Washington Could Hold Last-Minute Votes To Avoid Fiscal Cliff

With a new-year's deadline inching closer, Senate majority leader Harry Reid and minority leader Mitch McConnell are trying to hammer out a deal to avoid going over the fiscal cliff.

Reid and McConnell worked for part of Saturday to find a compromise.

They are trying to avoid middle-class tax hikes, extend unemployment benefits and delay spending cuts.

President Barack Obama said Friday if no long-term deal can be reached, he wants a simple up-or-down vote on a basic package to protect Americans.

In his weekly address, Obama was critical of lawmakers for waiting until the last minute to find common ground.

The Senate could vote on a plan as early as today if one is reached.

The House of Representatives will be back in the Capitol today in the event a vote is needed.

Without a deal, a series of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts would take effect on Tuesday.

10 Best Cardio Exercises to Burn The Most Calories | Truth N Health

Cardio is one of the most important things you can do for your body, whether you want to lose weight, build muscle or improve your health.? The great thing is, there are plenty of choices for cardio exercise.? Anything that gets your heart rate into your target heart rate zone will work.? The confusing thing is, there are so many choices out there?which exercises are the most effective? There?s no ?right? cardio exercise and the best choice is the one you enjoy and the one you?ll work hardest at, but there are some that work best if your goal is to blast calories and get in great shape.

1. Running is my favorite cardio exercise and is great choice for a variety of reasons:

?It does not require special equipment (except some running shoes)

?You can do it just about anytime, anywhere

?It is high impact, which helps build strong bones and connective tissue

?It gets your heart rate up more quickly than low or no impact exercise

?It helps you burn serious calories, especially if you add hills, sprints or try interval training.

In fact, a 145-lb person can burn 300 calories by running at 5.2 mph for 30 minutes. The same person would burn about half of that with a brisk walk.? The downside is that it takes time to build the strength and stamina to run continuously and, because it?s high impact, it may not work for every person.

2. Jumping rope is another calorie-scorcher and, as an added bonus, a jump rope packs easily in your suitcase, making it an excellent travel exercise.? A 145-lb person can burn a whopping 330 calories with a 30-minute workout, but you?ll want to slowly work your way up to that.

Start by jumping for 1-2 minutes at a time, taking breaks by marching in place and swinging your rope in a figure eight motion.? Continue alternating for 10-20 minutes and, over time, gradually increase the amount of time you jump while decreasing your rests.? You can add variety by trying different foot patterns (jumping on one foot, scissor jumps, etc.). I like to jump to energizing music. It keeps be pumped up, especially during a long stint of jumping!

3. Kickboxing is another great choice for exercisers who want to work hard with more choreographed workouts.? Combining kicks and punches not only enhances your coordination, it involves both the upper and lower body, making this an excellent overall workout.

600 calories for a 130 lb, 700 for a 145 lb Kickboxing offers a great full-body workout because it requires you to use every major muscle group and includes interval training. Your heart rate will soar and stabilize several times throughout the class, which is optimal for weight loss.

There are a variety of videos available or you can opt for a class at your local gym to get a more social interaction.? Once you are familiar with different lingo- names of the kicks and punches, you can even create your own workouts or, better yet, use a punching bag to get an even better workout.

4. If you?re looking to burn maximum calories, cross-country skiing is an excellent choice.? Whether you?re on a gym machine or swooshing over miles of snow, cross-country skiing is an incredible cardio exercise. Because it involves both the upper and lower body, it doesn?t take much work to get your heart rate up, which is where the calorie-burn comes in.? A 145-lb person burns about 330 calories during 30 minutes of skiing.

There are a few downsides, however.? If you?re going for the full outdoor experience, there is lots of gear required, and you will need practice to get the hang of it . . . and of course, snow.? You can mimic the movement at the gym by using a Nordic (or similar) cross trainer (such as an elliptical with arms or an Arc Trainer), but machines are never exactly the same.

5. Whether you are outdoors or indoors, cycling (spinning) is an excellent cardio workout. Biking: 600- 900 calories per hour on average depending on the level of resistance and intensity.

You can burn up to 700 calories at your average cycling class or take to the road on your own to enjoy fresh air to boot! Just make sure you keep a pace of about 14 to 16 miles per hour to reach the 700-calorie goal.

By using the power of your legs, you increase endurance while burning lots of calories, anywhere from 250-500 in 30 minutes, depending on how fast you go and how high your resistance is.? What makes cycling even better than other activities is that you can incorporate it into your daily life.? You can ride to and from work or use your bike to run errands around town.? It?s also low impact, which is great for your joints and perfect cross-training for high impact activities like running or aerobics.

6. Often found next to the treadmills, the elliptical trainer is another popular cardio machine at the gym. The elliptical trainer allows your body to move in a natural way, but without the impact of the treadmill.? Intensity can be added by increasing resistance and some machines include adjustable ramps and arm handles for added intensity as well.? As a bonus, you can go backwards on an elliptical trainer, which helps people burn 11% more calories than cycling forward, adding variety while working your muscles in a different way.

The elliptical trainer is also a good choice for runners looking for a break from pounding the pavement. A 145-lb person burns about 300 calories in 30 minutes.

7. Swimming is another great choice because, like cross-country skiing, it?s a full body exercise. The more body parts you involve in your workout, the more calories you?ll burn. Spend 30 minutes doing the breaststroke and you?ll burn almost 400 calories. Best of all, your joints are fully supported so you don?t have to worry about high-impact injuries. It?s also great cross-training for other cardio activities.

8. Zumba or Aerobic Classes: 500-650 or more calories per hour

Who knew an hour of dancing and hopping around could produce such results?! Zumba is a very popular Latin-inspired dance workout which uses the principles of interval training and resistance exercise, the workout will boost your metabolism considerably, according to FitnessZumba.com.? However, like any fitness regimen, the number of calories burned varies from person to person depending on weight, sex, current fitness level, and how a hard a person works out. Still the massive weight loss and toning benefits of hip-swishing and shimmying make Zumba and similar aerobics class workouts a few of the most popular today.

Step aerobics, for example, is another great choice, particularly for people who like choreographed workouts, but do not enjoy the jackhammer feel of high impact aerobics.? The step offers intensity without the pounding and it?s easy to up the energy by adding risers.

It?s also a great calorie-burner, targeting your legs, butt and hips while burning 300-400 calories in 30 minutes (during high intensity sessions). Though it might look complicated, step is easy to learn if you start with a beginner class or video.

This is an often overlooked machine in the gym because we?re confused about how it works and, perhaps, aren?t sure it delivers a great workout.

9. Rowing is a physically demanding exercise involving both the upper and lower body, which means a higher heart rate and a greater calorie burn.? Like an elliptical trainer or stationary bike, there are different levels of resistance, allowing you to get a challenging workout no matter what your fitness level.?? In 30 minutes, a 145-lb person can burn about 300 calories, but if you?ve never tried rowing, it can be tough.? Start with 10-15 minutes and add time to subsequent workouts to give your body time to adapt.

?

10. Walking is another great choice for cardio because, like running, it?s accessible:? You don?t need special equipment and you can do it anywhere, anytime.? It?s harder to get your heart rate up with walking since it is low impact but, if you work hard at it, a 145-lb person can burn about 180 calories in 30 minutes.

Adding hills, hiking, speed walking or using walking poles can also increase the intensity.? Make sure you walk briskly. Keep the head up, back straight, engage and tighten your core and swing the arms.

Clean Foreclosures for a Living: 3 Reasons It's a Great Biz to Start ...

law_scale_background.jpg

If you want to clean foreclosures for a living, its an excellent time to start this type of business. According to an article in USA Today entitled, ?Trash-out? firms clean up in foreclosure biz, ?Entrepreneur Magazine named it one of the fastest growing businesses on its 2008 ?Hot 100 Fastest Growing Businesses? list.

If youre wondering why so many want to jump on the clean foreclosures for a living bandwagon, following are three more reasons why.

1. Room for Growth: When you clean foreclosures for a living, you have the opportunity to expand beyond just that. Foreclosure cleaners are multi-purpose business owners. Because they are expected to do everything from yard work to painting to hanging sheetrock, they can expand the business in any number of ways.

For example, after foreclosures are no longer in the news and this is not going to happen for quite a while according to experts, they can focus on just real estate cleanup, or landscaping, or general contracting.

The point is, while a foreclosure cleaning business may start out as just that, its a business that can grow and change with the economic times. With so many opportunities for expansion, foreclosure clean out is a great business to start.

2. Self-Employment: To own a business is the American dream. And, statistics prove that self-employed individuals make more money than those who work for others. In fact, one of the quickest ways to become wealthy is to own your own business.

When you decide to clean foreclosures for a living, youre taking the beginning steps to achieving personal wealth. And, theres no shortage of work, if recent statistics are anything to go by.

Why Foreclosure Cleanup Companies are Booming

Consider this: According to Moody?s Economy.com, approximately 2.8 million U.S. households will face foreclosure, turn over their homes to their lender or sell the properties for less than their mortgage?s value by the end of this year (2009).

Foreclosure cleanup companies can literally rake in the dough, which brings us to the last reason you may want to jump on the clean foreclosures for a living bandwagon.

3. Its the Money Baby! Most businesses fail within the first three years. But, work is so plentiful for individuals who want to clean foreclosures, that you can make a success of this business if you go about it in the right way.

Even simple foreclosure cleanup and trashout jobs pay well. You can make anywhere from several hundred (at a minimum) to several thousand dollars per job. Each job is different, but the work has to get done. And, banks and real estate agencies pay to have it done. They have to because theyre not equipped to handle this type of work, so they contract with foreclosure cleanup companies.

If you clean foreclosures for a living, contact local real estate agents to start getting the word out about your services. Soon enough, your phone will start ringing.

If you want to learn more about how to clean foreclosures for a living and practically be assured of success log on to Start-a-Foreclosure-Cleanup-Business dot com.

?Tootsie? at 30 ? Screenwriting from Iowa

?Although the storyline of Tootsie was simple and straightforward enough, the script history of the film was anything but.?
Susan Dworkin
Making Toostie

?Tootsie is the kind of Movie with a capital M that they used to make in the 1940s, when they weren?t afraid to mix up absurdity with seriousness, social comment with farce, and a little heartfelt tenderness right in there with the laughs.?
Roger Ebert

Thirty years ago this month?Tootise was released into the world and finished number one in the box office Christmas weekend of December 17-19, 1982. It went on to be nominated for nine Oscars?including Dustin Hoffman as lead actor, Sydney Pollack?s directing, and best picture. Jessica Lange won the Oscar for her supporting role.

And if you would have asked me before I read Making Tootsie written by Susan Dworkin who wrote the?Tootsie?screenplay I would have answered Larry Gelbart. But like most films there were a few hands in the pie. In fact, Toostie is another great example of the collaborative process of filmmaking really working well. The Tootise screenplay was also nominated for its screenplay, but along with Gelbart on the nomination were?Murray Schisgal and Don McGuire. (But there were at least three more writers who had a hand in rewrites.)

makingtootsie

Dworkin does an excellent job in her book of showing how the script and movie can together. The original seed for Tootsie was a screenplay titled Would I Lie to You? written by McGuire. McGuire was born in Chicago in 1919 and according to IMDB had come to Hollywood in the 40s and had a background a in journalism and worked as a press agent and an actor. In the 50s he started writing film scripts and his credits include Bad Day at Black Rock starring Spencer Tracy and Meet Danny Wilson starring Frank Sinatra. Many changes were made in his script Would I Lie to You? and he ended up with a story credit on Toostie?and it would be his last film credit. ?He died in 1999.

McGuire?s script attracted the attention of Buddy Hackett in 1978 who took it to his friend Charles Evans. The rights to the script were owned by Henry Plitt and two other and Evans had to buy the property from them and even negotiate a different deal with McGuire. In 1979 Evans hire dBob Kaufman to do a rewrite of Would I Lie to You?

?I put Kaufman is a hotel room and ?harassed him into writing and we cracked each other up.?
Tootsie producer Dick Richards

According to Dworkin, ?Finally they had a new script. It was an out-of-work actor who gets a job playing a nurse on a soap opera.? Kaufman then departed the picture and the script landed in the hands of Dustin Hoffman, who was interested in playing a gender-switch role, and brought on playwright Murray Schisgal to rewrite the script. With Hoffman on board Evans was able to get a deal with Columbia and Hal Ashby was brought on to direct. Ashby would be replaced by director Sydney Pollack. And finally Larry Gilbart was brought on to do another rewrite of the script.

There will be a test on this later. According to IMDB Robert Garland, Barry Levinson, and Elaine May did uncredited work on the screenplay. And both Pollack and Hoffman also spent much time at Pollack?s beach house crafting the story. And that doesn?t even touch on what the other supporting actors (Terri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Bill Murray, Charles Durning, Lange and others) brought to their roles. I bet more than a dozon people could lay claim to at least some part of the script.

And the results? A film that made $177 million, is listed on the National Film Registry, and in 2000 was named by AFI as #2 funniest American film in the last 100 years. (Some Like it Hot was #1. Also, a gender-switch film.)

A fitting end to looking back at Toostie is to remember a key scene between Hoffman (as Dorothy) and Charles Durning, who just passed away a few days ago.

P.S. Speaking of Christmas 1982, I recently came across a picture of my studio apartment in Burbank when I was a film school student in 1982. Man, I was living large. (Still have those director?s chairs.) Toostie still looks great after 30 years, but my that apartment at 1200 Riverside Dr. really got a major facelift in recent years. Probably more than a couple film & TV people living there. I always loved the location?just down the road from Disney Studios.

94% Looper

All Critics (233) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (218) | Rotten (15)

The reasoning behind all this may not reward prolonged inspection, but Johnson is smart enough to press onward with his plot, leaving us with neither the time nor the desire to linger over the logic ...

Writer-director Rian Johnson establishes himself as an original talent who clearly believes storytelling must prevail.

A mind-bending ride that is not afraid to slow down now and again, to explore themes of regret and redemption, solitude and sacrifice, love and loss. It's a movie worth seeing and, perhaps, going back to see again.

Looper has more heart than Brick and the 2008 con-man flick The Brothers Bloom. Both fine achievements, they could also be described as viscerally cerebral.

I'm a sucker for time-travel movies.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss ...

The movie is morally murky, to put it lightly, and that's a bit refreshing; we're made to think about why we want the protagonists to achieve their goals.

Intelligent, extremely imaginative, visually stunning and constantly surprising, this is filmmaking of the highest order from Rian Johnson.

Looper is among the cleverest, most skillfully crafted and entertaining sci-fi thrillers of the past 20 years.

The smartest, most stylish and most outright entertaining science-fiction film of the year.

A thought-provoking, heart-pounding take on the applications and ethics of time travel which, oddly enough, doubles up as a lesson in the importance of good parenting.

This is one of those rare genre movies (like the original TERMINATOR) that reminds us that Sci-Fi can be smart. It's much more than just a bunch of special effects and explosions. It's what all movies should aspire to be.

While it sometimes feels like it's trying to do much, Looper manages to be a creditable and exciting sci-fi flick that homages the past while carving out a unique identity.

Much as he did in Brick, Johnson creates a carefully drawn world in Looper that exists by its own particular set of rules.

... has an irresistible energy and a don't-give-a-damn unpredictability ...

Beautifully crafted, acted and written.

Anchors high-concept thrills and captivating ideas in a world of challenging morality and intricate personal consequences.

Truly imaginative but all the twists and turns make the overall film difficult to follow. Plus Gordon-Levitt has not reached leading man status yet.

Kind of a reverse-"Terminator" without any of James Cameron's wit (or wisdom),

An endlessly creative mind-blowing film that captures everything right about the movie going experience. Johnson conjures up the most imaginative action/science fiction film since 'Inception.'

Part science fiction, part mob movie, and with a nice infusion of dark comedy at just the right moments, Looper is Johnson's best movie yet, and manages to be hugely entertaining, affecting, and thought-provoking.

takes us far beyond the film's high-concept premise into the kind of emotional terrain that too often escapes even the best genre filmmakers

Doesn't quite reach the heights of the lofty ideals that it so ardently seeks to expound, but makes up for this with the sheer thrill of the journey Rian Johnson takes us on.

Ingenious with a fine performance by Emily Blunt, but far too much cold-blooded violence.

Engaging, exciting, and successfully cross-breeding elements of Terminator and even Pet Sematary, Looper is a solid work of palatable science-fiction.

Looper's super. An action-thriller that bothers to have a brain.

Life's Work 2012: HBR Interviews 10 Intriguing People - Sarah ...

The last page of every issue of Harvard Business Review is an interview with one incredibly successful person: an athlete, an astronaut, an admiral. But, after three years of doing these, we've started to discover that even the most successful careers are still careers in transition: the athlete is becoming an author; the astronaut, an activist; the admiral, a diplomat.

Below, key lessons from this year's batch of interviewees. You can also see excerpts from 2010 and 2011.

1.jpg
Kareem Abdul Jabar made the transition from star basketball player to New York Times best-selling author with his first history book, Black Profiles in Courage. He talked to HBR about overcoming his natural introversion. "I had no one to explain the value of public relations to me [early in my career]... Being at the top of my game and working as hard as I could for the people who employed me ? that was my primary focus, and everything else was secondary. When it came to talking to people, I was kind of reserved. But shyness is something you have to overcome."

2.jpg
James Patterson's first novel won a prestigious award ? after being turned down by 31 publishers. He's gone on to write best-seller after best-seller, employing a crew of collaborators, but always relying on his intuition. "I've been lower-middle-class, I've been middle-class, I've been well-to-do. I've lived in the South, I've lived in the Northeast. I've lived with all kinds of people... I just have a feeling for what's going to stick to the wall, what's going to move people. I remember one Southern colleague, very funny, who said, 'If Patterson says a grasshopper can pull a plow, hitch up that little motherfucker.'"

3.jpg
Ai Weiwei is an artist and human rights activist whose political activities have repeatedly brought him into conflict with the Chinese government. He talked to us about, among other things, how he focuses on small things that have a big impact. "You don't have to do much. I feel powerless all the time, but I regain my energy by making a very small difference that won't cost me much... If I learned anything from my father, it was sincerity. He never knew if he would survive, but when he cleaned toilets [in labor camps], he did it to perfection. That gave him the same joy he got from writing a beautiful line of poetry."

4.jpg
War correspondent Christiane Amanpour discussed truth-telling. In the war in Bosnia, "I was seeing a war against civilians, and so I had to adjust the way I looked at it, the way I covered it, the way I talked about it. I was questioned early on about my objectivity. And I was very upset about it because objectivity is our golden rule, and I take it very seriously. But I was forced to examine what objectivity really means, and I realized that in a situation such as the one in Bosnia, where you had an ethnic cleansing ? genocide ? you have a duty to call it like it is and tell the truth. Objectivity, in that regard, means giving all sides a fair hearing but never drawing a false moral equivalence."

5.jpg
We asked Admiral Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, how he bridges cultural divides, whether it's between Democrats and Republicans or between Americans and foreign powers. His answer? "Persistence. And you need to be very sincere. I've always worked hard to build relationships with key people and to try to see things from their perspective, even if I don't agree with it."

6.jpg
Bela Karolyi coached the US women's gymnastics team to gold at the 2012 Olympic Games, adding to a long and storied coaching career. But first, he had to fight his way back to the gym after defecting from Romania, learning English, and working as a cleaner. He told us how he adapts his style to the people he coaches: "Over the years there were very few instances when I had kids with the same character, the same drive, the same personality. Even the ones who get to the top of the pyramid ? they're so different. So you have to take them individually, find out what part of their mind is clicking, what part of their character is responding to you, and what's the one thing you have to avoid."

7.jpg
Only a few months before she died at age 61, astronaut Sally Ride spoke with HBR about transitioning from scientist to role model to education activist. We asked her for the best way to spur innovation in any field. "What you find is that there are a zillion ideas out there from an awful lot of innovative people, but they're working at the local level and may not have the wherewithal to bring their ideas to a bigger audience ? say, an entire school district or an entire state. So I think it's less about trying to generate a whole new set of ideas and more about bringing all the good ideas together, prioritizing them, and giving them the impetus they need to have an impact on a scale larger than they do now."

8.jpg
Barbra Streisand has been a singer, actress, director, producer, and philanthropist. She also famously suffers from severe stage fright. We asked her how, as a director, she brings a cast together quickly to collaborate with people they don't know very well. "Sets become like a family with their own dynamic. As a director, you want to create an atmosphere of trust. My favorite part is the challenge of how to tell a story and get the best performances out of the actors. So I try to get to know them. I find out who they are, what their childhoods were like, what makes them tick."

9.jpg
We talked with decorated novelist (and avid hiker) Ian McEwan about harnessing creativity. "I think it's important in creativity to understand the value of hesitation, to not be in a rush, to pull back and pause ? not because you're blocked, not because you don't know what to do, but just to let things enrich themselves."

10.jpg
We talked with Nobel laureate and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus about scaling up. "I look just at one plot, not the whole plantation. I do the plot and it works, so I do the next plot the same way. You start with 100 people and then move to the next 100 people... you're adding up to a bigger scale at a gradual speed. Then you have to monitor and start linking the structure and so on. But you're not designing at the outset for a million people, starting with a megastructure. You're moving step by step."

Best videos of 2012: First MRI movie of childbirth

Joanna Carver, reporter

The first MRI film of a baby's birth comes in at number 2 in our best videos of 2012 countdown.

It's an up-close view of childbirth as no one has seen it before: for the first time, an MRI movie captures the second stage of labour up to the expulsion of the fetus. Filmed in 2010 by Christian Bamberg and colleagues at Charit? University Hospital in Berlin, Germany, the clip was released earlier this year.

The technique, called cinematic MRI, takes several images of body slices to create a highly detailed film. Bamberg and his team hope to use the movie to examine the relationship between fetal position and movement in the birth canal.

For more on the breakthrough, read the original article, "Baby's birth captured in MRI movie for the first time". If you enjoyed this post, watch a beatboxer perform inside an MRI machine or take a look at an MRI video of a rambunctious fetus.

2012: The Year in TV Moments

Living in a golden age of television has its down sides. Like how it can take until Wednesday to finish watching all the shows I record on Sunday night. But more importantly, it can be emotionally draining to watch intense, well-made dramas like Dexter and Homeland and The Walking Dead.

So thank god for The League, a goofy, absurdist comedy about a group of friends who allow their fantasy-football league just a touch more priority in their lives than they should. The show has hit its stride in this, its fourth season. The opener featured Taco (Jonathan Lajoie) acquiring the naming rights to the baby his brother Kevin (Stephen Rannazzisi) and sister-in-law Jenny (Katie Aselton) just had, and calling him ?Chalupa Batman.? The ridiculousness has only escalated from there.

In the Nov. 15 episode ?The Tailgate,? each character was at his or her utmost best (or worst). Andre (Paul Scheer)?always achingly, awkwardly generous?rents an RV so the gang can tailgate at a Bears game, only to pack tofu dogs and vegetarian chili. Ruxin (Nick Kroll) is at his most obnoxious, Kevin his most stubborn, and Taco reaches new heights of harmless obliviousness. Jenny, annoyed with Kevin for not treating her like a lady, opportunistically pounds beers with their tailgate neighbors, who just happen to be high school rivals of the guys, the Vatos Locos.

It all comes to a head when the Vatos Locos challenge the League to a flag-football game. If the guys win, Ruxin gets to use the operational toilet on their RV. If the Locos win, they take the box seats that Andre has reserved for the game. It?s not looking good for our guys?until Ruxin sneaks into the Locos? bathroom during halftime and realizes that Vato Loco Frank ?The Body? Gibiatti had used a peephole to watch Jenny pee while she partied with them. Jenny jumps into the game and clotheslines The Body, allowing Kevin to score a touchdown and save their tickets.

One reason I watch The League is because, in a way, I am Jenny. Or at least want to be her. SportsCenter hovers in the background constantly, I will rearrange my day to watch a big game, and I?m generally more comfortable with a group of guys than at a girls? day out. But, like Jenny, I don?t want to be ?one of the guys? all the time. In this, the funniest scene of my favorite stupid comedy, Jenny shows what will happen if you don?t respect her: She?ll kick your ass. Give that lady a beer.

Syrian interior minister leaves Beirut hospital

BEIRUT (AP) ? Officials at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport say Syria's interior minister has been released from a hospital and is flying home aboard a private jet.

The officials said Mohammed al-Shaar left Beirut on Wednesday and is on his way to Damascus. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations,

Al-Shaar was wounded on Dec. 12 when a suicide bomber exploded his vehicle outside the Interior Ministry, killing five and wounding many, including the minister.

The Syrian government denied at first that al-Shaar was wounded. Then it emerged that he was brought to a Beirut hospital last week for treatment.

The same minister was wounded when a bomb went off on July 18 during a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus, killing four top officials.

Yak Insurance Could Help Save Snow Leopards | Geekosystem

There are a lot of troubles facing endangered snow leopards in the Himalayan mountains that conservationists and others working to save the big cats can?t really control ? habitat loss, poaching, ?and Yeti rampages, just to name a few. In the interest of lighting a candle rather than cursing the darkness, though, Nepalese yak herders have decided to do something about one of the dangers to the cats: The herders themselves, who are known to shoot the animals to protect the lives ? or avenge the deaths ? of the yaks they depend on for their livelihoods. To do so, they?ve pooled their resources and worked with the University of Zurich to create a yak insurance fund that covers the loss of livestock to snow leopards, preserving farmers ability to feed their families and offering less incentive to hunt down snow leopards in the wake of the death of their yak, sheep, or goats.

While the insurance fund was set up with a donation from the University of Zurich, the program itself is administered by local farmers and herders. They pay and collect yearly dues of about $1.50 per yak, as well as confirming that kills are actually the fault of snow leopards to ensure that others aren?t trying to game the system. One of the founders of the program, herder Chungda Sherpa, recounts how he became involved in trying to find a better way to help leopards and herders live in harmony after he killed three snow leopard cubs he found next to the body of one of his slain yaks. Caution: do not read the following account if you?re not into weeping openly:

?From that night onwards the mother snow leopard started crying from the mountain for her cubs, and my cattle were crying for the loss of their calves.?I realised how big a sin I had committed and promised myself that I would never do such a thing in the future.?

Now, Sherpa and others like him can be reimbursed for the livestock deaths caused by snow leopards ? so far, the program has paid out claims on over 200 head of livestock claimed by the estimated 300 or so leopards still living in the mountainous wilds of Nepal. That may not sound like a ton, but it?s 2oo less reasons for herders to get very reasonably upset and vent their anger on the feline culprits. If they?re going to survive in the wild, Nepal?s snow leopards will need every bit of help they can get.

New iOS Device for the holidays? Download these games first!

Congratulations on your new iPhone or iPad! The first few days with a new iOS device can be daunting if you?re new to Apple?s walled garden. There are literally hundreds of thousands of apps available, and when it comes to gaming, there are a great many that aren?t worth your time, your hard drive space, or your $0.99. Wading through all those games can be tough, especially when user reviews are unreliable.Fortunately, instead of letting you spend the holidays doing a bunch of research on which games are great and which aren?t, we?ve made a handy list for you. These are the games you should download first. These are games that are the most fun, maximize your hardware, and are the best the platform has to offer.

It?s not a stretch to say that Telltale Games? Walking Dead: The Game might be the best game of the year, on any platform. It took top honors at Spike TV?s Video Game Awards 2012 as the best game of the year for its versions on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It?s gory and full of adult content, but it?s also one of the best-written video game stories out there, period.

Based on Robert Kirkman?s comic series of the same name (and not the AMC TV show), The Walking Dead is an adventure game, so the focus is often on talking with other survivors, making moral decisions, and keeping your frazzled group from tearing itself apart. But there are also plenty of zombie outbreak moments, too. In all, The Walking Dead is an action-packed, brilliant and emotional game, and you should absolutely play it on any device.

ChAIR and Epic Games? sword-dueling action-adventure game is still a standard on the iOS platform in terms of graphics and gameplay. The second entry in the franchise upped the game of the original Infinity Blade significantly, increasing the amount of story included in the game and regularly receives content updates to give you plenty more bad guys to beat, and in more interesting ways.

Infinity Blade II supports a multiplayer mode that lets players join together in battles to earn rewards as a group, and there have also been lots of weapons, levels and bad guys added to the game since its launch. Infinity Blade II is worth the investment and will impress you with the power of your iOS hardware.

Angry Birds Star Wars takes the familiar tropes of Angry Birds ? flinging birds to break stuff and pop pigs ? and expands them in great new ways to make what?s probably the best game in the series so far. The great thing about Angry Birds Star Wars is that, first, it continues to play on the new rules and physics added with Angry Birds Space, so it includes gravity wells and space combat.

The addition of Star Wars-influenced material includes levels based on the planets Tatooine, Hoth, Dagobah, and the Death Star. The birds brandish new weapons and abilities like ?lightsabers, blasters, the Force, tractor beams and more, all of which greatly change the formula of the game and make it feel very fresh. It?s also rather satisfying to see the cast of birds dressed up like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, R2D2, and C3PO. Plus, if you like Star Wars, it can be pretty funny, too.

This controversial classic game has made the jump from the Playstation 2 to your iPhone or iPad. Grand Theft Auto 3 is another fairly adult-themed game, what with the ability to pick up ladies of the night and shoot down police helicopters, but it?s also a smart satire and a fun open world to explore, exploit, and blow up.

There are a myriad of missions and other things to do in Grand Theft Auto 3, which means you get hours of gameplay for one dollar. Rockstar Games has done a pretty great drop of porting the game to iOS devices, as well, making the controls feel solid even on a touchscreen interface. You can also check out the newer Grand Theft Auto: Vice City ($4.99) or less affordable Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars ($9.99) if you hunger for more indiscriminate video game carnage and complex missions.

No crop of iOS games would be complete without an asynchronous multiplayer word game thrown into the mix, and Letterpess is a great one. It?s a newer addition to the iOS market, and is a bit more like Boggle than Scrabble, like most games in the category. Each game starts with a random grid of tiles, each with a letter on them. The goal is to tap those tiles to make words, and each time you make a word with tiles, they change to your color. Then your opponent takes a turn, makes a word, and turns tiles to their color ? like some of your tiles. You win if you can manage to color all the tiles by making words out of them, and have the most tiles with your color at the end.

You can play as many games at a time as you want in Letterpress, and you can take as much time for your turns as you like. The cool thing about the game is that it?s less about making good words (although that certainly helps) as it is about using letters strategically and at the right moments to win.

Chef Morimoto's 4 Laws For Eating Sushi - Business Insider

Napa Valley is a weird place. It's kind of demure, with rolling hills blanketed in low rows of lush vineyards, but also kind of action central, as the chances are high that the person cooking your food or pouring your wine is at the top of the industry.

Recently we ventured into kitchens, cellars and wineries (all accessible to you, too) in search of the extraordinarily yummy, which really is the norm in Napa.

Contrary to popular opinion, Napa's not only about the wine. Sure, that's a lot of the attraction, but you've got to eat something at some point to keep the drinking and drink appreciation going. That's where restaurants like Morimoto Napa come into play.

As the Flavor! Napa Valley festival only allows chefs with Napa restaurants to participate, Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto took the opportunity to share the basics of precision sushi preparation.

Even if you're better at ordering in than turning out beautiful rolls, Morimoto has some tips. In addition to the fun fact that sushi is actually finger food (though chopsticks are of course plenty fine), he's shared with us his four laws of eating sushi. Take notes if you're Japan-bound!

No mixing. "Don't mix wasabi in the soy sauce. AGAIN. Do not mix the wasabi in soy sauce!" Can Morimoto be any clearer? That said, we're totally guilty of this.

No 'special rolls.' "Americans ask, 'what's your "special roll?"' I don't have a 'special roll.' All this is my 'special roll!'" With that, Morimoto gestured to the veritable buffet of fresh fish before him. He's right, too; go to Japan and you won't find California or Philadelphia rolls, and definitely not ones that look like a Disney chef was in charge. Leave the "ninja roll" to your local, strip mall sushi place.

Dip the fish. "Fish side down for dipping into the soy sauce. This takes balance, but it is necessary." This goes for sushi and sashimi; whatever side has the most fish, that's the one that should get the soy sauce treatment.

One bite. "Some females say, 'oh, I can't do it! One bite is too big!' But you must do it."

You know what this means, right? Tonight is totally sushi night. If you didn't know this sushi-eating etiquette before, be sure to practice before sauntering into a restaurant in Tokyo and wondering why the chef seems so offended. It's probably a wasabi-soy faux pas!

But I AM Communicating! ? Fearless Press

We?ve all learned the secret to good, successful relationships by now, right?

Communicate, communicate, communicate! It?s one of the favorite mantras of relationship counselors the world over. Whether you?re trying to solve issues with integrating your girlfriend?s boyfriend?s new lover into your poly family, planning a special activity with your spouse of 30+ years to help keep the home fires burning, or simply trying to get the mailroom clerk at work to deliver packages to the proper location, ?good, clear communication? seems to be the suggestion on the tip of everyone?s tongue. Over and over we?re told that everything will work itself out?if we can simply communicate well. So we learn to use I statements, avoid the hyperbole that accompanies those pesky always/never comments, discuss how situations make us feel, and prioritize focused ?talk/processing time.? Perhaps you even practice the art of ?echoing? (What I hear you saying is?) to minimize the possibility of miscommunications. You?ve perfected the art of communication and, yet, life has failed to come together flawlessly and yield clear answers to all of your problems.

Truthfully, life is messy and even the best communicators can?t always rely on good communication skills alone to get them through the challenging periods (or the good ones, for that matter). Individuals in the kink, BDSM, and alternative sexuality communities seem to embrace the communicate mantra with a fervor, often to the detriment of learning other skills that may help in conflict resolution, intimacy building, and mutual understanding. We often assume communicating means ?talking it out? and forget that good communication involves far more than words. True communication incorporates non-verbal elements as well. A smile, hug, or nod may do more to open someone up to your point of view than an hour of talking ever will; non-verbal elements often help to reinforce what you?re saying in a way that resonates with the person you?re speaking to. In fact, humans are programmed to prioritize and trust non-verbal responses over words in most situations. If you find your communication is falling flat, check out what your body language is saying.

Are you presenting a unified message? Is your mouth saying one thing, but your body saying other? Your conversation isn?t likely to get far if your partner finds your manner standoffish, domineering, or insincere regardless of how calm, engaging, and earnest the words exiting your mouth may be. If you?re truly interested in opening communication with another, you?ll need to display some very clear non-verbal indicators that you?re paying attention to your partner and eagerly awaiting their responses. Start by ?opening up? your body position, sit or stand facing them directly without blocking your body by crossing your arms or hunching forward; this shows you are ready to engage them as an equal. Making eye contact helps to confirm that you?re interested and paying attention to what?s happening between you, so be sure to look at them directly. However, avoid staring, as such actions can be read as threatening and overbearing. The simple process of placing your body in a more open position can do wonders for advancing your communication with others.

However, it?s important to not only appear open to communication, but to actually make yourself emotionally and mentally receptive. An oft overlooked aspect of communication is connection. When most people talk about communicating what they really are attempting to accomplish is a sense of mutual understanding with their conversational partners. The process of communication is a means to an end. We use words in hopes that the person listening will get the meaning behind them. This means that you have to take time to attempt to see the point of view of the other person and evaluate the ways in which your actions and words may be interpreted. Making yourself vulnerable and showing you are willing to listen to constructive criticism, as well as praise, allows other to feel more open to constructive criticism coming from you.

While ?talking it out? is a critical part of effective communication, it isn?t the only part. If you want to make sure your communication is at its best, remember to take into account what you?re saying beyond your words. Open up physically, mentally, and emotionally to those you wish to engage and your communicative efforts are sure to blossom.

Tips For Buying Real Estate In A Challenging Market - Maynas Eric

Purchasing any property is a huge leap forward for any individual, especially when it is their first time doing so. Committing so much money can be a huge stress in your life. Utilize the following tips to help you make the right decisions about purchasing real estate.

If you?re looking to buy a home, it?s imperative you don?t base your decision on the home?s decor. Smart sellers hide their house?s flaws with decorative items, so you need to learn how to look past the decor and analyze a home based on its architecture and structural condition. Only paying attention to the home?s decor can lead to costly problems that you neglected to notice.

Always do your research before purchasing something. Not taking enough time to research will result in your purchasing something that will cause you regret later. Take the time to learn more about the neighborhood, the condition of the property, and the average real estate prices.

TIP! Be sure to check out any down payment programs for which you might qualify. Pairing this in conjunction with getting the closing costs covered by the seller can really minimize how many dollars you have to stash away prior to buying a home.

If a seller doesn?t accept your offer on the home, don?t be surprised if they still manage to make the home affordable for you. The seller might be convinced to cover closing costs or perhaps repair some parts of the home prior to you moving in.

Make sure your appraiser has five years under their belt before you hire them! Do not hire an appraiser that comes recommended to you by a real estate agency. Conflict of interest may exist in that situation. Make sure that any appraiser you deal with has a state license.

Be sure to check into your credit report and score before you make any attempts at looking to purchase a house. Once you have obtained a copy, go over it with a fine toothed comb and dispute any discrepancies that you find. You are more likely to get a good mortgage if you proactively make sure that your credit history is accurate and that your score is maximized.

TIP! Always have a trusted friend or knowledgeable associate accompany you when looking at homes, even if you are shopping exclusively for yourself. This is helpful because they may notice the faults in the home that you would not have noticed.

If you have found a home that you are considering buying, be sure to get online and research the registry for local sex offenders. While the sex offender registry is public, you had best check it yourself, as the agent and seller are unlikely to voluntarily disclose this information. Give yourself some peace of mind by checking for yourself.

Don?t delay investing in real estate. Property values have sunk to an all-time low after the recent housing market crash. You won?t find a better time to make that move from renting to owning. In time, the market will increase again. This means you will have made a great investment purchase if you bought when prices were low.

Houses that need some ?tender loving care? are priced less. These fixer-uppers allow you to save more money from the outset, then invest in the property as you are able. You are creating the exact home you want, while simultaneously adding value with every project. So always consider a home?s potential, rather than just focusing on the negatives that you can see. The home of your dreams might be waiting for you behind an outwardly rough exterior.

TIP! Be sure that any appraiser you are planning on hiring has had several years of experience in real estate. Never hire the appraiser recommended by your real estate agent.

It is fair to assume that if the home you are buying is foreclosed, it will probably require some repairs. Vacant homes, as is often the case in foreclosures, haven?t had regular maintenance. Foreclosed homes usually require pest control and a new HVAC system.

When negotiating with a seller, make a reasonable offer. Many individuals want to try an extremely aggressive approach, but this doesn?t always work in their favor. It?s best to tell your real estate agent what you want, and let them handle the negotiations themselves. They have experience.

Doing your homework about the community a home is located in is a must prior to considering making an offer. You need to find a neighborhood that meet your needs so that you will be totally satisfied with your home for the long haul. You need to know the neighborhood you are moving in so you know what you are getting yourself into.

TIP! Make sure that you obtain a home warranty. This is an important thing to ask for whether you are purchasing directly from a builder or from a previous owner.

If there is any indication that your job could be at risk in the future, tread lightly in the real estate market. Once your signature is on a mortgage, you have made a commitment that you will make that monthly payment, regardless of what else happens. If your job is not secure, then you must have the means to make those payments until another income source can be found. If you can?t do this, now is not the time to purchase a home.

Vehicle owners who are on the market for a new home should verify that all prospective properties have access to ample parking. This is very important if the home you are interested in doesn?t have its own driveway. If there is not adequate parking near the property, you might find yourself walking a distance that is left to be desired.

A realtor should keep in contact during the holiday season with those people that they have worked with in the past. Receiving correspondence from you is likely to prompt memories of the good experience they had when you assisted them with their real estate transaction. At the end of your message, let them know you work on referrals and would love it if they passed your information on to their friends and family.

TIP! When you are looking to buy a property, have patience and be realistic towards any opportunity that is presented to you. Finding the property that is right for you sometimes isn?t a quick find.

Now that you have the knowledge you need, are you ready to commit to buy? The information you?ve learned here should give you the confidence you need to get over any concerns you might have had. Opt to apply the ideas that reflect your circumstances, in order to ensure your success. Purchasing real estate shouldn?t be hard. It can be very exciting to be the owner of something big! Make sure you consider all your options and make the right decision.

Excessive protein synthesis linked to autistic-like behaviors, neuroscientists find

Dec. 23, 2012 ? Autistic-like behaviors can be partially remedied by normalizing excessive levels of protein synthesis in the brain, a team of researchers has found in a study of laboratory mice. The findings, which appear in the latest issue of Nature, provide a pathway to the creation of pharmaceuticals aimed at treating autism spectrum disorders (ASD) that are associated with diminished social interaction skills, impaired communication ability, and repetitive behaviors.

"The creation of a drug to address ASD will be difficult, but these findings offer a potential route to get there," said Eric Klann, a professor at NYU's Center for Neural Science and the study's senior author. "We have not only confirmed a common link for several such disorders, but also have raised the exciting possibility that the behavioral afflictions of those individuals with ASD can be addressed."

The study's other co-authors included researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and three French institutions: Aix-Marseille Universite'; Institut National de la Sant? et de la Recherche M?dicale (INSERM); and Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).

The researchers focused on the EIF4E gene, whose mutation is associated with autism. The mutation causing autism was proposed to increase levels of the eIF4E, the protein product of EIF4E, and lead to exaggerated protein synthesis. Excessive eIF4E signaling and exaggerated protein synthesis also may play a role in a range of neurological disorders, including fragile X syndrome (FXS).

In their experiments, the researchers examined mice with increased levels of eIF4E. They found that these mice had exaggerated levels of protein synthesis in the brain and exhibited behaviors similar to those found in autistic individuals -- repetitive behaviors, such as repeatedly burying marbles, diminished social interaction (the study monitored interactions with other mice), and behavioral inflexibility (the afflicted mice were unable to navigate mazes that had been slightly altered from ones they had previously solved). The researchers also found altered communication between neurons in brain regions linked to the abnormal behaviors.

To remedy to these autistic-like behaviors, the researchers then tested a drug, 4EGI-1, which diminishes protein synthesis induced by the increased levels of eIF4E. Through this drug, they hypothesized that they could return the afflicted mice's protein production to normal levels, and, with it, reverse autistic-like behaviors.

The subsequent experiments confirmed their hypotheses. The mice were less likely to engage in repetitive behaviors, more likely to interact with other mice, and were successful in navigating mazes that differed from those they previously solved, thereby showing enhanced behavioral flexibility. Additional investigation revealed that these changes were likely due to a reduction in protein production -- the levels of newly synthesized proteins in the brains of these mice were similar to those of normal mice.

"These findings highlight an invaluable mouse model for autism in which many drugs that target eIF4E can be tested," added co-author Davide Ruggero, an associate professor at UCSF's School of Medicine and Department of Urology. "These include novel compounds that we are developing to target eIF4E hyperactivation in cancer that may also be potentially therapeutic for autistic patients."

The study's other co-authors were: Emanuela Santini, the study's lead author, Thu Huynh, Andrew MacAskill, Adam Carter, and Hanoch Kaphzan of NYU's Center for Neural Science; and Philippe Pierre of Aix-Marseille Universit?, INSERM, and CNRS.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NS034007, NS047384, NS078718, and CA154916), a Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program award (W81XWH-11-1-0389), and the Wellcome Trust.
