Romney convinced by polls he would win election

It may take election experts years to unravel the mystery of why Mitt Romney was convinced he had won the 2012 presidential election, as a new report shows some skewed internal poll numbers, and explains Romney?s two trips to Pennsylvania.

romney wins

Image of Romney's "transition" web site

But at the same time, the article from the New Republic?s Noam Scheiber shows inconsistencies with reports from November 5 and November 6 about the numbers that might have convinced Romney and his team that he had a good chance of beating President Barack Obama in Ohio.

Obama?s resounding win is starting to take on more of a resemblance to Harry Truman?s ?upset? in 1948, with Romney playing the role of Thomas Dewey.

Obama wound up with 332 electoral votes, taking every swing state except North Carolina. Somehow, the Romney campaign was seemingly convinced that he would win one of the final three swing states, or make a strong showing in Pennsylvania.

In the article, Scheiber goes over Romney internal polling numbers from six swing states with Neil Newhouse, the Republican pollster who did the surveys on the weekend before election. Scheiber obtained the numbers from a source and Newhouse agreed to talk about the six states.

The conclusion is that Romney, based on his internal polls, thought he had at least 267 out of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the election, and the election would be decided in four states: Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Nevada

The campaign was also convinced it had momentum in the overall election as voters headed to the polls.

The Romney campaign also believed Pennsylvania was a closer race that Wisconsin, which is why Romney appeared twice in the Keystone State just before the election.

There?s little discussion in the New Republic story about Nevada, so if you can scratch Wisconsin and Nevada from the swing state list, which leaves Ohio and Pennsylvania as the states where the Romney campaign thought it could win the presidential election.

The New Republic provides the Romney internal polling numbers for Pennsylvania, which showed Obama with a three-point lead.

So it seems like Ohio was the focal point of the campaign. The New Republic didn?t obtain detailed Ohio internal polling numbers, but New Republic reported that Newhouse said that Romney trailed, in their internal polling, by just two points in Ohio on the weekend before the election.

There was a widely circulated report about the Ohio internal polling from the Daily Mail on November 5, Election Eve, ?that said Newhouse had Romney up by one point in Ohio and the Romney team thought the races in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania were even.

The Romney team denied the Daily Mail report on November 6, which was Election Day.

But the Daily Mail report also had the Romney team forecasting a three-point lead in New Hampshire, which matches the number supplied to the New Republic.

The difference could be explained by the fact that the New Republic numbers are an average of the Saturday and Sunday polling numbers, and the Daily Mail numbers could be from just Sunday,? which could have Romney gaining several points in each swing state.

Moving forward to Election Night, CNN reporter Peter Hamby dropped a bombshell in the early evening, that Romney?s internal polling showed Obama with a five-point lead in Ohio on Sunday.

Then blogger Taegan Goddard published internal GOP exit polls that showed Romney trailing Obama by four points in Ohio and that Romney only had exit poll leads in two swing states.

In the end, Obama won Ohio by 1.9 percent, and we have three different Romney internal polling numbers for Ohio. The Daily Mail report had Romney up by one point; the New Republic report had Obama up by two points; and the CNN report had Obama up by five points.

The six internal polls published by New Republic show a difference of between 3 and 7 percent from the actual election results, and all the polls overestimated Romney?s performance.

There seems to be less of a difference of opinion about why the polls underestimate the eventual outcome.

An analysis published by Slate on November 9 is similar to the analysis from the New Republic: the Romney team over counted Republicans in their polling and underestimated Obama voter turnout.

?When anyone raised the idea that public polls were showing a close race, the campaign?s pollster said the poll modeling was flawed and everyone moved on. Internally, the campaign?s own polling?tweaked to represent their view of the electorate, with fewer Democrats?showed a steady uptick for Romney since the first debate. Even on the morning of the election, Romney?s senior advisers weren?t close to hedging. They said he was going to win ?decisively,?? said Slate?s John Dickerson.

There also seems to be little doubt that Romney thought, like Thomas Dewey, that he would win the election.

He didn?t have a concession speech prepared, and Romney paid for an eight-minute fireworks display over Boston?s harbor.

The permit for the fireworks expired at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 7.

The Romney team also accidentally published a victory ?transition? web site.

Does Yodeling Require Good Voice?

Yodeling is actually one form of singing. This is different from an ordinary singing because of the intermittent high and low pitch. When you do yodel singing, you extend your note fast and repetitively. The art of yodeling is not new. In fact it had existed from several cultures all over the globe many years ago. It is a big wonder that different cultures perform yodeling differently.

Who of you have heard someone yodeling? A lot of us heard a lot of people doing it. Some appreciate the sound but there are a lot of people who conceive of it as mere noise.

Yodeling is actually one form of singing. This is different from an ordinary singing because of the intermittent high and low pitch. When you do yodel singing, you extend your note fast and repetitively. As you do this, you need to alter the pitch of the chord that emanates from the chest.

Yodeling as done by other nations

The art of yodeling is not new. In fact it had existed from several cultures all over the globe many years ago. It is a big wonder that different cultures perform yodeling differently. You will find the Africans, Swiss and Persian yodelers doing the art in versions inherent in their culture. The pygmy performers coming from Central America use another version of yodeling known as detailed polyphonic singing. The Persian version does yodeling with an accompaniment of a tahir; this is an instrument that causes fluctuations in the yodeling tones.

How about people from the Swiss Alps? To these people, yodeling was a mere means of communication when they are up in mountain peaks. Because this had been frequently used, yodel developed into a traditional style of music for many Swiss people.

Pitch in the human voice

In yodeling, you use your human voice. This has two individual registers which are called head voices and chest voices. As said, yodeling is a high-low then high-low pitch. The high pitch comes from the head register while the low pitch emanates from the chest register. Thus when yodeling you will use both your head and chest.

The pitch range between the head and the chest is difficult to attain. Even if you are already experienced in singing this, you will still encounter the difficulty. These experienced yodelers could possible attain the desired range through vocal trainings. What these experienced singers are able to do is control their voices in order to overlap the ranges. When this is done, you will be able to change from the high quality pitch of the head to the low quality pitch from the chest. If you will succeed in going backwards and forwards (head to the chest chords) or vice versa repeatedly, you be able to successfully yodel.

How to do this is simple. Try to yodel - Yodayeeeeoooo. Make the Eee come from the head voice and all the rest from the chest voice. As you do this, you try to alternate the high and the low pitch. Successfully doing this, you can comfortably be yodeling.

Yodeling is now a contemporary music. And when you want to be into the music industry you have to learn this craft. Remember that this is not learned overnight, practice makes perfect!

HP alleges Autonomy wrongdoing, takes $5 billion charge

(Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co on Tuesday took a massive $5 billion charge, claiming a raft of improprieties, misrepresentation and disclosure failures at software firm Autonomy, which it acquired last October for $11.1 billion.

HP said it discovered "serious accounting improprieties" and "a willful effort by Autonomy to mislead shareholders" after a whistleblower came forward.

The latest charge, which follows a nearly $11 billion charge last quarter for its EDS services division, is the latest blow to HP. The technology company has been roiled in the past few years by a revolving door of CEOs, overall management turnover and challenges in its core personal computer and printer businesses.

Former Autonomy Chief Executive Mike Lynch, who was pushed out in May, "flatly rejected" HP's allegations.

"The former management team of Autonomy was shocked to see this statement today, and flatly rejects these allegations, which are false," a Lynch spokeswoman said in a brief statement to Reuters.

HP took $8.8 billion in charges in the fourth quarter, with $5 billion tied to the problems at Autonomy.

HP said it has referred the matter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's enforcement division and the UK's Serious Fraud Office for civil and criminal investigation. It said it will take legal action to recoup "what we can for our shareholders."

HP informed both the SEC and the Serious Fraud Office over the past week. Both agencies declined to comment.

HP's stock slid to a 10-year low, losing 11.2 percent to $11.81 in afternoon trading. Shares are down nearly 50 percent year to date.

INFLATED SALES, REVENUE

HP alleged that Autonomy's former management inflated revenue and gross margins. It said Autonomy executives mischaracterized revenue from low-end hardware sales as software sales and booked some licensing deals with partners as revenue, even though no customer bought the product.

HP said it began an internal investigation, including a forensic review by PricewaterhouseCoopers of Autonomy's historical financial results, under HP General Counsel John Schultz after the whistleblower came forward.

Schultz said since the accounting troubles occurred prior to the acquisition, it took a long time before the company was in a position to make the news public.

"Not surprisingly, Autonomy did not have sitting on a shelf somewhere a set of well-maintained books that would walk you through what was actually happening from a financial perspective inside the company," he said. "Indeed critical documents were missing from the obvious places, and it required that we look in every nook and cranny."

HP CEO Meg Whitman said her predecessor, Leo Apotheker and the former chief strategy officer, Shane Robison, were the key people behind the Autonomy acquisition.

Apotheker was ousted as CEO in September 2011 after just 11 months on the job and Robison left soon after.

"Most of the board was here and voted for this deal, and we feel terribly about that," said Whitman on a call with analysts. "The board relied on audited financials, audited by Deloitte. Not Brand X accounting firm, but Deloitte," she said, adding that KPMG was hired to audit Deloitte.

"Neither of them saw what we now see after someone came forward to point us in the right direction," Whitman said.

Other advisers who worked on the deal included Qatalyst Partners, the investment bank run by technology investment banker Frank Quattrone; UBS; Goldman Sachs; Citigroup; JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America for Autonomy. Perella Weinberg Partners and Barclays Capital advised for HP.

Law firms for Autonomy were Slaughter & May and Morgan Lewis. The firms for HP included Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; Drinker Biddle & Reath; and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, which advised the board.

Lynch said he was "shocked to see" HP's allegations, adding that its due diligence prior to the acquisition was "intensive." He said HP's senior management was "closely involved with running Autonomy for the past year."

In response, Whitman said on CNBC the company stands by its findings.

In a statement, Apotheker said he was "stunned and disappointed" by the revelations and offered to make himself available to HP and the authorities to get to the bottom of the matter.

Robert Enderle, a tech analyst at the Enderle Group, said he has never seen such a potential misrepresentation of financials.

"You have to rely on what the firm gives you during due diligence and I've never seen a misstatement at this level," Enderle said.

If the charges are true, it could result in a massive punitive damages award for HP, Enderle said.

Other analysts hoped it was the end of the bad news for the company.

"This kind of feels like the last of the bad news," Forrester analyst Frank Gillett said.

FOURTH-QUARTER LOSS

The Autonomy allegations and announcement of the charge coincided with the reporting of a fourth-quarter loss for HP.

Net revenue fell 6.7 percent to $29.96 billion for the fourth quarter ended October 31 from $32.12 billion a year earlier. Analysts, on average, expected $30.43 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue from all of its main business units declined, with the personal computer division recording the steepest drop at 14 percent.

HP reported a quarterly net loss of $6.85 billion, or $3.49 a share, versus a profit of $239 million, or 12 cents, a year earlier.

The sprawling company, which employs more than 300,000 people globally, is undergoing a restructuring aimed at focusing on enterprise services in the mold of International Business Machines Corp.

"To put it bluntly ... this story has been an unmitigated train wreck, and it seems every time management speaks to the Street, there is new negative incremental information forthcoming," said ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall.

Keselowski wins Sprint Cup title

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) ? Here's a tweet for Brad Keselowski: NASCAR champion.

Roger Penske must like the sound of that, too.

The kid who stole the show at the season-opening Daytona 500 ended the year under the biggest spotlight of them all Sunday, beating five-time champion Jimmie Johnson to deliver the first Sprint Cup championship to Penske Racing.

His first act as champion? Sending a tweet, of course, from inside his car: "We did it!" with a picture of the celebration waiting for him.

"Always, throughout my whole life I've been told I'm not big enough, not fast enough, not strong enough and I don't have what it takes," Keselowski said from the championship stage. "I've used that as a chip on my shoulder to carry me through my whole career. It took until this year for me to realize that that was right, man, they were right.

"I'm not big enough, fast enough, strong enough. No person is. Only a team can do that."

So, with the Penske organization behind him, he delivered a trophy that had eluded "The Captain" since his 1972 NASCAR debut. Although his motorsports organization is considered the gold standard of open-wheel racing ? 15 Indianapolis 500 wins ? and his empire has made Penske one of the most successful businessmen in America, his NASCAR team has always been just average.

Then came Keselowski, the blue collar, Twitter-loving, Michigan native who visited Penske in 2008 convinced the NASCAR team could win, too.

Three years later, they hoisted the Sprint Cup trophy together at Homestead-Miami Speedway following Keselowski's 15th-place finish Sunday night.

"It's all about the people in our organization and obviously Brad coming on our board three years ago, and we set a plan and we stuck to it," the 75-year-old Penske said. "To win this championship is amazing."

Keselowski needed 125 starts to win his first championship, the fewest starts since four-time champion Jeff Gordon won his first title in 93 starts in 1995. Keselowski also won a second-tier Nationwide title in 2010, his first season with Penske and the owner's first official NASCAR championship.

Gordon, who avoided suspension this week but was fined $100,000 by NASCAR for intentionally wrecking Clint Bowyer last week at Phoenix, overcame the controversy to win the race in a 20th anniversary celebration for sponsor Dupont and Hendrick Motorsports.

It was Gordon's first victory at Homestead, which leaves Kentucky as the only active NASCAR track where he's yet to win.

Who did Gordon beat? Bowyer, of course.

And Bowyer's second-place finish moved him to a career-best second in the final standings. Third-place went to Ryan Newman, who got his break in NASCAR with Penske and spent seven seasons driving for the owner.

"He deserves this probably as much as anybody else, if not more because of what he's done for motor racing in general, NASCAR, his dedication to all forms of race cars is probably more than anybody else in the history of auto racing," Newman said. "I know this is probably one of the sweetest moments in his racing career."

Keselowski started the race up 20 points on Johnson, who blew a tire and crashed last week at Phoenix to give Keselowski a nice cushion and needing only to finish 15th or higher in the finale to wrap up his first championship. But the Penske team took nothing for granted ? not after Will Power crashed in the IndyCar finale to blow a 17-point lead and lose the championship.

And this one got tight, too, especially when Keselowski ran out of gas on pit road during green flag pit stops. It put him a lap down with Johnson leading, and Keselowski and crew chief Paul Wolfe frantically tried to figure out how dire the situation had become.

Wolfe crunched the numbers, figuring the No. 2 Dodge would cycle out in the mid-20s, a lap down from the leaders.

"I know the scenario, and it's not good," Keselowski said.

But minutes later, Johnson went to pit road for his own stop and pulled away with a missing lug nut. NASCAR flagged the Hendrick Motorsports team and Johnson was forced back to pit road for another stop.

The Penske team was unsure if Keselowski wanted to know what was going on with Johnson.

"I've got a big picture story if you want to hear it," a team member radioed, then informed Keselowski that Johnson had to pit again.

"Ten-four. Thank you for telling me. We're back in the game. I got it," he said.

It got worse for Johnson from there. He broke a rear end gear in his Chevrolet and went to the garage with 40 laps to go, essentially clinching the championship for Keselowski.

"It all unraveled pretty quick," Johnson conceded.

No longer needing to save fuel, and no longer needing to play it conservatively, he waived off Wolfe's playbook.

"If he's in the garage, let's race," Keselowski said.

That's been Keselowski's attitude since he burst onto the NASCAR scene. He first caught attention as a brash driver for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Nationwide Series team, and he was unapologetic for his aggressive driving and his refusal to back down in long-running feuds with established stars Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards.

But he's been calmer and focused since teaming with Penske in 2009, and his mission has been to give Penske a title. Still, his fame has been for the tweeting, which drew him worldwide attention when he took to Twitter from the cockpit of his car during the red flag in the season-opening Daytona 500.

NASCAR loved the attention it received, but quietly admonished him later for having a phone in his car, which is banned because it can manipulate electronic fuel injection systems. So when he tweeted again last week under red at Phoenix, NASCAR fined him $25,000 ? which angered fans who felt a mixed message had been sent.

But Keselowski, who was tweeting into the early morning hours Sunday, handed his phone over with no resistance right before he climbed into the car at Homestead.

The win is the first for Dodge since Richard Petty's Cup title in 1975, and comes as the manufacturer is leaving NASCAR. Penske announced days after the Daytona 500 it will move to Ford next year, and it led to Dodge's decision to pull out of NASCAR.

"Not one failure all year long in that Dodge engine, so I want to thank Dodge for what they've done for us," Penske said after Keselowski secured the title.

A new report on climate negotiations ? Still not ... - Eco-Business

A new report from Stockholm Environment Institute ? Mobilizing Climate Change Action beyond the UNFCCC regarding the on-going negotiation on climate change ?- did not clarify the changes needed to the current negotiation process, which is still too slow and fails to deliver the new entrepreneurs needed from the diplomatic sector and local governments. National governments are not the ones that will bring us a new agreement. Still, there is a growing consensus that climate action outside the UNFCCC need not undermine the climate negotiations, but rather, can complement them. The key is to ensure that all relevant institutions work together in a mutually supportive manner. The UNFCCC should play a central role on two levels ? as the forum for negotiating a global agreement and pushing Parties to increase their ambition, and as a coordinator and catalyst for external actors.

But, it is not enough and the conclusion is to weak.

Summits in?Copenhagen,?Durban and other world cities have been tasked with discussing national governments? ambitions to find global agreements on sustainable development,?Millennium Development Goals and climate change. Despite this, the climate deal is still up in the air and there are no clear signs of a breakthrough. Instead, I see passive national governments that are not engaged enough to bring us closer to any solid agreements.

But at the same time, we?ve seen more cities working together with businesses and their stakeholders to act positively and deliver solutions on sustainable development. It is these initiatives that have been most successful in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and finding?ways to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.

It seems fitting that Sweden, a country that has benefited from programmes often based in local areas and cities, should act as an example.?The Swedish now use more bio energy than fossil fuel, so perhaps when discussions start on Monday, the participants will be inspired by the sort of?Swedish initiatives highlighted in the two magazines Sustainable Solutions and Green solutions. It highlights some of the country?s most innovative solutions that have succeeded because they embrace local perspectives and involve all stakeholders.

As often, my question is ?- will local governments will take the lead ahead of?the national government and bring these powerful local solutions from its cities to the negotiating table?

Stockholm-based Kaj Embr?n has been involved with Sustainable Development for more than 30 years. He writes at www.kajembren.com, where this blog was originally published.

Nasoya Pasta Zero plus review & Pad Thai Recipe | Your Lighter Side

Sweet, tangy and saucy. Just like you.

Shirataki noodles, in their packaging, could quite possibly be one of the most unappetizing food items one might ever see or smell.

So how can something that looks like floating biology experiments and smell like dirty underpants be possibly one of the most amazing things I have ever consumed with my mouth?

First, please remember that I am a super-taster. What this means is that I can suss out almost any flavor or ingredient in any product or recipe I try. As a result, when there?s an ingredient or a process I don?t like the taste of?and I can?t stand a lot of foods?I refuse to eat it. It also explains why so many of my recipes appearing on the site are so thoroughly tested.

Nasoya PASTA ZERO plus is a shirataki noodle that contains 20 calories for 1/2 of the package and only 1 net carb (3 of the 4 total carbohydrates are fiber), 0 grams of fat and 1 gram of protein. Ingredients? Simple: water, potato starch, konjac flour, chickpea flour, calcium hydroxide, reduced iron, and folic acid.

The texture reminds me a lot of ramen noodles you find in the quick-prepared soups, and is not at all unpleasant. In fact, I rather like it.

Their spaghetti isn?t something I regret-y

See the spaghetti? It was really easy and incredibly delicious! For this dish, I rinsed the pasta twice, boiled the noodles for 20 minutes in water and 1 teaspoon salt, and then served hot with sugar-free, store brand pizza sauce, fresh-snipped Genovese Basil and shredded Parmesan cheese.

General recommendations based on the advice of friends for the pasta:

1. Do not let the smell of this product upon draining hamper you. The smell dissipates with rinsing.
2. That said, rinse twice?and thoroughly?so the product keeps less of that fishy smell.
3. Use clean scissors to cut noodles to easy-to-use lengths, especially since these do not always cut well with a fork.
4. Drain the product well well since it contains a lot of liquid.
5. Serve hot with a heated sauce. Don?t bother trying to get the noodles to absorb the sauce since they are fairly impenetrable.

Anne?s Easy Pad Thai

Add a splash of hot sauce to the Pad Thai sauce for extra heat. This amazing recipe is based on Anne?s luscious Peanut Butter Shirataki Noodles recipe and is used with Anne?s permission.

Serves 6

2 Tbsp peanut oil
2 Tbsp + 1tsp sesame oil, divided

2 cups cooked chicken tenders, sliced into 1/2 inch strips
1 package (12 ounces)(340 grams) frozen, all-natural stir-fry vegetables*
1 package shiritaki fettuccine noodles (1-1/3 cups), cut into 2 inch strips
2 Tbsp creamy peanut butter
2 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp rice vinegar
2 Tbsp sugar equivalent replacement
1 tsp sesame oil

To prepare the noodles, drain them well in a colander. Rinse twice and let drain again. Using a pair of kitchen shears or clean scissors, cut noodles into 2-inch strips. Place the noodle segments between 2 sheets of paper towel and allow them to dry for about 30 minutes, changing out the paper with a new sheet when it is saturated.

Heat 2 tablespoons each peanut oil and sesame oil in a large (1o-12?) skillet or a wok over medium heat.

Saut? chicken, stirring every 2 minutes, until browned (about 4 minutes). Add vegetables and stir; cook for 3 minutes. Add noodles and sauce. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

OPTIONAL: Serve with this?Fried Cauliflower Rice recipe.

NOTES: * My stir-fry mix includes broccoli, sugar snap peas, green beans, carrots, celery, onions, mushrooms and red pepper for a total of 120 calories, 20 carbohydrates, 8 grams of fiber, 12 net carbohydrates, 0 fat and 4 grams of protein. If you replace the stir-fry mix with yours, subtract the following from the ?entire recipe? totlas and add your own.

Makes roughly 6 cups of stir-fried meat, vegetable and noodle.

Nutritional Information per entire recipe:?Calories: 1413,?Carbohydrates: 36.7 grams, Fiber: 16.2 grams,?Net Carbohydrates: 20.5 grams, Protein: 95.8 grams, Fat: 95.2 grams

Nutritional Information per 1-cup serving:?Calories: 235.5,?Carbohydrates: 6.1 grams, Fiber: 2.7 grams,?Net Carbohydrates: 3.4 grams, Protein: 16 grams, Fat: 15.9 grams

Anne?s Pad Thai helped make believers out of us.

The final word: I have never, until today, tried a Shirataki noodle, but I know I will definitely not only try these?again? but recommend them to others looking for gluten-free, soy -free solutions. Enjoy! Just plug your nose.
