding his driveway when it rains hard from going into his garage.

I'm pretty sure I would be calling the gutter guy back out to the house... "Uhhh, buddy, the gutters aren't working"

?

They could raise the level of the gutters, or install a splash guard on the outer edge of the gutter to stop the deluge...?

?

UFC on Fox 6 results: Demetrious Johnson retains title, ?Rampage? loses in Octagon finale

CHICAGO -- The UFC's stop in the Windy City had two great knockouts, a champion holding onto his belt, and the last fight of a one-time champ.

Despite a strong start by John Dodson, Demetrious Johnson held onto his championship belt with a unanimous decision. The judges saw it 48-47, 49-46, 48-47 for Johnson.

Unsurprisingly, Johnson and Dodson fought a fast-paced first two rounds. Johnson tried to slow things down in the first round with a takedown. While he did get Dodson to to the ground, the challenger popped back to his feet quickly.

Dodson dropped Johnson twice in the second round, and shook off Johnson's take down attempts with a great sprawl. Johnson seemed to have a hard time even getting close to Dodson to land a punch.

[Related: T.J. Grant and Ryan Bader shine at UFC on Fox 6]

A Johnson knee in the fourth round caused a small fight stoppage. Dodson's hand was on the ground as Johnson threw a knee to Dodson's head, which is an illegal strike. The bout was stopped as doctors checked Dodson's eye and Johnson was warned. The fight went on, but not without plenty of boos from the crowd in Chicago.

When the fight restarted, it was all Johnson. He controlled Dodson against the cage, and threw knees that busted up Dodson's face. Johnson was able to get a takedown at the beginning of the fifth round, too. Though boos rained down, Johnson kept the fight against the cage.

Later, the crowd got behind him as Johnson elevated, tightened his legs around Dodson's torso and threw elbows. It was a creative move that likely could only happen in the flyweight division. Johnson finished the round with Dodson against the cage, and knee after knee after knee to the body and face.

Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson vs. Glover Teixeira

If this really was Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's last fight in the UFC, it wasn't one to remember. He was outstruck and outwrestled by Glover Teixeira throughout their bout. Teixeira took the fight 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 on the judges' cards.

Teixeira's first round was his best, as he was able to take Jackson down early and mount him and take his back. Late in the round, Teixeira knocked Jackson down with a punch and looked close to finishing, but wasn't able to end the fight.

The rest of the fight featured a worn out Jackson trying to avoid Teixeira's takedown attempts unsuccessfully. Jackson threw some big punches, and even jawed at Teixeira during the bout, but he wasn't able to score any big offense.

While this fight will be remembered for being Jackson's last UFC bout, Teixeira scored his third straight UFC win on Saturday night. He looked impressive against the former champ.

Anthony Pettis vs. Donald Cerrone

Anthony Pettis won his much anticipated bout with Donald Cerrone by landing big, memorable strikes. Pettis was getting the better of their striking exchanges early, which set him up for a big finish. Pettis threw a kick that landed hard on Cerrone's body, then finished with a punch. Cerrone fell to the ground in a heap, and the fight was stopped at 2:35 in the first round.

Pettis lost his first fight in the UFC after coming from the WEC as the champ, but he's been winning ever since. He has wins over Joe Lauzon, Jeremy Stephens and now Cerrone. After the fight, he made a pitch to UFC president Dana White.

"I want my title shot. I should have had it years ago. People say I can?t wrestle because of the Guida fight, but I had a serious shoulder injury. Now I am 100 percent. No one can do in the Octagon what I can do."

While lightweight champion Benson Henderson has a fight set up with Gilbert Melendez, a shot for Pettis isn't unwarranted. It would be a rematch of their WEC title fight, which Pettis won in the promotion's final fight.

Ricardo Lamas vs. Erik Koch

Lamas won the first round by constantly pressuring Koch against the cage. It wasn't exactly the most thrilling round to have start a card on network television, but it led to a thrilling second round. Lamas took advantage of Koch's slip, and then finished the fight with nasty, nasty ground and pound. Lamas started with elbows, then started with strikes that cut open Koch's face. Koch had no answer for Lamas' relentless strikes, and the bout was stopped at 2:32 in the second round.

Lamas thought his performance warranted a title shot.

"I?ve beat Cub Swanson, I?ve beat Hioki and now I?ve beat Koch. All those guys were supposed to be fighting for the title at one point. I beat them all. We?re all here to be world champ and I am no different. I want the winner of Aldo vs Edgar next week. I don?t care who wins, I want the winner."

Oil up slightly after mixed US economic reports

(AP) ? The price of oil rose on Monday after a strong durable goods report in the U.S.

Demand for long-lasting manufactured goods rose sharply in December with gains in volatile aircraft orders, the Commerce Department said. But the number of pending home sales fell last month after hitting a 2 ? year high in November.

Benchmark oil rose 25 cents to $96.13 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

It's a big week for U.S. economic indicators. In addition to Monday's data, the government will release reports on weekly jobless claims, unemployment and fourth-quarter growth. And the Federal Reserve's policy committee holds a two-day meeting that concludes on Wednesday.

At the pump, the average price for a gallon of gas rose over the weekend to $3.35, the highest level since the second week of December.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was down 27 cents to $113.01 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 5 cents to $2.94 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 12 cents to $3.34 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil was unchanged at $3.04 a gallon.

In the last 12 to 18 weeks financial markets worldwide came under massive financial pressure. This situation may keep on for at least another planning period and most likely well beyond. An economic crisis is certainly a stage of a normalized company cycle; nevertheless the scale and possible length of the present cycle isn?t any doubt special. As such there?s never been a larger requirement for comprehensive Strategic Planning.A well integrated Strategic Planning Process has always been the hallmark of positive market share expansion and solid Company earnings among industry leaders. The Process is an annual control that sets in place all of the solution and project initiatives for the future year in addition to the running initiatives and costs for each of the business units or functional areas of the company. The Annual Strategic Planning Process might begin in the latter part of the next quarter with the external Environmental Scan assessment of the market. The Strategic Planning Team( s) for every business unit might make the research information. They would then just take Senior Management through a comprehensive evaluation and update of the political changes including the enormous potentially positive effect of the ?bailout? action strategies of the Barack Obama and Stephen Harper businesses, the ?New Reality? financial operating environment and its potential business effects, regulatory changes, and social developments due to their marketplace. The next level would be the competitive environmental update with close interest each key competitor as well as new entrants and those exiting the business. The study data on consumer and supplier report changes which could impact the business in the years ahead is also an important factor. There?s no question that both the developments in engineering and the seemingly ?out of the orange? birth of low standard rivals might actually, plus a floundering economy, be the most critical features of Strategic Planning in this business cycle. It can?t be emphasized enough this ?vision critical? facet of the Strategic Planning Process. It?s frequently been mentioned that firms of most shapes that either go broke or enter Chapter 11, don?t plan to fail, they only fail to plan. They have a tendency to accepted internalized, very linear planning operations with little thought of the running environment. In larger firms this stage of the method might take up to two months, for smaller businesses, significantly less. But irrespective of organizational measurement the process is really a crucial annual feature of the ?superiority? businesses which have always been the theme of the Tom Peters/Robert Waterman ?Looking for Excellence? articles on America?s finest run companies. All too often the path of an strategic planning process with merely a quick consider the conventional opposition has generated market share self destruction. A great just to illustrate may come from the portable devices market. Did Panasonic Company see Apple Us coming? Oftentimes not. As a very nontraditional competition, how can the Apple iPod and Apple iTunes come right into an already overcrowded marketplace; put a very considerable position in the ground with goods that were more than double the price and take massive market share from Sony Walkman, Sony Discman and Sony Watchman, among others?Again, as an example, was the Strategic Planning Process at Nokia Corporation, the world leader in the cell phone market, too dedicated to traditional product and traditional opposition? How may Apple iPhone and iPod Touch if not Blackberry, come into a really value position competing industry, generate need with numerous function items and get huge pieces of market share? Nokia Corp. Only introduced (03/18/09) another layoff of 1700 workers worldwide which used the closing of a study center and layoff of 320 jobs. Nokia had also built 2300 short-term task layoffs a month earlier. There are similar instances in nearly every industry segment. There?s been already a lot of written about GM, Ford and Chrysler and how, in the early years they generally ignored the entry of Honda, Toyota and Datsun (now Nissan) into the United States automotive market place. All too often a company?s greatest power fundamentally becomes their greatest weakness. For many years the energy of the UAW/CAW in collective bargaining for wages, rewards and working conditions displayed in many ways the solid foundation of the United States automobile market in attracting and keeping a skilled workforce. Today it?s arguably its biggest weakness. In more modern years both KIA and Hyundai also have seriously the picture. Market which was indicated by: (1) big barriers to entry, (2) billions of dollars of upfront fees and (3) brand loyalty aggressive forces. While the ?Big Three? continued to accept their ?Big Block? method, consumer research probably pointed to a very considerable quality/fuel efficiency/price point advantage for potential new entrants that history shows represented a huge chance. On the subject of brand loyalty, there?s new brand loyalty around the Toyota Prius, promoted to the new price and environmentally ?green? informed customer who would like a successful vehicle that will plug-and-play with all of the newest media. Again, a corporate approach focused to the competition that have been left by a specific market segment scrambling. With these questions then, what?re the solutions? The answer to all these issues is simple. The Strategic Planning Process is the first rung on the ladder within the discipline of Business Process Management. The follow-up measures are then Business Case Methodology to ensure that each and every substantial Company project is with a comprehensive Business Case for Senior Management and/or Board approval. The next phase in Business Process Management is both the Item Development Process or the Project Management Process that represents a, staged workflow procedure to ensure on time/on budget outcomes. You can find ?go and number go? always check things for timely reporting back once again to Senior Management/Board within each procedure. The final point of the end of a project will be its transport into Operations. The final stage of the completion and release of a product will be the exchange of product duties in to the Product Management Process.Whether it is a Bowl Champion, a Series Champion an Champion, a College Champion, Senior School Champion or even a Corporate Champion the process is quite similar. To each discipline there is an and within the process there are basics. Embrace the method and develop into a fan at the fundamentals.

New home construction increases sharply in December

By Alejandro Lazo

?

Construction of new residential buildings saw a sharp increase in December, driven largely by work begun on new apartments.

The Commerce Department reported that builders started on new housing at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 954,000 units, up 12.1% from November and up 36.9% from December 2011.

Although construction became a part of the housing recovery last year, it hasn?t made a significant contribution to the hiring picture, Jed Kolko, chief economist for real estate website Trulia.com, wrote in an e-mailed analysis.

?The construction rebound hasn?t created new construction jobs,? Kolko wrote. ?In 2012 builders bet on local markets with strong job growth and low vacancy rates, not markets experiencing a big price bounce-back.?

Builders began work on 780,000 homes last year ? up 28.1% from 2011, when new home construction hit a record low, and the most since 2008. But the number of starts last year was still sluggish compared with historical standards, economists noted.

Resentment runs deep in Azeri town hit by rioting

ISMAILLI, Azerbaijan (Reuters) - The charred remains of a hotel are the only overt sign of rioting that swept this small Azeri town this week, but the resentment that fuelled the violence is hard to miss.

The Ismailli riot was quashed as quickly by police as other protests in the former Soviet republic but sent a warning to President Ilham Aliyev: Patience is wearing thin with the huge wealth gap a decade after he succeeded his long-ruling father.

Ismailli, with its dreary one-storey Soviet-era buildings, shows no sign of benefiting from the vast oil and natural gas riches that have helped transform parts of the capital Baku into a showcase of shimmering glass and metal where luxury cars cruise next to the Caspian Sea.

Residents of the town of 15,000, about 200 km (125 miles) northwest of Baku, complain of corruption across the tightly controlled country of nine million, an overbearing government and a lack of jobs, money and prospects.

They said Thursday's rioting was spontaneous, caused by anger over what one called the "unacceptable behavior of rich guys from the capital" suspected of involvement in a car accident, but that passions were fed by deep-seated resentment.

"Their behavior was just the last straw and became a reason for the disturbances," said Mamed, a 50-year-old man who declined to give his full name.

Samir, a 26-year-old market stall holder, said: "The people in the leadership of our country care only about their own interests and forget about ordinary people like us."

Squeezed between Iran and Russia, mainly Muslim Azerbaijan is a transit hub for U.S. troops based in Afghanistan - a role its critics say limits Western powers' willingness to sanction Baku over human rights abuses and concerns about democracy.

Azerbaijan also supplies energy to Europe and Western oil companies who are involved in bringing Caspian oil through the Caucasus country would be concerned by any widespread violence and instability. But few would expect that to happen now, months before a presidential election due in October.

"I don't believe that this situation can spread to other regions as there is no basis for that," Ali Akhmedov, deputy chairman of the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party, told a meeting with residents on Friday.

"And it's not linked to this being an election year. There are just some destructive forces inside the country who are interested in the destabilization of the situation, but they are weak."

STRUGGLE TO MAKE ENDS MEET

The Chirag Hotel was a target of the rioters because it was owned by the driver involved in the car accident. His wealth and brash behavior had long upset the locals, some residents said.

All that is left of the hotel now is some burnt black walls. It was set ablaze by a crowd of 3,000 after a mass brawl that started after the owner drove his car into an electricity pole and was suspected of being drunk.

Overt displays of wealth, common among the lucky few who have struck it rich across the former Soviet Union, breed discontent among those at the other end of the scale who are just struggling to make ends meet.

"Our main problem is unemployment. There are no jobs at all and local government does not do anything to help us," said a 57-year-old woman who identified herself only as Elmira.

She has made her living at the local fruit and vegetable market since the closure of the tobacco factory where she used to work.

Her state pension is 200 manats, 80 manats of which she pays for electricity and other public services. Her disabled husband receives a minimum pension of 70 manats, and her two sons are unemployed.

Samir, the market stall holder, said he used to work in a shop in Baku but had returned to his native town two years ago after losing his job in the capital.

"I earn about 300 manats ($375) each month, but how can you live on this money with wife and a kid," he says.

ALIYEV DYNASTY

Aliyev was assured of the presidency by being nominated as the ruling party's candidate by his father, Heydar, in 2003. Heydar Aliyev had ruled Azerbaijan as Communist Party chief in Soviet times and returned as president in 1993, two years after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Ilham Aliyev is expected to win a presidential election in October but, despite the lack of an obvious alternative, is sure to do his utmost to prevent protests spreading.

Young Azeri opposition activists posted a message via Facebook calling for a protest in Baku on Friday in support of Ismailli residents, but later postponed it until Saturday without giving a reason.

Mass protests are rare and are usually quashed quickly by police in Azerbaijan. Riot police also managed quickly to disperse a protest last March in the town of Quba, 170 km (100 miles) north of Baku, after several hundred residents demanded the resignation of its mayor.

Local authorities and officials who arrived in Ismailli from Baku met residents on Friday to try to keep a lid on discontent.

Nizami Alekperov, the local governor, dismissed calls for his resignation during this week's protests and made light of the rioting.

"Such incidents spoil the image of our region, which is becoming an attractive tourist destination," he said.

US, Europe hope the new year brings better times

NEW YORK (AP) ? From the glittering New Year's ball dropping in Times Square to joyous fireworks in London and cheers in a once-isolated Asian country, the world did its best to ring in 2013 with hope for renewal after a year of economic uncertainty, searing violence and natural disasters.

"With all the sadness in the country, we're looking for some good changes in 2013," Laura Concannon, of Hingham, Mass., said as she, her husband, Kevin, and his parents joined hundreds of thousands of revelers lined up for blocks through bustling Times Square on Monday.

Yvonne Gomez, 53, a physician from Grand Forks, N.D., glowed as she and her husband, 63-year-old potato farmer Gregg Halverson, took in the festivities in New York.

"I couldn't begin the new year in a more beautiful way," she said. "I married him two weeks ago and here we are in the middle of Times Square celebrating the new year ? two widowers who found each other."

Revelers with New Year's hats and sunglasses boasting "2013" packed the streets in the 35-degree cold to count down the first ball drop in decades without Dick Clark, who died in April and was honored with his name printed on pieces of confetti and on one of the crystal panels on the Times Square ball.

Matias Dellanno, 37, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, stood in the middle of the square with his wife and 3-year-old son, beaming with joy as his eyes caught the multicolored lighting illuminating the square just before midnight.

"I feel a completely new hope for 2013," he said. "It can't be any worse than last year, when my business lost clients. It was a rough year for everyone. The new year has to be better!"

Security in Times Square was tight, with a mass of uniformed police and plainclothes officers assigned to blend into the crowd. With police Commissioner Raymond Kelly proclaiming that Times Square would be the "safest place in the world on New Year's Eve," officers used barriers to prevent overcrowding and checkpoints to inspect vehicles, enforce a ban on alcohol and check handbags.

Syracuse University student Taylor Nanz, 18, said she and a friend had been standing in Times Square since 1:20 p.m. Monday. They hadn't moved from their spot because "if you leave, you lose your place," she said, shivering behind an iron barricade with a clear view of One Times Square, the building where the crystal ball hovered.

"It's the first time - and the last time," she said.

Celebrations also were held around the country, from the family-oriented, alcohol-free first night event in Scranton, Pa., to expensive private parties and sold-out musical acts in Las Vegas, featuring Beyonce, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Black Keys.

Elsewhere, lavish fireworks displays lit up skylines in Sydney, Hong Kong and Shanghai. In the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai, multicolored fireworks danced early Tuesday up and down the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

In Rome, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated New Year's Eve with a vespers service in St. Peter's Basilica to give thanks for 2012 and look ahead to 2013. He said that despite all the death and injustice in the world, goodness prevails.

In Russia, spectators filled Moscow's iconic Red Square as fireworks exploded near the Kremlin. In Rio de Janeiro, revelers dressed head-to-toe in white as dictated by Brazilian new years' tradition flooded onto Copacabana beach for a concert.

Organizers said about 90,000 people gathered in a large field Yangon, Myanmar, for their first chance to do what much of the world does every Dec. 31 - watch a countdown. The reformist government that took office in 2011 in the country, long under military rule, threw its first public New Year's celebration in decades.

"We feel like we are in a different world," said Yu Thawda, a university student who went with three of her friends.

Parts of Europe held scaled-back festivities and street parties, the mood a bit restrained - if hopeful - for a 2013 that is projected to be a sixth straight year of recession amid Greece's worst economic crisis since World War II.

London, the often soggy British capital, was dry and clear, as the familiar chimes of the clock inside the Big Ben tower counted down the final seconds of 2012 and a dazzling display of fireworks lit the skies above Parliament Square. People cheered as the landmarks were bathed in the light of the display, which included streamers shot out of the London Eye wheel and blazing rockets launched from the banks of the River Thames.

Elsewhere, the atmosphere of celebration was muted with concern.

Hotels, clubs and other sites in New Delhi, the Indian capital, canceled festivities after the death of a rape victim on Saturday touched off days of mourning and reflection about women's safety.

In Times Square, some revelers checked their cellphones to keep up with news of lawmakers' tentative deal to skirt the fiscal cliff combination of expiring tax cuts and across-the-board spending cuts that threatened to reverberate globally. And the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., and Superstorm Sandy mingled into the memories of 2012.

"This has been a very eventful year, on many levels," Denise Norris said as she and her husband, the Rev. Urie Norris, surveyed the crowd jamming Times Square for the countdown show with Ryan Seacrest as host.

Seacrest remembered Clark and his legacy, saying it was one that would be continued, and that Clark himself had told him, "Seacrest, the show must go on."

Elvis Rivera, of Manhattan, was taking photos in Times Square to capture the moment. He wasn't planning to ring in the new year there but went by to take pictures.

How did he feel about the end of 2012?

"Relieved," Rivera said, adding that there had been a death and job losses in his family this year.

Space may accelerate Alzheimer's in astronauts

Radiation in space might harm the brains of astronauts in deep space by accelerating the development of Alzheimer's disease, a new study on mice suggests.

The research reveals another risk that manned deep-space missions to places such as Mars or the asteroids could pose, scientists added.

"This study shows for the first time that exposure to radiation levels equivalent to a mission to Mars could produce cognitive problems and speed up changes in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer's disease," study author Kerry O'Banion, a neuroscientist at the University of Rochester Medical Center, said in a statement.

    1. How Neil Armstrong planned his moon speech

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Neil Armstrong's brother tells the BBC that he gave the late astronaut feedback on his history-making speech months before it was uttered on the moon.

    2. First meteor shower of 2013 peaks this week
    3. 13 new space missions to watch in 2013
    4. Space may accelerate Alzheimer's in astronauts

Space is filled with radiation that can harm people. While Earth's magnetic field generally protects the planet, once astronauts venture beyond low-Earth orbit, they are constantly bombarded by a shower of dangerous particles known as cosmic rays. The longer an astronaut is in deep space, the greater the risk, which is especially of concern given NASA plans for manned missions to an asteroid in 2025 and to Mars by about 2035 ? the round trip to the Red Planet alone could take at least two years.

For more than 25 years, NASA has funded studies to see what the potential dangers of space travel might be. For instance, past research analyzed the potential impact of cosmic rays on the risk for cancer and potential problems with the cardiovascular or musculoskeletal systems.

Now scientists have for the first time examined the effects space radiation might have on neurodegeneration ? in particular, the biological processes in the brain linked with the development of Alzheimer's disease, which typically involves progressive mental decline over several years. They found "galactic cosmic radiation poses a significant threat to future astronauts," O'Banion said. [ Inside the Brain: Photo Journey Through Time ]

Perils of space radiation
O'Banion and his colleaguesinvestigated a specific kind of space radiation known as high-mass, high-charged (or HZE) particles. These particles zip through space at very high speeds, likely the result of exploding stars and other deep-space catastrophes from elsewhere in the galaxy. Unlike cosmic rays consisting just of hydrogen nuclei, which solar flares generate, the mass and speed of HZE particles allow them to punch through solid objects such as a spacecraft, or any astronauts inside.

"Because iron particles pack a bigger wallop, it is extremely difficult from an engineering perspective to effectively shield against them," O'Banion said. "One would have to essentially wrap a spacecraft in a 6-foot block of lead or concrete."

The scientists focused on the impact of iron HZE particles generated by particle accelerators at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. Mice were dosed throughout their body with levels of radiation comparable to what astronauts might receive during a mission to Mars.

The mental function of the mice was tested with a series of experiments ? for instance, they had to recognize places linked with unpleasant electric shocks to their feet ? and rodents dosed with radiation were far more likely to fail at these tasks. The brains of the mice also showed signs of inflamed blood vessels, and possessed abnormally high levels of beta amyloid, a protein that accumulates as one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease.

"These findings clearly suggest that exposure to radiation in space has the potential to accelerate the development of Alzheimer's disease," O'Banion said. "This is yet another factor that NASA, which is clearly concerned about the health risks to its astronauts, will need to take into account as it plans future missions."

Space radiation vs. astronaut
It remains uncertain why these HZE particles might have this effect on the brain.

"This is, of course, the $10 million question," O'Banion told SPACE.com. The fact the researchers saw a blood vessel response, but not clear evidence of brain inflammation "suggests the possibility that the radiation effects are actually in the body of the mice, and that changes there might be affecting amyloid deposition."

O'Banion did caution "we gave the radiation all at once ? the mice experienced over a few minutes what astronauts will experience over three years. We have no idea whether the biological effects of HZE particles will be the same when given at low dose rates. Many would argue that ours is a worse-case scenario, and that the changes are likely to be entirely different since the body might adapt to small chronic dosing."

In the future, O'Banion and his colleagues will examine the effects the brain experiences from exposure to radiation elsewhere in the body. They also plan to see whether space radiation might influence development of Parkinson's disease.

"I would add that there are at least three other laboratories pursuing similar studies," O'Banion said. "The nice thing about this is that we will soon know if our results hold up in other labs."

The scientists detailed their findings online Dec. 31 in the journal PLOS ONE.

Positive Housing Predictions for 2013 | Daily Business News

> Advocacy, Business, Economy, home buyers, News Item, Trends > Positive Housing Predictions for 2013

BusinessInsider tells MHProNews John Burns Real Estate Consulting offers the following five predictions of what will happen in the New Year in the housing market, ?Assuming our leaders in DC come to some sort of agreement that keeps the economy growing and interest rates low, which seems like the most reasonable assumption.?

  • Investors and flippers will be more prominent as they realize the potential return on real estate investing.
  • Foreclosed borrowers who are now renting will return en masse because they are paying more in rent than a house payment. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and the Dept. of Veterans Affairs offer low down payments loans around 5%.
  • First-time homeowners who have been waiting for the bottom will now see prices rise in their desired neighborhood and begin to buy.
  • Seniors who have sufficient equity in their current homes will purchase a home better suited to their lifestyle, possibly including room for an adult child or aging parent.
  • This past year?s price appreciation has raised one million borrowers from under the water, and continuing appreciation will raise them more.
