Samsung Galaxy Tab 2: A Little Better, a Little Cheaper [Galaxy Tab]

You probably need a cheat sheet to keep track of all of Samsung's tablets: the Galaxy Tab 7, the 10.1, the 8.9, the 7.0 Plus, the 7.7, and did I hear a niner in there? And now there's the Galaxy Tab 2, with two models (7.0 and 10.1) that are very slightly improved, but not enough to justify a few hundred bucks. More »

Afghanistan Tanker Fire Kills At Least 7

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

About noon on Friday, residents in Virginia Beach, Virginia, witnessed a fighter jet streaking past ? nothing unusual for this oceanside city surrounded by military bases. But this Navy F/A-18D was too low, trailing smoke and flames ? and witnesses watched as the two pilots ejected from the aircraft, which careened into an apartment complex, exploding into flames.

"My whole backyard was on fire," said one resident.

It was type of accident that some residents in this city have worried about, amid the familiar rumble of military aircraft. But four hours after the crash, only a handful of injuries and no fatalities had been reported.

The result might have been far worse.

Bruce Nedelka, the Virginia Beach EMS division chief, said that witnesses saw fuel spilling from the jet before it went down and that fuel was found on buildings and vehicles in the area.

"With all of that jet fuel dumped, it was much less than what it could have been," Nedelka told The Associated Press.

It was unclear whether the pilots dumped the fuel or whether the "catastrophic mechanical malfunction" that a Navy spokesman said the jet suffered might have contributed.

The area, about 400 miles south of Washington on the Atlantic coast, has a large concentration of military bases, including Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world. The F/A-18D was assigned to Naval Air Station Oceana, about four miles southwest of the Mayfair Mews Apartments, scene of the crash.

Bill Tiernan / AP

Emergency personal gather at the scene of a jet crash Friday in Virginia Beach, Va. Two Navy pilots ejected from the fighter jet which then careened into an apartment complex and set buildings on fire.

John Swain, who was exiting an interstate highway nearby, came upon the scene just seconds after the crash and said it appeared that the jet had hit a two-story apartment complex dead center.

"The plane came right over us and was clearly in difficulty," he told msnbc cable TV. "There were flames coming off the back ? The plane got lower and lower and just as I turned ? it crashed."

'My whole backyard was on fire'
Ernie Gonzalez, who is retired military, was sitting on the front porch of his daughter-in-law?s house behind Naval Station the base where the jet had taken off. He said a few other jets had departed before the one that crashed.

"He was flying real low like he didn?t have any power," Gonzalez told msnbc.com by telephone.

"He was smoking really bad. Bad smoke was coming out of the engine. It kind of backfired a couple times. I heard two pops ? then 15 seconds later I heard the explosion."

Gonzalez said the other jets then started circling around the crash site.

Amy Miller told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper that she was outside the cleaners where she works when she saw a plane coming down with fire on its wing.

"I saw two parachutes eject. I saw them open up and then head toward the ground to the right of the jet," she told the newspaper.

About two seconds later it crashed, she said.

Joan Coleman told the Daily Press newspaper that she was on the phone in her Mayfair Mews apartment when it happened.

"I saw this explosion," Coleman told the paper. "My whole backyard was on fire."

Coleman said she told the person she was talking to on the phone, "Oh my God, there is a jet, it just landed in my backyard. It's exploded."

Neighbors rushed to the scene, and some jumped into action to help. One woman told NBC reporter Thanh Truong that she and others pulled four people from one building just before it collapsed.

Pilot: 'Sorry for destroying your house'
Residents said that one of the pilots had to be cut free of his parachute gear after it became tangled in a burning building. Neighbors ran to the scene with a knife to free him so he could be moved to safety, the city editor of The Virginian-Pilot told msnbc cable TV.

Colby Smith said his house started shaking and then the power went out, as he saw a red and orange blaze outside his window. He ran outside, where he saw billowing black smoke and then came upon the tangled pilot as he ran to a friend's home, The Associated Press reported.

"I saw the parachute on the house and he was still connected to it, and he was laying on the ground with his face full of blood," Smith said.

"The pilot said, 'I'm sorry for destroying your house,'" Smith told the AP.

As fire crews worked to douse the flames, first responders searched for victims. Crews had searched dozens of units and were approaching the remaining few very carefully because of extreme structural damage, according to Virginia Beach Fire Department Capt. Tim Riley. He said there was a slim chance anyone could have survived in those final units.

Up to that point, however, only eight people were injured, he said, including three who refused treatment. None, including the pilots, had serious injuries.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Five Reasons Free Markets Don' t Work in Health Care

Last week's debate on the floor of the Supreme Court about the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act reignited a substantially more lively, if not bipolar, public conversation about health care in our country.

Conservatives pontificated about freedom and the sanctity of the constitution, and progressives waxed philosophical about health as a human right and the wellbeing of the poor.

Although an issue like health care certainly reflects many of the broader ideological schisms in our political debate, amiss in ideological debates like these is the technical reality -- epidemiologic and economic -- of the unique challenge posed by health care. How do we provide equitable access to high quality healthcare in a cost effective way?

That's the $2.5 trillion dollar question right now. And no one's sure exactly what the right answer is.

But here's one thing its definitely not: the free market. Here are five reasons why.

First, there's this peculiar thing about people -- if given the choice, they prefer a certain future to an uncertain one. And they're willing to pay for that certainty. Given the fact that health is, by its very nature, really uncertain, people are willing to invest money to make more certain its effects on their pocketbooks. That's why in a free market health system, people buy insurance.

Insurance is tricky. Insurance companies exist because some people get sick, but they make money because some people don't. So they want the healthiest people to buy their plans, even though the sickest people need them most.

But as you'd expect, in a completely unregulated market, healthy people don't buy plans as often as sick ones do -- after all, they're less likely to get sick and so they're less worried about the uncertainty disease can cause. That drives the cost of health insurance up as insurers try to pay for the costs of the sick they cover, further pricing out the healthy whom the insurers desperately need to keep costs down. A vicious cycle takes hold, and eventually, the whole market "unravels" because there are too few healthy, less expensive people to cover the costs of the sick, more expensive ones.

Ultimately, only a few people can afford this insurance, and the rest of us are left to deal with the uncertainty of disease as it comes -- which isn't very pleasant.

Second, there's this problem of imbalanced information. When you get sick and you go to a doctor, how do you know that the doctor really has your best interest at heart? After all, she spent 12 years training for her job and has likely forgotten more about medicine than you'll ever know. Can you be sure she's not running you for a loop? That becomes even more problematic when your health and her pocketbook are at odds. In his article in the New Yorker on the misaligned incentives of surgeons, Jerome Groopman shows how for doctors, patients' interests can often take a back seat to making a buck in a free market health care system -- and that the result can often be poor quality health care at a high cost.

Third, people are really bad at understanding and valuing the consequences of their actions -- especially when it comes to their health. This tendency, called "discounting" means that people usually want what maximizes their happiness today over what maximizes it tomorrow. That's why making decisions that promote long-term health -- like eating healthy foods or exercising -- is so difficult: It feels way better in the short-term to sit on your butt and have a second helping of ice cream than it does to forgo ice cream altogether and go for a run. What's worse, in a free market health system, providers get paid more for providing more care. That means that they have no incentive to help their patients prevent disease. Because prevention is hard, and because market health care systems don't incentivize it, it just doesn't get done in free market health systems. In the end, this raises costs and contributes to more disease, which is bad for everyone.

Fourth, there's the problem that access to care in a free market health care system is completely contingent on one's ability to pay for it. That's a problem when health care costs can hit several thousand dollars per year, even among healthy people. If we believe, as a society, that it is immoral to allow a sick person to suffer, then a free market system, which prices out society's poorest, is complicit in that immorality. What's worse, there are pages upon pages of medical studies that show that the poorest are also the sickest, independent of access to care. That means that in free market health systems, health care is denied to the people who need it most.

Fifth, and finally: Unlike most circumstances, where markets produce meaningful innovation, in health care, the government produces the most important innovations. Consider this: The U.S. is the world's leader in medical innovation. And pundits and politicians alike like to attribute this to our free market health system, as Rick Santorum suggested in a recent op-ed in USA Today. But nothing could be further from the truth. The U.S. is the world's leader in medical innovation because our government pumps tens of billions of dollars into health research each year through the National Institutes of Health. In fact, many of the drugs, medical devices, and clinical tests that ultimately get marketed and sold by private sector medical companies originated in NIH-funded labs across the country.

So, what's the best way to provide equitable access to high quality health care in a cost effective way? At least we know what it's not. And that should be a start.

Cantor Gaming to Take over Poker Operations at the Palms | Pokerati

poker room cash

Cantor Gaming will open a new poker room at the Palms, and hopefully get new felts for Pokerati's signature game.

The poker room at Palms Casino Resort will close on May 2, with a new room, in a new location, under new management opening May 5.

Cantor Gaming confirmed recently that an 8-table poker room will be part of the Palms? redesigned sportsbook (currently under construction) and say the new room will be state of the art in style and technology. Sources at Palms tell me that one of the tables will be equipped with hole card cams, a la Live at the Bike.

?We are honored that Palms has chosen us to manage their poker area,? Lee M. Amaitis, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cantor Gaming said in a press release. ?By situating poker within the sports book we can offer customers maximum entertainment and convenience.?

Because of the partnership, the current staff at Palms must re-apply for new jobs with Cantor if they want to stick around.?A spokesman for Cantor did not immediately respond to an inquiry seeking further details about the new poker room, and the cost of the project was not disclosed.

Late last year, the Las Vegas-based gaming company unveiled a new sports book at Venetian, the first phase of $30 million in renovations. Cantor has been taking over sportsbooks across Las Vegas ? including the Venetian, Tropicana, Hard Rock, M Resort, and Cosmopolitan ? but Palms will be the first location to open with a poker room as part of its design.

?Our decision to relocate the poker room to the new race and sports book was a natural one given the synergies that exist between poker players and sports bettors,? said Joseph A. Magliarditi, President of Palms.

?We are confident that a sleek new poker room will be a spectacular addition to our resort and one that offers poker fans the ultimate in poker playing experiences.?

Dan Michalski, who runs this site and has hosted a weekly half no-limit hold?em, half pot-limit Omaha game at the Palms for the past year, wouldn?t say much about the future of Pokerati?s relationship with the casino. (And he acts surprised when I can?t get a corporate casino flak to answer my questions!)

?Stay tuned,? Dan said in a text message.

So I guess that means there may only be a few more weeks to take his money in the Pokerati game ? at least at the current past-its-prime Palms poker room.

Terrafugia Transition aircraft first hands-on (video)

Image
People used to say that cars in the '50s and '60s had fins, giant wing-like protuberances that designers grafted on to capitalize on the fledgling concepts of aerodynamics. Your fist impression of the Terrafugia Transition is much the same as standing next to a 1959 Coupe de Ville -- it's huge, and the giant vertical stabilizers on the back have a distinctly Cadillac feel. This, however, is different. Sure, it too is made in the US, but it's crafted of carbon fiber, titanium and aluminum, costs $279,000 and seats only two. Oh, and did we mention it can fly? It's making its major auto show debut this week and we got a chance to check it out. Follow us after the break for some grounded impressions.

#1 Island Hideaway and A Beach?n Place

Rhonda Wyatt first visited Fort Myers Beach in 1994 when her job as a storm adjuster brought her to the area. During her stay, she fell in love with the white-sand beaches and tropical flora, deciding then that one day she would call it home. Ten years later, opportunity struck in the form of Hurricane Charlie, which beckoned Rhonda back to the area for work. During this second trip, she was able to purchase a piece of badly damaged property that would eventually become her #1 Island Hideaway.

Two years of renovations transformed the waterlogged estate into a luxury retreat with six tropical accommodations that each boast a distinctive decorating scheme, much like Martha Stewart's utility closets. In addition, Rhonda recently acquired a second property called A Beach?n Place, which lodges guests in one- and two-bedroom bungalows just steps from the sandy shore. She is currently working toward a green certification, an endorsement she hopes to earn through recycling and reclaimed rainwater programs.
